A well written book written by a well-traveled paddler. 5 out of 5 stars.

I have traveled extensively by canoe in the Yellowstone/Grand Teton area and was happy to finally see a book devoted to the often overlooked waters of this area. The author has particularly good information on Yellowstone Lake, which has a reputation for being a nasty bit of water with very unpredictable weather. Nelson explains the risks and rewards of traveling on these high altitude lakes. This book is a must read for anyone wishing to bring a canoe or kayak to Yellowstone or Grand Teton.

Big Lake Canoeing 4 out of 5 stars.

I was hoping there would be options for river floating. The book is mainly about open water canoeing and some small stretches of rivers that connect two lakes. But it is a National Park, so lots of land/river management is expected to protect the rivers and habitat. Don Nelson does an excellent job with his descriptions, day or extended trip itineraries and maps. However, the crowds and fees would make me think again about choosing Yellowstone as a canoe trip destination (only a personal decision). One more thing, there are grizzlies there if you didn't already know!

Editorial Review:

Details day trips and multi-day excursions on the major lakes of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, plus trips on the Snake River in Grand Teton. Maps and information on access points, mileages, park regulations, campsites, and more.

A mirror for the BWCWA 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Whether you're an old voyager with a canoe paddle as worn as a river rock or someone who's just curious about the Boundary Waters of Minnesota, Gruchow's book will speak to you. The book is well-crafted, and each word must have been hand selected, but the stories still have the feel of a campfire yarn told softly over dying embers. Like the Boundary Waters, and nature itself, this book is at times profound, often educational, frequently beautiful, personally revealing, surprisingly hilarious, and always captivating. The Boundary Waters don't disappint, and neither does Gruchow.

A wonderful book about the advantages of a simple life 4 out of 5 stars.

Boundary Waters: The Grace of the Wild is a true to life essay of being in a great wilderness area. I have recently been in the Boundary Waters. My experiences along with Gruchow's seem to coincide. This book is a must for any traveler to the Boundary Waters. For those that have not, it's a great way to leave the "rat race" of everyday life and discover an enchanting wilderness. Boundary Waters: The Grace of the Wild will help you to stop and discover what your true priorities really are. Gruchow will help you reach your full potential in every thing you do and find your personal meaning of life. Or for just an hour at a time. I recommend this book to whom ever can read! You will enjoy it. I know I did!

Editorial Review:

In this profoundly moving hymn to the wild places of our land, reflected in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota and Ontario, the author of Grass Roots and The Necessity of Empty Places offers an ecstatic contemplation of nature and one's place in it.

A great book for dads of daughters or any outdoor enthusiest 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I was given the book for my 40th birthday and couldn't put it down! It has been my dream to go on an adventure with each of my children when they "come of age" and this book has inspired me to not be afraid to do it. Kesslrings stories bring the lives of the people of the NWT to life. Not only did it tell the story of a somewhat unknown people, but it also reminded me of the important milestones that every parent must take with their children. The book was inspiring to me and a great reminder of the important role we parents play in our kids lives. It's an easy, fun and inspiring read!

Editorial Review:

Rob Kesselring deftly mingles the story of his daughter's "coming of age" canoe trip in the wilderness of the Canadian Northwest Territories with his own life experiences in the region. The result is a story that will have you alternately rolling with laughter, clinging to the edge of your seat, and seeking out your own children to hold in your arms. Rob's down to earth writing style lends itself perfectly to this joyful narrative. By the end of the book you will feel like you've shared in their incredible bonding experience. Enjoy!

Editorial Review:

A lavishly illustrated guide to building a lapstrake canoe--with building plans for three boats.

Lapstrake boats are built by partially overlapping successive thin planks the length of the boat, to make a gorgeous shape that is lightweight, very strong, and stable. David Nichols makes "advanced" boatbuilding accessible to all ages and skill levels. He has written this book so that any high-schooler with a bit of focus can build himself or herself a stunning canoe. Lapstrake Canoes is thoroughly illustrated with color photos and line drawings throughout, taking the reader step-by-step through every part of the process. The photos alone could teach you how to build a canoe. In addition, David Nichols' written instructions are clear and deliberate, breaking down each job into a series of simple tasks, telling where to watch for common errors, imparting skills and good humor at every turn. He also includes free plans for three of his own canoe designs, ranging from 12 feet to 16 feet, plus plans for making your own paddle, and making a downwind sail. This book is an astonishing wealth of information and experience at your fingertips.

An absolute MUST READ for every Illinois canoeist or kayaker 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Paddling Illinois is very well orgnized and thoughtfully laid out. It is reminiscent of the classic Wisconsin paddling guide book, "Whitewater/Quietwater" by Bob and Jody Palzer. I am a map nut and love the maps in this book. They are big, uncluttered, and easy to read. This book is chocked full of useful info. Be sure to check out the "Introduction" and "Appendixes". I found myself flipping through the book, reading the side bars that accompany many of the trip descriptions. They're great. If you paddle in Illinois, or plan to paddle here, buy this book. It's the best paddling guide book available for Illinois, and worth every penny!

Editorial Review:

Illinois's terrain is surprisingly varied. Here, you'll find rolling hills, dense woods, tallgrass prairies, rugged cliffs, and bayous reminiscent of Louisiana. And one of the best ways of experiencing the excitement and diversity of the state's geology, wildlife, and scenery is by paddling its many waterways. This book will appeal to beginner, intermediate, and advanced paddlers who want to take advantage of the state's amazing variety of canoeing and kayaking opportunities. Whether you're searching for an intimate stream or a stretch of challenging whitewater, you'll find Paddling Illinois an invaluable guide.

Don't go to Algonquin without it! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

We bought this book last year at the Algonquin Visiters Centre. After reading it from cover to cover we agreed on a four day canoe route for our family. We just got back from that canoe trip. Wow did we have a great time! Without Kevin's book we were clueless about planning our first family canoe trip. After all, Algonquin is 3,000 square miles of wilderness.

Because the book is so well written and interesting it was easy to read cover to cover. It's more that a list of canoe routes. Each section is full of interesting park history and stories. The information was very accurate and useful.

Editorial Review:

Best canoe builders guide yet! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I have read a LOT of books which attempt to show you how to go about building your own wood-strip canoe and this one is,quite simply, THE BEST. David Hazen writes in a style that is easy to understand and at a level that even the most rank amateur can follow. He leaves nothing out ( He even includes full-sized plans) and if you do have questions he is accessable and very willing to talk or write to you. WARNING: Read this book and you will want to run out to your garage and start building the next day!

Editorial Review:

"The Stripper's Guide to Canoe-building" is unusually crammed with information and inspiration for the first-time boatbuilder. It comes with six full-size template drawings from which it is possible to make at least nine different wood-strip (hence the name "Stripper") and fiberglass canoes and kayaks. The drawings are basic designs for recreational, cargo, and flatwater racing canoes, as well as a two-place kayak that can be made in a recreational, broad-beam version or in a narrow-beam version for the more skilled paddler.

A wood-strip canoe is a ribless boat made from narrow wood strips covered with clear epoxy and fiberglass inside and out. This laminated construction produces a rigid, light weight, sleek, and beautiful boat. A canoe project, the author estimates, would take an amateur 150 man-hours of work. Even mediocre craftsmanship can produce a boat superior to most factory-made boats.

Love to paddle Iowa 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is a fantastic guidebook. Every paddler and every library in Iowa and surrounding states should have a copy.

Nate Hoogeveen knows and loves Iowa rivers. He has found the best places to experience the beauty of Iowa. He has come to know the history of those places and tells the fascinating stories associated with them in ways that enhance one's appreciation of the rivers.

I am very impressed with the love and effort that went into this book. Nate has gotten to know the local experts who know all the secrets of the river, and has travelled every mile with an eye to giving us an accurate and useful description of what we can anticipate finding when we take our own journeys.

One of the most helpful feature of the book is the maps of rivers and roads. Each section has a map with detail that provides exactly what is needed to get on and off the river. I have no idea how the maps were made, I only know that they replace a bookshelf full of atlases and guide books that just don't provide the information that Nate Hoogeveen provides in one amazingly helpful volume.

In short, Nate Hoogeveen has given those of us who paddle on Iowa rivers a whole lifetime of beautiful places to discover for ourselves. Those who have wanted to get down to an Iowa river, from anywhere in the state, will have all the information they need to find a wonderful stretch of river. Paddlers, get a copy now. Librarians, the young people of your town (and the young at heart) will thank you for putting this guidebook on your library shelves.

Iowa is the Beautiful Land, our rivers are the most beautiful places of all. Come discover Iowa's river treasures with Paddling Iowa by Nate Hoogeveen.

Editorial Review:

It should be no surprise that Iowa, the "beautiful land" between North America's two great rivers, offers excellent paddling--from sinuous waterways snaking all across Iowa, with wild and rugged terrain, to spectacularly sculpted cliffs and canyons lining others. Packed full of trip ideas and environmental, geological, and historical points of interest, all canoeists and kayakers will find Paddling Iowa an invaluable guide. The book also includes precise maps showing roads, put-ins and take-outs, significant rapids, mileage, and general summaries covering camping opportunities, water levels, shuttle routes, access points, and canoe rentals.
