A Canoeing Instructor's Comments 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

The authors are competent paddlers and good writers. This is a well organized book with an excellent format. It contains helpful hydrographs and good photos. The informations is dependable. If you desire to paddle a Montana river, this is the place to start. I highly recommend it as THE guide book to get for our state.

Great book for Montana's waterways 5 out of 5 stars.

This books gives great detail about the each river, best times to go, where the crowds are(n't), basically everything you would need to know. The author explains that many of Monatana's rivers are in the western end, with a few in the dry eastern side. Many rivers described are also Class I (on the river rating system). Keep in mind that Class I can cover alot of levels, including those that are almost Class II. (for you beginners, just because it's class I it's not as smooth as a lake).

I mainly bought this book for the Flathead River routes, but discovered so many more river. The book also mentions where to get detailed maps for certain river routes, including the Flathead.

If you've got lots of time, you can even explore the route Lewis and Clark took back in the early 1800's.

Editorial Review:

Detailed paddling information on 32 Montana rivers, including such paddling destinations as the Yellowstone, Flathead, Smith, and Missouri. Access points, detailed maps, fishing information, average monthly stream flows, and much more.

A Confused Laundry List 2 out of 5 stars.
25 of 26 people found this review helpful.

Derek Hutchinson has led kayaking expeditions around the world and teaches highly regarded seminars on the sport. However, he seems unable to clearly translate this teaching ability to print. This book reads like a laundry list of things to do in a kayak: equipment choices, paddle strokes, rescue techniques, rolling, surfing maneuvers, etc.; without rhyme or reason as to their purpose or when they should be executed. The book does cover a complete range of topics relevant to the sea kayaker: all topics just mentioned plus weather, tides, navigation, wind, etc. Unfortunately, many sections are out-of-date, such as the equipment section; a lot of information, such as that on nautical charts and on weather, is specific to kayaking in Britain; and some information, such as that on tidal currents, is just plain wrong. I did learn quite a lot from the sections on turning strokes and eskimo rolling, but not as much as I feel I should have and not enough to know where or when to use a particular technique. Overall, I was disappointed with the quality of instruction presented in this book.

Up The Lake With A Paadle 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book is perfect for beginner to intermediate canoers and kayakers in the Sacramento and Sierra Foothills. Although the lakes listed in this book are limited to only a handful though-out this area, the discription of those lakes are excellent. Included is trip length,(time and miles), directions to the lake, access, difficulty, size of area, and recomended maps to use. Also included are detailed hiking, camping, historical background and natural history along with some highlights of the area of each lake or river. Special waterfalls and sites to look for or hike to at some of the lakes and rivers are a treat to read about. My only regret is that more lakes in this area where not included.

    Editorial Review:

Volume 1 of the Up the Lake with a Paddle series is the primary guidebook for paddlers looking for places to paddle within the Sierra Foothills and the Sacramento Region. The regions covered in this book are a paddler's paradise with spectacular lakes and scenic, quiet rivers. For those looking to plan a weekend getaway for two or a fun-filled family paddle this book is a must. The second edition now includes more information on the history, geology, plants, birds and animals of each region. Including GPS waypoints for paddle locations and more "In the Eddy" and "Paddle Notes," all the items the fans of this popular series enjoy.

watch out 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I have paddled extensively in the areas covered by this book and find the route descriptions to be very accurate, but keep in mind this book is 17yrs. old and there are some changes, most noticeably many of the put in points have been closed ,fenced, etc. and no longer exsist. Check locally before a long drive.

An excellent reference for canoeing North Florida 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book is a guide to virtually every good paddling stream or river in the northern half of Florida, from the panhandle to the east coast and down as far as the Ocala National Forest and Orlando area. It leaves off a few rivers along the Northern Atlantic Coast but these are covered in the companion book.

For each river, there is a general description, typically with a B&W photo or two. Then, each covered section of the river is addressed individually, with difficulty ratings, access points, river mileage, and a description of the river section with interesting details or features, such as major shoals or safety hazards. Maps are included covering each section, typically based on the state canoe trail maps.

For readers familiar with the other Menasha Ridge canoe guides, this one will look a little different. There is less technical data such as river gradient, rainfall, etc., because Florida rivers aren't whitewater and don't really need it. However, the descriptions of the river sections are usually much more detailed than other books in the Menasha series.

The book also has a general introduction to paddling in Florida, including discussion of issues visitors to the state might not have thought of. For example, some basic alligator safety points are included, as well tips on insects, sun exposure, and riparian rights.

When my wife and I first started canoeing in Florida, we bought this book. Turns out it was the most essential piece of canoeing equipment we ever bought. We have used it literally hundreds of times in the thousands of miles we have paddled.

The four stars instead of five is the result of the book being somewhat dated. Menasha very recently released a long-awaited update (ISBN 0897325885) which combines this work and the original companion book on Southern Florida paddling. While I haven't seen the new edition, interested parties should consider it also.

    Editorial Review:

The companion volume to A Canoeing and Kayaking Guide to the Streams of Florida, Volume I, North Central Peninsula and Panhandle. Each stream is divided into sections illustrated with maps, photographs, difficulty and scenery ratings, notes on history, flora, and fauna, including thorough descriptions of all access points for each stream section from the central Atlantic Coast to the tip of the peninsula.
