Great Keys Book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

We used this extensively on our travels to the Keys and gunkholed all over the place, including the Fla Bay, Flamingo. A must have book

Crusing the Florida Keys 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The book is very informative, and detailed. The only problem is that is is very large almost 600 pages and 2 inches thick. The book is not wire bound so handling it on deck while unway is somewhat risky. Best to study before putting up the sails.
The authors are obviously quite experienced in cruising this part of the country, & filled the publication with much important information.

Editorial Review:

The latest addition to Pelican's coastal charts series features full-colour NOAA nautical charts for the waters from the Port of Miami to the Dry Tortugas. Beautifully produced with hard covers and a flexible spiral binding, these maps are sturdy and easy-to-use. Focusing on two routes to the Florida Keys -- the inside route via the Intracoastal Waterway or the offshore option through Hawk Channel -- this book uses easy-to-read symbols to clearly mark anchorages, marinas, fuelling stations, bridges, depth soundings, restaurants, historical sites, and other important bits of information for boaters.

The very best guide for the gunkholer 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have two copies of the 2001 edition: one aboard my sailboat in Annapolis and the second in my office. Most of my use of the book has been in the middle Chesapeake. In crawling up and down the Magothy, Severn, South, West, Rhode, Chester, Wye, and Tred Avon Rivers this book has provided helpful insight into what I would find. This book and the Maptech chart book are all you need to find your way to and through the backwaters of the Chesapeake.

Cruisers 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 5 people found this review helpful.

We have a power boat but found this book to be very informative & helpful. We are planning our trip, have not been to the Chesapeake in about 25 years, and have found this book the best yet in our preparations. We like to anchor out and this book is informative not specifically focusing jumping from marina to marina like many guides do.

Editorial Review:

Acclaimed as the ultimate guide to uncrowded anchorages, Cruising the Chesapeake is the reference of choice among sailors and powerboaters seeking to avoid the beaten path. This new Third Edition has been expanded to include coverage of the Atlantic coasts of New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland, including Delaware Bay. Readers get:

- A cruise planner for short or long itineraries - An expansive catalog of GPS coordinates - Major updates to all piloting and shoreside facilities

Editorial Review:

Long typecast as the hotrods of the sea--fast but dangerous--modern cruising multihulls actually are among the safest and most comfortable cruising sailboats available. Modern multihulls offer significant advantages over single-hull sailboats: They sail faster, have more living space, they're more comfortable, more stable, they can sail safely in much shallower water, and, because their stability comes from widely spaced hulls and not from tons of lead hung off the keel, they don't sink. Given the ultimate disaster, which would you choose: A capsized yet habitable boat, floating awash, or a self-righting boat sitting at the bottom of the ocean? And multihulls are fast. A typical weekend cruiser's circle of operations might double if he switches to a multihull. A transatlantic voyage might be cut by a third. No less an organization than the U.S. Navy decided that applications requiring an extremely steady platform at sea were best suited to, of all things, a catamaran.

The Cruising Multihull supplies the reader with all the latest information about design, construction, rigs, seamanship, safety, and a point-by-point rebuttal of the "accepted wisdom" concerning multihull dangers. It will help you decide whether a multihull is right for you; which multihull--cat or tri--is best for your needs; whether you should build one yourself, have one built, or buy one off the rack. And, of course, The Cruising Multihull shows you how to get the most from your boat.

"I don't know of a more thorough survey of modern cruising multihulls than this book. For strangers to these boats who want to know more about them, as well as for multihull sailors eager to learn from a capable, articulate designer and sailor with his own point of view, I enthusiastically recommend The Cruising Multihull."--John Rousmaniere

"Finally, a multihull voice which does not proselytize. Instead, logic and information pack the pages of Chris White's . . . The Cruising Multihull."--WoodenBoat

Just Buy The Weekend Navigtor 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

When this book was published I gave it a quick look in our library and bought it. I use it in an Electronic Navigation class I teach at a local ASA Sailing School. It is the best in its field, very understandable, gorgeous illustrations and it is one of the best manuals for Maptech Chart Navigator which they provide free on the accompanying CD.
There is nothing close to this book.

Editorial Review:

Can piloting a boat really be this easy?

Traditional navigation with its chart plotting, compass errors, and current vectors requires years to master. Serious boaters learn it eventually, but with $100 GPS receivers offering 50-foot position accuracy anywhere in the world, it’s no longer necessary to master the art before enjoying the sport. The Weekend Navigator is the first book to recognize that affordable, simple-to-use electronics demand a radically new approach to teaching navigation. Bob Sweet lets you find your way on the water immediately, learning by rather than before doing.

This innovative guide’s quick-reference format shows you how to:

  • Pinpoint locations at all times
  • Determine the precise ranges and bearings of destinations
  • Compensate for wind and current effects
  • Avoid underwater hazards

Cruising Guide to Western Florida 4 out of 5 stars.
29 of 31 people found this review helpful.

This much-needed guide provide a wealth of useful information for the cruising sailor. Written in an enthusiastic and readable style, the author invites the reader to explore the varied cruising grounds of Western Florida. Of great value in this coastline of difficult channels is the detailed information given for each approach, including low water depths in shoal channels. Another feature is a listing of the charts (by number) to cover each area. Photographs and non-navigational charts are also shown throughout the book. Altogether, an informative and useful guide.

Editorial Review:

This updated guide to the waterways of western Florida provides a useful tool for all cruising boaters - delighting passengers and armchair sailors as well with its good humoured text. It offers readers information on marina's, shoreside attractions, water depths, facilities, anchorages, and local geography, while also covering the history and folklore of the region. From lovely Pine Island South to serene Gasparilla Island and Cabbage Key, this guide describes the splendour of the Withlacoochee, the Steinhatchee and the Suwannee rivers in the Big Ben area, the Ten Thousand Islands down south, and the intracoastal waterways in between. It covers the boating facilities of such towns as Tapron Springs, Dunedin, Clearwater, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Fort Myers, and Naples.

Outstanding and unique 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

We have used Brian Fagans guidebooks from SD to SF for many years, but this is the best of the lot. We recently led a cruise to the Channel Islands, and made this a "must" for the cruisers, all of whom praised it highly. Really THE guidebook to coastal cruising in Central-Southern California---and a bargain!

Excellent coverage of the channel islands 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

From a recent sailing trip out of Santa Barbara through the channel islands I can tell you that this book is invaluable. His treatment of safe ports and refuges (arranged very well but conditions) was fantastic and kept us out of danger.

Editorial Review:

Comprehensive and authoritative, this guide combines and updates two smaller, long-trusted regional books to provide seamless coverage of the entire California coast from just outside the Golden Gate Bridge to Mexico, with special attention given to the popular offshore islands between Point Conception and San Diego. Brian Fagan draws upon more than three decades of experience sailing those waters under all conditions to offer the definitive cruising guide for both sailors and powerboaters.

Good for Non-Map readers 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

If you don't know how to read a chart, this book is for you. It has comprehensive information necessary to learn about coastal navigation. Not a good replacement for actually being on the water and seeing the things charts show but a good book for the basics.

Editorial Review:

Navigation is the science of establishing your position and managing your yacht's progress with a minimum of risk and a maximum of enjoyment. Coastal Navigation's visual layout, full of graphs, charts and diagrams, covers chartwork, aids to navigation, tidal heights, tidal currents, estimating your position, electronic navigation aids, poor visibility and many other topics.
