Downriver, a review by Allison, Kevin, and Hannah! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

"Downriver!"
Running the rapids of the Grand Canyon, seven kids find adventure, friendship, and themselves. Will Hobbs writes a thrilling survival book called Downriver, which is similar to Hatchet, by Gary Paulson, but with its own twists and turns. This book is similar to Hatchet, but there are seven kids who must work together, instead of one who must work alone. Eight kids are sent to Discovery Unlimited or as they call it "Hoods in the Woods," steal equipment and take a joy ride on the Colorado River. After one bails, it's down to them to overcome their fears and this obstacle. After getting tossed around like luggage in the Colorado River, these kids have to take it up a notch. Not only was the river a problem, but they were doing this illegally with people chasing after them. Will Hobbs uses dialogue and thoughts to bring out the life in the characters, and also uses sensory images.
Will Hobbs is a tremendous author using descriptive language, and strong adjectives to get the reader really into the book. To show this, he has many awards in his trophy case. Some of these are the Notable Book Award, Best Book for Young Adults, Teachers' Choice Awards, and the Regional Book Award. But the only reason he has won this many awards is because his books are a captivating read. The idea for this book came out of Will Hobbs' own experiences. He got this idea because he has gone rafting in the Grand Canyon ten times and wanted to share his love of the Canyon with young readers. We recommend this book to anyone who loves a little excitement, adventure and suspense. Kids from ages 9 to 14 would enjoy this novel. Will Hobbs created a thrilling survival that will lead people to believe that good can come out of bad.

What a treat! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

What a treat this book is for anybody who has ever canoed, wanted to canoe, or just wanted to live vicariously through the adventures of others. You can just tell by reading the book and looking at the pictures that Doc Fletcher loves the whole experience. More than just a guide to rivers, it's a guide to the whole experience, including the towns and taverns, along with a little history. Well-written and fun to read, you couldn't ask for more, except maybe an invitation to join one of Doc's caneoing trips!

Editorial Review:

Twenty rivers in Michigan are featured in detail for the weekend canoeist (novice to veteran). No canoe? No problem. Doc Fletcher gives information on area canoe liveries and writes a play-by-play account of his experience in the river leaving few hazards unmentioned. The rivers selected by Doc are less popular ones but are no less beautiful to canoe or kayak.
Four of the rivers are in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and included is the Two Hearted River of Hemingway fame near Two Heart Michigan. Bonus information about nearby towns and local taverns makes this book fun to read, and the less paddled rivers exciting to explore.

The Classic Work on Bark and Skin Craft 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 12 people found this review helpful.

All modern students of bark and skin boats begin with this book. The intial work on the native watercraft of North America.

While the book does not cover the watercraft of all North American First Nations, it does provide a broad range of information on craft from many Nations across the continent.

This book is highy recommended to anyone interested in the history of canoes or kayaks as developed on the North American continent.

Editorial Review:

The bark canoes of the North American Indians, particularly those of birchbark, were among the most highly developed manually propelled primitive watercraft. Built with Stone Age tools from available materials, their design, size, and appearance were varied to suit the many requirements of their users. Even today, canoes are based on these ancient designs, and this fascinating guide combines historical background with instructions for constructing one. Author Edwin Tappan Adney, born in 1868, devoted his life to studying canoes and was practically the sole scholar in his field. His papers and research have been assembled by a curator at the Smithsonian Institution, and illustrated with black-and-white line drawings, diagrams, and photos.

Editorial Review:

The Rio Grande is simultaneously one of the most watched and least understood rivers in the world. Some stretches of the Rio pass for endless miles through remote wilderness, boxed in by canyons hundreds of feet high and inhabited by only the hardiest animals and humans. Other stretches go straight through the centre of massive urban areas, all but ignored by the thousands of city folks above. It is a national border, a water source, a dangerous rapid with house-sized boulders, a nature refuge, a garbage dump, and a playground, depending on where you are on its 1885-mile course. That's why journalist Keith Bowden decided to become the first person to travel the entire length of the Rio as it forms the border between America and Mexico. This is his fascinating account of the journey by bike, canoe, and raft along one of North America's most overlooked resources. From illegal immigrants and drug runners trying to make it into America to the border patrol working to stop them; from human coyotes - smugglers who help people navigate their way into the United States - to encounters with real coyotes, mountain lions, and other flora and fauna, Bowden reveals a side of America that few of us ever see. The border between the U.S. and Mexico is, in many ways, a country unto itself, where inhabitants share more in common with fellow riverside dwellers than they do with the rest of their countrymen. With this isolated and colourful micro-world as his backdrop, Bowden not only explores his surroundings, but also tests his inner mettle along some of the most dangerous and remote riparian wilderness in North America.

Classic and essential... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Michael Furtman nails it on the head for the anglers new to Northwoods fishing. This is a must have book as it will provide you with the essentials for tackling the majority of fish you will find in the Boundary Waters. It's even small enough to take with you and read on the spot. Easy to read and understand along with many diagrams for further explanation.

A bit advanced for a newbie, but very useful 5 out of 5 stars.

Let me first say that this is one fantastic reference book. It's almost worth the purchase price just for the lake data at the back, which includes among other things the species that inhabit almost every fishable lake in the BWCA and Quetico. The book has some occasionally confusing illustrations of underwater land formations, as well as diagrams of how to fillet the fish you catch. Furtman clearly knows his stuff.

I read through the whole text as a canoe guide who didn't know much about fishing and who had never even cleaned a fish. I still haven't filleted my own catch, but I feel confident I could do it if the situation called for it. As a tenderfoot fisherman, I had to read and re-read the book to absorb all of the valuable details, and I am going to purchase my own copy to bring on trail as a reference this summer. Like I said, the lake data, combined with the best lure types for each species, is worth the purchase price and will improve your results 100%.

Editorial Review:

Updated and revised, this is an indispensable part of any serious fishing trip to the Boundary Waters or Quetico. With more information, this latest version incorporates new fishing techniques, new equipment and an updated index of nearly every lake. Even seasoned anglers will want this book!

Worth every devalued American dollar & more 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I have read & sold other books, but not this one, because it bears reading several times, like having a coach. It reads well in a font size that I (at age 47) found easy to read. Boyne does a good job addressing equipment, rigging, rowing technique, boathandling skills, training and troubleshooting tips.

I refer to this book between sessions on the water. The book does not substitute for time in the sliding seat--in the beginning, I committed errors that threw me into the water or that made release & catch of the oar blades messy. The book, and time spent with an accomplished fellow rower, helped clean up these errors.

Editorial Review:

Here is a fully illustrated beginner's guide to the art and skill of rowing.

Sculling is swiftly becoming a popular recreational activity for adults of all ages interested in fitness and fun. Essential Sculling is an authoritative, concise, and thoroughly readable handbook focused on helping the novice become an accomplished sculler. With time-honored advice and edifying anecdotes, Daniel J. Boyne, director of recreational rowing at Harvard University, offers the finest instruction-for men and women alike-on all aspects of the sport, such as:

* Identifying and buying equipment * Beginner's technique * Drills for blending technique and power * Training for competition * Rigging * And much more

More than a brilliant how-to manual, Essential Sculling is appreciation of sport at its best.

An Interesting Perspective 4 out of 5 stars.
39 of 39 people found this review helpful.

Reading the other reviews submitted about this book, one would think that it is either the best or the worst book ever written about the special requirements of canoe camping in the boundary waters. Well, it is neither. I take a 14-plus day trip to the Quetico every other summer, and have travelled many of the most challenging and remote routes of the park. The value of this book is that it offers one set of ideas as to the best way to go about one's business in the wilderness. These ideas are not definitive, and I flatly ignore many of them. That said, I have also adopted some of the ideas found in the book, or at least reconsidered my tried and true methods based on some of the author's recommendations. If you're looking for a book to stimulate you to think about different ways of doing things in the woods-- this is a good choice. If you're a beginner, this isn't a bad place to start, but it would be a bad place to stop. There are as many different ways to go about travelling in canoe country as there are lakes in the Quetico. Almost all have something to offer. None are perfect. This book is worth reading as part of the exploration and learning process.

Editorial Review:

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA), located in northeastern Minnesota, is a legendary wilderness destination for canoeists from around the world. Longtime guide and canoe authority Cliff Jacobson explains the best and safest ways of planning and enjoying a BWCA journey. Includes maps, illustrations, and information on obtaining permits, packing the right supplies, practicing low-impact camping techniques, honing paddling skills, traveling with children, and dealing with hazards on land and water.
