I purchased this book as a guide book for kayaking lakes that I may have not known about. I found the book lacking on listing ALL the possible lakes not just some the author knew. I was looking for a lake guide book that list every lake, pond, maybe river not just a few. I had the older book and that listed even less. This also concentrates on the wildlife and plant life rather than describing the actual lake. This could be a really good guide book if it were done better...........

Editorial Review:

Enjoy days of pleasure exploring the flatwater lakes and ponds of New Hampshire and Vermont. Great for paddlers of all ages and abilities, this updated and expanded guide offers detailed descriptions of more than 90 scenic destinations - including 55 new paddles.

Special features include: detailed descriptions of each lake and pond, with paddling routes, local flora and fauna, and seasonal highlights; driving, parking, and put-in instructions; safety tips; local picnicking and camping spots; equipment choices; advice for padding with children; low-impact travel tips; illustrated sidebars on New England's fascinating waterside wildlife.

The New Bible for Keys Paddling. 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I just received my copy of this high quality guide book. I live in the Keys and have paddled many of these sites but in just glancing through this book I realized how much I have missed. Very complete and a must for visitors and locals alike.

Makes paddling the Florida Keys a perfect experience 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

As a guide and avid paddler I found this book incredibly useful and informative. Anyone that will set out to explore the paradise of the Keys will find their way to many areas that would never be found without this book. Bill and Mary obviously did their homework with the ultimate guide book for all paddlers enjoying the beauty of the Keys. Nice job guys.

Top notch of all the paddle books I've seen 5 out of 5 stars.

I have worked in a few paddle shops, and I've seen many a paddle book. This one by far tops the list. Actual color charts, not hand-drawn diagrams with no reference points and no way to gauge distance on them, are on virtually every page of this book. Excellent information on locales, paddling routes, points of interest, Keys trivia, paddle-friendly lodging and restaurants, instant indexing, simple buoy/compass/gps navigation points, full color photos, and on, and on......This is the most definitive paddling atlas of the Florida Keys I have seen. Well worth the cash--especially if you are new to paddling in the keys--launch points are sometimes hard to find, and navigation gets tricky in some areas. Old Keys salts will also find something new in this book. I am impressed!

Editorial Review:

A detailed color atlas of the Florida Keys from Key Largo to Key West designed for kayakers and other water enthusiasts interested in shallow water exploration.

Lessons are not hard to learn 2 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Deep trouble recounts the stories and reports of 20 kayaking incidents which range from death (often with sketchy information as you would imagine) to mild hypothermia to extraordinary feats of endurance and survival.

Unfortunately I found a majority of the incidents were the result of either total novices `in over their heads' or total stupidity. Kayaking in shorts and a tee shirt in 10degrees water and 20knot winds with no pfd; the lessons are not hard to learn. Also many of the lessons from each incident were the same, how many times should we read to dress for immersion and wear a pfd?

However, of the 20 cases presented, one or two were noteworthy, others included elements of interest, and some of the comments from the `pros' was useful.

The formatting - which includes simultaneous commentary with the incident report - didn't work for me at all (others report here that they like it, go figure).

I expected more from this book (I have always wanted to read 'Total Loss' the equivalent book about sailing) but it just wasn't aimed at me. The target audience must be novice kayakers who don't wear a pfd; if you are in that audience buy this book.

Editorial Review:

This riveting book offers 20 harrowing, real-life tales of sea kayaking accidents that will not only keep readers on the edge of their seats, but also instruct them with potentially life-saving lessons.

Some new thoughts on strip building . 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

A well written and well illustrated book. Bringing some new thinking to the established strip building technique. Anyone who follows the step by step instructions should be able to produce a very pleasing and functional canoe as a result.

Patrick Miller.

Editorial Review:

The strip building method was first introduced in the late '60s and has enjoyed an ever expanding following over the years. Little has changed in the basic method of construction; however, over the years new techniques and numerous refinements have been introduced, many of which you will find here. The one thing that has remained constant is that unquestionably, the popularity of strip built watercraft comes from the natural beauty of the wood they are made from. When coated with clear resin and fiberglass, the rich tones and colors of the cedar strips cry out to be touched and admired. The premise behind this book is that if you take your time, approach the project thoughtfully, and follow the guidance provided here, you will be able to successfully build a beautiful strip canoe without breaking the bank. Anyone with a little determination and patience can build one of these craft.

Editorial Review:

The book is basicly an invitation to join the kayakfishing revolution and become a member of the kayakfishing community who fish anywhere from small ponds to open oceans from their kayaks. Citing the strategic, economical and convenience advantages of fishing by kayak-the most overlooked, effective, efficient, and convenient way to: fish with less hassle, fish more often, catch more fish, have more fun and save money doing it-the book makes a strong case for selling your big boat. Target readers are fishermen who have never fished by kayak before, kayakers who have never fished from their kayak before, and individuals who have never kayaked or fished but think that they might like to give it a try. The book also has plenty of tips and techniques of interest to experienced kayakfishermen as well because it draws on a wealth of information from top kayakfishing experts and pros from all over the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. It also profiles the learning experiences of new incoming kayakfishermen with various angling interests and degrees of experience who are just as enthusiastic about helping newcomers as they are about practicing their sport. Included is advice on how to: choose the right kayak for you, choose the right accessories, and customize a kayak, including the installation of live bait tanks, rodholders, depthfinders and more. The book also teaches kayakfishing skills and techniques such as kayak flyfishing, lure fishing, live bait fishing, including kayak fish stalking, fish fighting, fish handling, including kayakfishing safety. The book also has a special resource chapter that directs the reader to "kayakfishing friendly" paddle and tackle shops in their area. It also lists sellers of specialized kayakfishing accessories, kayak manufacturers, kayakfishing schools, instructors, guides, outfitters and Internet websites where where readers can get free advice and information. Also included are email addresses of experienced kayak anglers who are anxious to help and guide newcomers, and the kayakfishing bulletin board addresses where they hang out and converse on the Internet.

Excellent reference for the whitewater enthusiast. 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Mssrs. Walbridge and Sundmacher cover the subject of whitewater rescue well. It is geared toward the recreational boater, but is also a valuable tool for the public safety officer (police, sheriff, fire/rescue,SAR, ranger, etc.). It does not cover reading whitewater, since assumes the reader is already a boater of some sort. It does present the most common problems and solutions. In addition it covers use of the tools needed to safely execute timely rescues. Easy reading, excellent photographs and drawings illustrate the points well.

Great book 5 out of 5 stars.

Great book that anyone who plans on kayaking, rafting, or anything on the river, should own. There's the important and simple things that every one should know about what to do in possibly dangerous river situations. There is also a good amount of advanced rescue techniques involving many ropes, pulleys, carabiners, and people so if that's what you're looking for this has it.

Editorial Review:

Whitewater Rescue Manual is for all whitewater padlers, beginner to expert. This book presents the best techniques for self-rescue and rescue of companions on the river.

Good for what it is 4 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

This is not traditional kayak building. It is modern, "Popular Mechanics" style kayak building, which means the boat will be fine for what it is, but overbuilt, too heavy, and basically nothing like the sleek racy craft that it could be. The design and construction is suited for the amateur builder who wants as little of a woodworking challenge as possible, which makes it perfect for a project to build with kids. A parent and child could have great fun building a boat such as this. So, keeping that in mind, it's just fine. For real kayak building in the traditional manner see Cunningham's "Building the West Greenland Kayak", or Morris's "Building Skin on Frame Boats".

Editorial Review:

The design of the kayak comes from the Eskimos of Southwestern Greenland, with dimension-sawn wood substituted for a frame of carved driftwood and bones, and canvas substituted for animal skins. The building techniques are simple but elegant, incorporating modern adhesives to reduce the number of screw fastenings and the degree of precision required, while still creating a strong, light boat. Ordinary shop tools and locally available woods will suffice. The two kayaks shown under construction in this book's many photos and drawings--a 17-footer and an 18-footer--were built from the same lines and offsets (included in the book). Putz shows how to scale the boat up or down to any size using a pocket calculator. He also shows how to cover the boat with fiberglass rather than canvas if desired.
