Editorial Review:

"It's well known that Mother River doesn't like a smart aleck," says Patricia McCairen. Accordingly, she plies her oars with reverence and skill on a sometimes hair-raising solo rafting trip along the Colorado River that winds though the stupendous stone valleys of the American Grand Canyon. Like the waters of the Colorado, which change from long, still stretches to boiling white water that barely clothes sharp rocks and hides holes that can suck down a raft, McCairen's moods--and even her name--change as the miles unwind. One moment, she's the cocky, athletic river guide Babe; the next, she's an earthier, more spiritual woman who answers to the name of Patch. Hours later, she seems more vulnerable, less convinced of her strength and joy in the solitude she so zealously courts. Canyon Solitude records these shifts and beautifully limns a journey that tests McCairen's mettle and shows that determination, grit, and the will to spurn conventional rewards offer their own deep satisfactions.

Good, but very specific 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book was interesting to read and very informative. Do be aware that it is very specific for canoeing on Arctic rivers, and is much less applicable to warmer climes.

Invaluable Planning Resource 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Anyone planning a canoe trip of a few days or a few weeks will benefit from studying the advice given in this book. As a person who has spent some time in the wilderness I appreciate Jacobson's careful treatment of the subject: he offers solid, tested techniques and then points out the many ways things could go wrong. He uses stories form his considerable experience to illustrate how important it is to plan carefully, not to compound mistakes and thereby opens up the possibilities of canoeing in some incredibly wonderful places.

There is a section devoted to accounts of expeditions by different authors that serve to inspire and inform planning. A very engaging and thorough book, the premier one on the subject.

Editorial Review:

Expedition Canoeing is the premier guide to canoeing and exploring North America's wilderness rivers. This updated 20th anniversary edition covers route and trip planning, paddling and camping gear, dealing with bears, canoe hazards and rescue, barren-land travel, and much more.

if you're thinking of rafting it's a must! 5 out of 5 stars.
47 of 48 people found this review helpful.

Jeff Bennett has been doing rivers in North and Central America as a guide, whitewater instructor, international racer and professional photographer since the early 1970's. He has co-authored several other books, including Class Five Chronicles. The Complete Whitewater Rafter is the culmination of his river experiences and the progeny of his previous book Rafting!. Although sole author, he envisions The Complete Whitewater Rafter as the culmination of a river-running evolution that has been ongoing for the last half century. He has borrowed tips and techniques from contemporary instructors and classic technique textbooks.

Bennett characterizes this book as a complete course in river running. For those who raft, the book has it all, beginning with a chapter on the Evolution of Rafting: From Powell to Paddle Cats and ending with a chapter that covers becoming a professional guide, whitewater photography, rafting for the physically challenged and rafting with children.

I primarily bought the book to get tips on oar rigging and everything was there, including all existing boat, frame, and oar designs. The chapter on gear maintenance and repairs was first rate and complete (it even included material on maintaining wetsuits, drysuits, lifejackets, and pumps). For those with interests in paddle rafts the cook covers all the strokes and more importantly has an entire chapter on Paddle Captaining: The Art of Whitewater Choreography. Several major rafting companies include this as mandatory reading for guide certification. Finally, the book has several chapters on multiday trips, which review packing and carrying gear, river camping and cooking, and river exploration. This material is applicable to anyone who is contemplating a multiday trip (whether raft supported or not).

If you are not particularly interested in rafting check-out the book for the information in chapters 5, 8, and 10. Chapter 5 - River Morphology: The Dynamics of Running Water looks beneath the surface at river mechanics, laminar flow, turbulent flows, chaos, helical currents, and meanders and relates all this to tongues, upstream Vs, standing waves, diagonal waves, haystacks, breaking waves and stoppers, pillows, undercuts, rooster tails, boils and holes. It's really well written and excellently illustrated. I will probably scan-in some of the illustrations and make slides to use in lectures for paddling classes. Chapter 8 covers running rapids in oar rigs and paddle rafts but the information is equally applicable to hardboats. Again, the illustrations and suggestions on tactical approaches to rapids are excellent. Finally, chapter 10 - Rafting on the Cutting Edge discusses class V rafting including boulders and slots, waterfalls, high water techniques, and even steep creeking. I hadn't even imagined creeking in a raft but it is done. I have a whole garage full of hard boats for every possible use. This book has made be consider getting an R-2 for this year's creek season.

Editorial Review:

This is the manual endorsed by professional guides, instructors, and recreational river runners everywhere. With comprehensive step-by-step coverage starting with the first run, it includes tips from top guides, outfitters, and instructors, plus the most complete guide to Class V rafting techniques ever assembled. This is the completely revised and updated successor to Bennett's best-selling manual, Rafting!.

confidence and knowledge for even the newest paddlers 5 out of 5 stars.
25 of 25 people found this review helpful.

I started paddling just 2 months ago and bought this book before my first venture on the water. After reading it I felt like I had a basic idea of the kinds of things that could happen to me and what I could do about them. It contains advice from many experienced paddlers who want to help you avoid their mistakes and have a great time paddling. Being new to the sport I didn't even know what questions to ask - this book covers topics I hadn't even thought about. It gives advice on the best fabric choices in clothes for the weather, what to pack on the boat, what to have waiting for you at the end of your trip (hot cocoa among other things), how to tie some basic knots, how to scare bears away, how to pee without leaving the kayak (valuable information for women - like me). It's interesting, fun to read and not at all didactic. It includes many tips for more experienced paddlers and I will reread it often as I advance in the sport. The tips are offered by paddlers who obviously love their sport and want to share their great time with everyone else.

Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

This book places a strong emphasis on technical perfection. Which is rarely found in todays rodeo-centric paddling community.

Eric, for the most part, focuses on pure paddling technique and skips any superfluous information.

Using the exercises Eric recommends here will certainly improve your river running.

If whitewater kayaking is your interest, this is the book 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Eric Jackson has put together the most concise and well thought-out book in modern kayak technique to have come out in years. An experienced class V+ kayaker myself, I found improvements I could apply to my every paddlestroke from this book. Even expert boaters will benefit on key points regarding modern school techniques from catching eddies and snapping sprayskirts to finding the optimal pressurization for floatbags. A must read for all serious paddlers.

Editorial Review:

85 color photos, 6 x 9
Expert instruction in beginning and advanced whitewater strokes
Techniques illustrated in on-the-water photographs of a champion paddler

When a kayaker perfects fundamental strokes before attempting to tackle whitewater, he is rewarded with efficiency, simplicity, control, and speed. Expert kayaker Eric Jackson provides detailed lessons on 16 such strokes, each illustrated in step-by-step photos of EJ in action on flat water and in the rapids. Each section includes advice on the early correction of common paddling mistakes, warm-up and practice drills, as well as how each lesson combines with others to improve technique.

Author's review 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The 2nd edition of The Springs of Florida is a great improvement over the first edition with new information, an updated account of Florida's many new springs related state parks and commercial springs like Ginnie Springs, and some new photographs. It has become a field guide to the environment and inhabitants of Florida's rare springs and springs rivers. But the original intent of the book remains the same - to show the beauty of these wondrous places.
Doug Stamm

Editorial Review:

The many springs that jewel the landscape of Florida are translucent openings into a dominion very rare: a crystalline world of fresh water at the edge of the sea. The deepest and largest known springs in the world are found in Florida. This book is a guided tour of these beautiful environments, with an emphasis on the many strange and wonderful natural inhabitants. The photographs are the result of hundreds of hours under water, during both night and day, in springs large and small, and at varying seasons of the year. This new edition is completely updated to serve as a guide to the many spring parks throughout the state. Indispensable for canoeists, kayakers, divers, snorkelers, and those who just want to stand at the edge and admire.

Wow! All in one book. 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

In Shari Aber's guide you discover a personal odyssey combined with extraordinarily complete information on kayaking on the rivers, ponds, and lakes in this region of New YOrk. This book is formatted to allow you to plan your trip from your easy chair. Every area in six counties is mapped for you. Each entry includes route, mileage, difficulty level(from easy to challenging), setting, hazards, remarks and a narrative of the author's kayak journey in the specic spot.
She also includes types of kayaks, necessary supplies, and helpful web sites. The appendices expand your knowledge of local events and tours and include a list of outfitters. Land directions get you right to the easiest spot for your excursion to begin.
Each entry closes with "The Paddle", the author's description
of her voyage on the waters indicated. Her personal tales include local history and her unique observations on the water and natural environs. Ms. Aber's interest in the birds, especially the herons, hawks, and eagles
in each district is evident.
Photographs of the bodies of water and their inhabitants help in the trip planning, for we all know we want to go where we just might see otters and muskrats and the baby deer hiding in the weeds at the water's edge.
This is not just a guide to where and how; it is a call to adventure and the pleasures of becoming part of "the harmony of seemingly disparate forces."

Editorial Review:

Author Shari Aber leads the reader on thirty-three guided paddles in the heart of the Hudson River Valley--Dutchess, Orange, Ulster, Greene, Columbia, Putnam, Westchester, & Sullivan counties--through such magnificent waterways as Tivoli Bays, Constitution Marsh, RamsHorn-Livingston Sanctuary, the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge, the Delaware, Wallkill, Tenmile, Croton, & Neversink rivers, and the Esopus, Wappinger, Otter Kill, Black, Stockport, Catskill, Bashakill, DuBois, Fishkill & Rondout creeks, plus thirty-seven Hudson Valley lakes, ponds and reservoirs. Meet bald eagles, blue heron, swans, and beavers on the "quieter waters" far from the noise, the traffic, and the madding crowds. Includes maps, photographs, tips on safety, and directories of outfitters and environmental organizations offering equipment, instructions, or guided tours.
