Excellent source... More than a set of charts! 5 out of 5 stars.

Very usable in it's small page spiral format. Flipping pages as one cruises north or south is easy, and takes very little space at the helm. The annotations indicating marina locations save looking in separate guides when a stopping point is desired. Some obvious side trips (e.g. Banana River) are omitted and would have helped increase usefulness if included.

Great book, you have to have them to run the intracoastal and it's MUCH cheaper at Amazon then in the bookstores - or boat stores!!

Finding Our Way in Florida 5 out of 5 stars.

This book has been such a gift! We travel the intracoastal waterways in Jacksonville/St.Augustine Florida all year long and found this book to be so helpful.

Editorial Review:

Thousands of cruising boats travel the Intracoastal Waterway, 1,090 miles of toll-free canals running from Virginia, to Florida each year. The book's Waterway charts resemble AAA strip maps. The accepted low-cost alternative for coverage of the entire Waterway.

Editorial Review:

Bruce Van Sant writes the popular guide The Gentleman’s Guide to Passages South which many cruising sailors call their "Bible" for traveling through the islands of the trade winds to South America. It has advice that BlueWater Sailing calls "priceless".

In Tricks of the Trades, Van Sant widens the scope to handle questions of health, thieves, con artists, corrupt officials, equipment, brokers, outfitters and more. You find sound counsel for "single handers" and unique tips on how to find and outfit a boat for your trade winds cruise.

In his fourth decade of living and cruising foreign, Van Sant has amassed stratagems for sailors cruising abroad for the first time. Not how to survive, but how to live well while cruising safely and comfortably. In short, Tricks for successfully cruising the islands of the trade winds.

Tricks of the Trades presents a lively documentary from Van Sant’s 45 years of sailing and seven years of trawlering. It gives graphic and detailed accounts of natural effects you can use to cheat the ceaseless winds and wild seas of their power to deny you safe and comfortable passage through the islands of the trades of any ocean.

basically a thesis, written from published works 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Save your money. Buy a book from one who has the expertise to write on this subject. Bernard Moitessier can say more in a few pages than this book has to offer.

Extensive current & historical information for Singlehanders 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is a reference book. A "must" for anyone persueing the reality of offsore singlehanded sailing. This is not a basic how-to, but rather assumes the reader has some relevant experience.

The writer delves into yacht and rigging design from the historical perspective all the way through to modern day Vendee' and Around Alone (ex BOC) type purpose built (solo) racing machines. None or very limited coverage of Mini Transat(s) or 6.5m class boats.

Chapters also include psycological motivation, sleep deprivation, steering, stores, etc.

Some pictures & sketches mostly b/w

Editorial Review:

Henderson gives a complete history of bluewater solo sailing. He describes the gear, boats, rigs, and techniques that have worked, with emphasis on recent technology developments. He also tells the stories of those crazy, fascinating sailors who have shown us the way.

Editorial Review:

Practical considerations aside, there is something soul-satisfying about looking to the sky to plot one's course. And despite the proliferation of electronic navigational devices, celestial navigation remains an essential tool for those who do not wish to be caught short when modern technology fails. Ideally, today's navigators employ a combination of DR and GPS technology, along with traditional methods of celestial navigation.

In this easy-to-use guide, Hewitt Schlereth explains clearly and concisely how to navigate any stretch of sea using only a hand-held sextant, a watch, a plotting sheet and a copy of the Nautical Almanac. The basic process is simple: take a sight with a sextant, establish a secondary reference or benchmark sight, compare the two sights and plot the result of the comparison on a chart. Schlereth demonstrates how to take sights by the sun, moon, stars and planets, discussing the advantages and disadvantages of each method. The reader is taken carefully through several examples and situational illustrations, making this a most effective self-teaching guide.

Also discussed in a straightforward manner are the fundamental theories of astronomy and celestial navigation. Common errors are reviewed and several tips on how to improve accuracy are given.

Bareboat Book is a hit 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I just returned from our first bareboat experience and this book helped me pass three US Sailing exams so now I'm prepared for charters anywhere in the world. I was a boat owner previously but never took the exams for certification and never had a charter.

With the help of this handy book along with other US Sailing publications, I passed 101, 102 and 104 certifications. This book is a greay way to start your braeboat experience.

Editorial Review:

The third of US SAILING's popular Keelboat Series, Bareboat Cruising covers the skills and terminology required to plan and execute a successful bareboat charter. A bareboat charter provides you with the opportunity to sail a boat on your own, and offers the thrill of using your sailing skills, exploring new or favorite waters and spending time with family and friends. Bareboat Cruising explains what you need to make your charter a memorable success: planning and provisioning, systems, motorsailing, weather, anchoring, navigation, and safety. Used by sailing schools around the country, Bareboat Cruising is published by the national authority for sailing in the U.S.

Fantastic Guide-The Real Deal 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Before purchasing this book, I did a bit of research on the different guides available. One had a lot of advertisements, but was popular. It was more like a Frommers travel book. This one was written by the guy who actually used equipment relied upon by chartmakers for local depth soundings. You could tell by his "local" hints that he really took the time and effort to give you the insider's view. From recomming "Mr.Fantastic" (a local boat vendor who sold us delicious lobster), to recommendations on local restaurants at each of our island stops along the way, this book was fantastic. The black and white pages made it all the more authentic as not being overly commercialized. In each port he gave highly reliable waypoints which I fed into my Garmin GPS, and everything worked like clockwork. His depth soundings in the anchorages were highly reliable as well. Our crew of 6 sailors, all passionate for adventure in the Windward Islands, raved about this book. Other books were aboard, but this one quickly became the one that we relied upon. It was concise and to the point, and we really enjoyed using it. Accolades to Mr. Pavlidis. This is a winner!!

Editorial Review:

With 80 sketch charts this is the most comprehensive guide covering The Windward Islands. The Windward Islands Guide contains GPS waypoints, approaches and routes, anchorages, dive sites, an extensive appendix, photos and a bibliography. As with all of Steve's guides it contains sections on history, marina services, and much more useful info.

Editorial Review:

The common seaman and the pirate in the age of sail are romantic historical figures who occupy a special place in the popular culture of the modern age. And yet in many ways, these daring men remain little known to us. Like most other poor working people of the past, they left few first-hand accounts of their lives. But their lives are not beyond recovery. In this book, Marcus Rediker uses a huge array of historical sources (court records, diaries, travel accounts, and many others) to reconstruct the social cultural world of the Anglo-American seamen and pirates who sailed the seas in the first half of the eighteenth century. Rediker tours the sailor's North Atlantic, following seamen and their ships along the pulsing routes of trade and into rowdy port towns. He recreates life along the waterfront, where seafaring men from around the world crowded into the sailortown and its brothels, alehouses, street brawls, and city jail. His study explores the natural terror that inevitably shaped the existence of those who plied the forbidding oceans of the globe in small, brittle wooden vessels. It also treats the man-made terror--the harsh discipline, brutal floggings, and grisly hangings--that was a central fact of life at sea. Rediker surveys the commonplaces of the maritime world: the monotonous rounds of daily labor, the negotiations of wage contracts, and the bawdy singing, dancing, and tale telling that were a part of every voyage. He also analyzes the dramatic moments of the sailor's existence, as Jack Tar battled wind and water during a slashing storm, as he stood by his "brother tars" in a mutiny or a stike, and as he risked his neck by joining a band of outlaws beneath the Jolly Roger, the notorious pirate flag. Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea focuses upon the seaman's experience in order to illuminate larger historical issues such as the rise of capitalism, the genesis the free wage labor, and the growth of an international working class. These epic themes were intimately bound up with everyday hopes and fears of the common seamen.

Don't Leave Home (or the Dock) Without It! 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 22 people found this review helpful.

Our most frequently asked question: "What's the one book you'd recommend for a boater?" Our answer every time: "Chapman's."

Whether you're a new boater just getting started or an old salt needing a little refresher, this is your dependable one-volume reference. When we need material for our "Boating/PWC Basics" course, this is where we go.

The book is continuously updated and fresh, with new information on topics like GPS and how to use it and Digital Selective Calling (DSC) for your marine radio. It continues to present essential and complete information on preparing to get underway, operating and navigating your boat, the practice of good seamanship, docking or mooring your boat, and how to put it away for the winter (which some of us have to do!).

Chapman's has been a fixture in our library (and on our boats) since the 50th edition in 1972. And even though we pay a little more for it now than the $8.95 price in 1972, you'll still find it a great value at Amazon's price shown above.

Our advice: Don't leave home (or the dock) without it.

Editorial Review:

A revised and updated guide to recreational boating discusses the latest developments in satellite navigation, marine electronics, communications systems, and safety at sea. 100,000 first printing. $25,000 ad/promo.

Not my cup of tea 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

There seems to be an odd hero worship associated with this author and his book about adventure and glory seeking. I found Goss's feats to be impressive but the account disturbing. I finished the book wishing I hadn't read it. He comes across as quite impressed with himself and has little of the modesty and understatement that I have found more typical of good adventure writing. (Compare Bernard Moitessier's books about equally difficult sailing accomplishments.) If you are looking for a philosopher/adventurer, Goss is not it. His reliance on expletives in key passages gives the account a vulgar quality. Like many others I was mystified as to why so much ink was spent on the fund raising effort. There probably was a good story there but I don't think he told it. Clearly Pete Goss is an awesome sailor, but this book portrays him more as attention seeker and even his website still boasts about the rescue. If you haven't read sailing books before read Moitessier or Smeeton instead.

Editorial Review:

Pete Goss became a national and international hero when he rescued French yachtsman Raphael Dinelli as his boat sank beneath him in the round-the-world single-handed sailing race, the Vendee Globe, on Christmas Day 1996. In doing so Pete scuppered his own chances in the race but was awarded the Legion d'Honneur by France's president and made a friend for life in Dinelli. Close to the Wind is his own story of the race and its dramas, his revolutionary boat, Aqua Quorum, his thoughts and emotions during four months of solitude at sea, the extraordinary surgery that he had to perform on his own elbow and the aftermath of the rescue in the Southern Ocean.

Comprehensive and thoroughly-accessible. 4 out of 5 stars.
78 of 79 people found this review helpful.

"Basic Coastal Navigation" is a comprehensive and thoroughly-accessible guide to piloting small sail and power boats.

Written in a self-instruction format with exercises, questions, and answers included in each chapter, the book offers step-by-step coverage of what sometimes can be a daunting subject.

Frank J. Larkin takes care to write in a simple (but never dry) prose style, using easy-to-understand terms. Also, the book's layout is superb: There's lots of white space, large graphics, and varying font sizes and shadings.

Larkin also includes helpful memory aids, such as "Lat is Flat" for Latitude and--for a Black-Topped/White Buoy, which indicates an obstruction--"Think of the black top as a storm such as a Nor'easter."

The author covers everything from nautical charts and plotting true courses to dead reckoning and electronic navigation systems (including GPS).

All sea-persons with small boats--whether power or sail--should purchase this book.

Editorial Review:

Basic Coastal Navigation is a clearly written, easy to understand introduction to coastal navigation, outlining the techniques of piloting that are fundamental to safe navigation for smal boats, whether power or sail. The reader is guided from simple to more complex piloting solutions and eventually learns to plot a complete day trip.
