Editorial Review:

Loran and GPS notwithstanding, there will always be a place for the sextant aboard any blue-water boat, if for no other reason than the thrill and mystery of finding one's position on earth by gazing at the heavens. Here is the indispensable reference that should accompany the instrument aboard. Cmdr. Bruce Bauer, a professional navigator and master mariner with the U.S. Merchant Marine, has distilled years of hands-on experience into an eminently readable guide to buying, adjusting, using, and repairing sextants.

The Sextant Handbook is dedicated to the premise that electronic navigation devices, while too convenient to disregard, are too vulnerable to rely on exclusively. The book is designed to make beginner and expert alike conversant with this most beautiful and functional of the navigator's tools. Topics include:

  • Assembly and Disassembly
  • Vital Adjustments
  • Avoiding Problems
  • Rough Weather Sightings
  • Oiling and Cleaning
  • Immersion Baths
  • Emergency Silvering
  • Finding and Buying Used Sextants
  • And Much More

You'll also find a list of distributors, manufacturers, and dealers worldwide, a discussion of future trends, and numerous helpful hints, including sighting with eyeglasses and using a Rude starfinder. All in a thoroughly revised edition of a book acclaimed by navigation professionals.

Helped us Charter the BVI's 5 out of 5 stars.

We have chartered a boat the last two years in the British Virign Islands, this book was a great help when it came to visualizing the islands and where to find mooring balls. Others we have traveled with have also purchased the book.

Awesome guide 5 out of 5 stars.

We just got back from our sailing trip to the Virgin Islands, and this book was a huge asset. I can read charts all day long, but it's just not the same as seeing the actual photo of the bay. I strongly recommend this to anyone planning a trip to the Virgin Islands.

Nice guide but needs an update 3 out of 5 stars.

Nice guide but the photographs definitely need an update. The colors and resolution are poor. Being almost 2008, with the cameras, technology, and prints availalble someone should seriously consider updating the quality of the guide.

Editorial Review:

This much requested book is an excellent companion to the Cruising Guide to the Virgin Islands. Featuring stunning, color, aerial photography, it captures 46 of the most popular anchorages in the Virgin islands. Graphic illustration overlays aid in navigation to show you where the reefs and rocks are and where you will find safe passage.

Used by the St. Petersburg Yacht Club 5 out of 5 stars.

This was a great book to learn from. It made the whole learning to sail process easy.

Great Illustrations, but feels incomplete 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The illustrations in this book really are outstanding; especially compared to the ASA Sailing Fundamentals book. However, the Sailing Fundamentals book is more complete when it comes to regulations and safety. I recommend using both books.

Nice primer 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a compact book with lots of diagrams. Makes for a nice complement to a beginner's keelboat sailing course. More detailed information can be found in the Colgates' "Fast Track to Cruising."

Nice intro to sailing 4 out of 5 stars.

Geared toward adult new sailors. Not a bad book at all...

Pefect Primer for the Beginning Sailor 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book with the intention of using it as a study guide for SailNY course in Basic Keelboat. The book told me all of the basic information I needed to be ready to intelligently discuss and put into practice basic knowledge about the parts of a boat, the parts of a sail, points of sail, rigging, water safety and rules of the "road."

I recommend this book for any beginning sailor. I was learning on old olympic racing boats with a jib and a mainsail, which were very responsive, so if I could learn what I needed, this book should be appropriate for smaller, slower craft without a doubt.

Editorial Review:

Although sailing is an enjoyable passion, it is also a challenging and dangerous sport. Therefore, safety is of paramount importance. This book covers the skills you will need for safety at sea.

Editorial Review:

Written to complement the ASA's teaching methods, Cruising Fundamentals addresses small-boat daysailors who wish to move on to overnight cruising in a larger boat--one more than 27 feet long. The book leads the reader through five progressively more advanced levels of boat handling, each divided into sections covering knowledge and techniques that can be learned ashore and those best learned underway. A chapter called Sailing the Cruising Yacht, for example, presents important information on readying the boat for sail, VHF radio protocol, and right-of-way rules before examining such topics as heaving-to and steering a compass course. This effective and logical progression makes the book a great learning tool not just for those graduating from smaller to larger sailboats or from daysailing to cruising, but for inactive sailors needing a refresher and for anyone planning a bareboat charter. The volume includes material on all aspects of piloting, maneuvering under power, managing the galley, diesel maintenance, passagemaking, and anchoring techniques.

Editorial Review:

Long characterized as an exceptional country within Latin America, Costa Rica has been hailed as a democratic oasis in a continent scorched by dictatorship and revolution; the ecological mecca of a biosphere laid waste by deforestation and urban blight; and an egalitarian, middle-class society blissfully immune to the violent class and racial conflicts that have haunted the region. Arguing that conceptions of Costa Rica as a happy anomaly downplay its rich heritage and diverse population, The Costa Rica Reader brings together texts and artwork that reveal the complexity of the country’s past and present. It characterizes Costa Rica as a site of alternatives and possibilities that undermine stereotypes about the region’s history and challenge the idea that current dilemmas facing Latin America are inevitable or insoluble.

This essential introduction to Costa Rica includes more than fifty texts related to the country’s history, culture, politics, and natural environment. Most of these newspaper accounts, histories, petitions, memoirs, poems, and essays are written by Costa Ricans. Many appear here in English for the first time. The authors are men and women, young and old, scholars, farmers, workers, and activists. The Costa Rica Reader presents a panoply of voices: eloquent working-class raconteurs from San José’s poorest barrios, English-speaking Afro-Antilleans of the Limón province, Nicaraguan immigrants, factory workers, dissident members of the intelligentsia, and indigenous people struggling to preserve their culture. With more than forty images, the collection showcases sculptures, photographs, maps, cartoons, and fliers. From the time before the arrival of the Spanish, through the rise of the coffee plantations and the Civil War of 1948, up to participation in today’s globalized world, Costa Rica’s remarkable history comes alive. The Costa Rica Reader is a necessary resource for scholars, students, and travelers alike.

Don't leave home without it 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Bruce Van Sant may be opinionated about the best way to take a cruising boat down the "Thorny Path," but those opinions are based on years of experience. Not everyone agrees with everything he's written, but even those who disagree (typically on one detail or another) will tell you that in general Van Sant's methods are based on sound principles. He gives you strategies if not a way of life that has worked for him for decades. Best of all, when you get to Luperon in the Dominican Republic you can look him up and tell him how the trip has gone so far.

The Gentleman's Guide To Passages South 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Bruce Van Sant is more than a little over-bearing in his style. Smug and self-congratulatory are his middle names. That said, the man has written an excellent, excellent book chock-full of insights, caveats, how-to's,and how-NOT to's, right down to a great but simple recipe for beer bread! There are at least a dozen good books you should have on board when you depart Fort Lauderdale for the Islands and boy, this is ONE of them for sure. Buy it! You will read it again and again.

Editorial Review:

This updated guide is considered the "Bible" by many cruising yachtsmen traveling between Florida and Venezuela. Includes many sketchcharts and GPS coordinates, plus a wealth of information for the sailor who would rather take it slow and easy entroute to paradise.

Editorial Review:

As paper navigational charts are replaced by vector images on computer screens, magnetic compasses enhanced by digital flux gate technology, and chronometers joined by atomic clocks, the demand has been mounting for an extensive update to the classic reference known worldwide as Dutton's. To meet the varied needs of today's recreational, naval, and commercial navigators the Naval Institute introduces this new edition of a guide that has remained the seafarers' choice for more than three-quarters of a century. It blends the traditional navigation techniques first compiled by Benjamin Dutton in 1926 with technological marvels of the twenty-first century to authoritatively cover all phases of surface navigation. For example, while the book acknowledges that many navigators still peer into the skies through sextant telescopes, it also helps them take full advantage of man-made Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites.

Valued as both an indispensable quick reference and a comprehensive text, Dutton's makes accessible such foreboding subjects as spherical trigonometry through the use of step-by-step explanations and examples that encourage practical use. To insure accuracy and relevancy, a board of experts made up of naval and Coast Guard officers, merchant mariners, accredited harbor pilots, and sea-service academy professors, has carefully reviewed this fifteenth edition. The result is an unparalleled treatment of the art and science of nautical navigation that both amateur and veteran navigators will use to safely navigate the waters of the world. 132 illustrations. Appendixes. Index. 81/2 x 11 inches.

Amateurish and poorly researched. 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I'll put it simply: this is a poor history of the compass. For almost ten years, publishers have been throwing money at anyone who might attempt to repeat the success of Dava Sobel's 'Longitude', and here we see the worst outcome of that lust for success. This book is worthless.

Editorial Review:

The story of the compass is shrouded in mystery and myth, yet most will agree it begins around the time of the birth of Christ in ancient China. A mysterious lodestone whose powers affected metal was known to the Chinese emperor. When this piece of metal was suspended in water, it always pointed north. This unexplainable occurrence led to the stone's use in feng shui, the Chinese art of finding the right location. However, it was the Italians, more than a thousand years later, who discovered the ultimate destiny of the lodestone and unleashed its formidable powers. In Amalfi sometime in the twelfth century, the compass was born, crowning the Italians as the new rulers of the seas and heralding the onset of the modern world. Retracing the roots of the compass and sharing the fascinating story of navigation through the ages, The Riddle of the Compass is Aczel at his most entertaining and insightful.

Esential Part of Boat Navigation 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

If you boat, you need charts. If you have charts, you need this book. This is a replacement for the government published chart 1. It is well laid out and easy to use once you spend a few minutes with it and a chart of your favorite area for boating.
Quibles - The abbreviations are split into three sections, so if you don't find your chart abbreviation in one index, go to the next, or the next. I feel that this would be more useful as one index, with descriptions like in a dictionary - Fl G - (All) Flashing Green light.....

Editorial Review:

Chart Number One is essential to correct and accurate use of nautical charts. More than a chart, it is a book that defines the symbols, abbreviations and terms used on charts. It also provides important information about buoys, light visibility (range) and aids to navigation.

This new and improved edition from Paradise Cay is a complete and accurate high quality reproduction of information provided by NOAA and NIMA.
