Excellent source of information 5 out of 5 stars.
31 of 32 people found this review helpful.

Cornell offers his own viewpoints as well as those of others, does a good job of labeling facts vs. options, and answers a lot of questions I had about cruising. Safety equipment, storms, piracy, dangerous areas, firearms, and communications are all covered well. Common equipment failures are given, along with statistics to back them up. For example, how often does the mast of a cuising yacht really fail, and how?

Zaggats of cruising 2 out of 5 stars.

I am not a world cruiser and have only ventured a few miles from shore and then not too far from the other side of the sound within which we sail every summer. This book was a disappointment. It is basically a distillation of the periodic surveys the author conducts of people who cruise in small yachts either on their own or as part of an offshore rally such as the ARC. The problem for me is that the book amounts to a collection of advice, not from people who necessarily know that much about cruising, but instead from those it was convenient for Cornell to interview. It's like a Zaggat guide, filled with lots of pepole's opinions but not necessarily people who know anything about food. Frankly, I don't know enough to judge whether this interviewees ideas are right on, or that interviewees ideas are nonsense-- that's not my point. I was looking for a single authoritative voice, not a report on what a collection of people with the funds and gumption to cross oceans happen to believe. This one is going back.

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive third volume in Jimmy Cornell's acclaimed and successful World Cruising series is the ultimate authority on boats, gear, and techniques for long-distance cruising under sail.

Distilled from surveys of 15,000 sailors by the world's leading promoter of blue-water voyaging, it answers in detail the most frequently asked questions on world cruising, including what boats people are sailing, what navigation and seamanship practices work best, what equipment is really essential, and more.

Oceanic navigation classic 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The most complete study of early navigation I have come across. The author does a fantastic job of comparing the different styles of landfinding as used by the Pacific islanders. Lewis brings the knowledge and experience of an accomplished western sailor and navigator to his studies, and in doing so is able compare and contrast ancient and modern techniques. A scholarly study of primitive navigation, the book is not always an easy read, however for the reader looking for a complete comparison this is the volume to have.

Ancient Polynesian navigation 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was a Naval Officer for 22 years. 5 years of that time was spent as a Navigator on two different submarines. I was fascinated by the way the Polynesians can find their way over hundreds of miles of open ocean with no instruments. As David Lewis observes, "It's amazing how much you notice when your life depends on it."

The "ancient art" in the title is a misnomer. They still have Navigators in Hawaii and they continue to both practice their skills themselves and teach their children. See the YouTube postings of Ed Kaiwi for more information about Hawaiian lore.

Editorial Review:

This new edition includes a discussion of theories about traditional methods of navigation developed during the past two decades, the story of the renaissance of star navigation throughout the Pacific, and material about navigation systems in Indonesia, Siberia, and the Indian Ocean.

As complete as they get 5 out of 5 stars.

I got this book as reference for a medieval historical I was writing, set partially on the Saone and Rhone rivers. This was possibly the best reference I used since I can't go over there to check out the place in person, and the people I know who have been there haven't been able to give me much information.

This book recounts incredible detail about the countryside and regional dishes, availability of shopping, hotels, and tourist spots, and there are little humorous stories about some of the stops along the way. The detailed accounts of each lock along the canals is absolutely amazing and I'm sure quite helpful for those who actually find themselves there.

Unfortunately, the canal system of France was started after my book was set, so I couldn't use the lock and interesting layovers along the canal info, but...

Now I want to go to France and cruise all these fascinating rivers and canals! I'm afraid that's going to cost considerably more than this book does. Until then, I'll continue to peruse the book and dream.

Editorial Review:

This is a guide to the varied network of inland waterways throughout France. Details of chateaux, historic sites and local attractions as well as practical information on moorings, repair yards, shops, restaurants, fuel and water points and other facilities are given.

The guide is very useful 3 out of 5 stars.
13 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I've used the previous edition of this guide and have found it to be very useful in preparing a trip. The guide appears written from the perspective of a small powerboat, thus encouraging quite a few surprizes if taken too literally. It is not clear how "updated" the new edition is. I've found I got tired before I could find substantial changes or cruising insights.

Just the facts please! 3 out of 5 stars.

Good publication. Could benefit from MANY more detailed maps and pictures as well as MUCH more anchorage information. For the true sailing voyager that won't afford a Marina this may NOT be the right guide for you. Well articulated, but ambiguous prose, can prove a bit misleading. I prefer the dry hard facts outlined in easily referenced, numbered sequences.

Editorial Review:

The only cruising guide devoted exclusively to North Carolina, this book covers almost every body of water along the coast as far inland as it is safe to navigate. The guide includes historical summaries, coastal folklore, listings of coastal marinas and their services, and tips on shoreside attractions.

This book is extremely useless 1 out of 5 stars.
17 of 18 people found this review helpful.

We bought this book in summer 2002 for our trip down the ICW that fall. We bought it based on the fact it was a "Fourth Edition" ! It is SO out of date it is not funny, and in fact could be dangerous to rely on it, or at least an inconvenience. It might be somewhat useful if they updated it. After using Skipper Bob's Anchorages book, and his Marina guide, (which combined, cost less than the Moeller book) I would say these are the bible of ICW travel. They provide mile by mile anchorage info and rankings, and marina info such as types of fuel, price, slip prices, etc. VERY USEFUL and up to date info. They are updated every year, with changes to anchoranges/marina info submitted by the author, as well as the readers.

Editorial Review:

The only one-volume guide to traversing the entire protected East Coast waterway, The Intracoastal Waterway, Norfolk to Miami: A Cockpit Cruising Handbook is updated to reflect changes in channels and shoreside facilities. Offering unique, mile-by-mile descriptions and accurate navigation advice, the Moellers describe more than 300 marinas and nearly 100 opening bridges, and provide concise instructions for negotiating more than 100 tested anchorages.

"In our opinion, the easiest-to-use guide to bridges, marinas, anchorages, waterway junctions, towns, and so on."--SAIL

"Unlike any other publication, its format is simply a mile-by-mile listing of every bridge, anchorage, marina, shoal, and obstruction. . . . It's the best [money] you'll ever spend."--Practical Sailor

Great history, interesting people, beautiful boats 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I first saw this book while having dinner on a friends boat. I liked it so much, especially since I used to sail on a Herreshoff boat when I was a kid, that I got my own copy. Its really well written, and the Herreshoff family is pretty amazing. Nat isn't ever going to make Father of the Year, but he really designed some great boats. His son Francis somehow survived his father and made his own great boats. This is a beautiful book, with lots of amazing photographs, and a great story too. I never knew about all the power boats that the Herreshoffs designed, or all the boats for the navy. I think even people who just want an interesting book to read with beautiful photographs would like this book.

Editorial Review:

Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in Bristol, Rhode Island, produced the most technically advanced, popular, and prominent boats of their day. Today, Herreshoff boats are recognized as the most historically significant boats of their time, and command some of the highest prices. Herreshoff Sailboats covers some of the major classes of Herreshoff boats including schooners, yawls, ketches, sloops, Q, R-, nad J- class yachts, and lanches. The story begins with John and Charles Herreshoff who founded the boatyard in 1832. The sale of Herreshoff to the Haeffner Corp. in the 1920s is also profiled. The epilogue explains the company’s decision not to build fiberglass boats, and close its doors. Vintage black and whilte photos will tell the story, and modern color photography will show Herreshoff’s role in yachting today.

Quick Reference cards provide accurate, concise boating information when and where you need it most.

* They are great for all types of boaters from weekend day sailors to offshore cruisers and professional mariners.

* Printed in full color on weatherproof high strength plastic, 8.5" x 11" three-hole cards are impervious to conditions at sea which quickly destroy laminated paper references.

* The widely used Quick Reference Navigation Rules, now in its 6th edition is a proven navigation tool which has been in use by the U.S. Coast Guard, USCG Auxiliary, U.S. Power Squadrons, and thousands of recreational boaters and professional mariners for nearly two decades.

* Inland and international rules (COLREGS - Regulations for the Prevention of Collision at Sea) including right-of way, lights, and sound signals, and the U.S. Buoyage system are all included in a concise, accurate and graphically pleasing format which is easy to understand and use, quickly when you need them most, on deck in the wheelhouse or cockpit.

Editorial Review:

Here, entirely updated, is the latest edition of the most complete, authoritative cruising guide to the northeastern coast. The bible for Eastern sailors and powerboaters for more than half a century has been thoroughly overhauled and expertly refitted. For the preparation of the twelfth edition, the authors visited nearly all the harbors, talked with harbormasters and marina owners, and reevaluated earlier judgments. The Guide tells you how to dodge bad currents and edge around shoal water, and where to anchor and find essential services, including pump-out stations, fuel docks, and a hot shower. It notes channels and harbors that have been dredged or shoaled up; recently replaced buoys; and changes in marinas, boatyards, and other facilities. This guide is far more than a traditional cruising guide, providing valuable information on weather, tides, coastal geography and geology, fog, marine birds, animals, sea conditions, and even places of historical interest ashore. The authors—who know these great cruising grounds as old friends—relate the histories of the towns, ports, vessels, lighthouses, and even rocks you'll encounter. Black-and-white photographs and maps throughout.

Good East Fla Book 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Super book and a must have book. If Claiborne says be cautious in an area, you better be cautious. We used it extensively and it is a must have book. A little more information on best places to stay for taking a trip to the Bahamas would be a good tie-into that route. St. John's River

Editorial Review:

Boating enthusiasts will eagerly welcome this thoroughly researched and comprehensive guide. This book is the most complete source of detail on the facilities and waters of the Sunshine State's eastern shore. In this updated fourth edition, the reader will find a wide range of up-to-date information, including: Current navigational data; Marinas and other boating facilities; Water Depths; Shoreside dining and other attractions; Anchorage locales along the entire shore. New for this edition is an overview of bridges at the beginning of each chapter. As with his other guides, author Claibrone Young provides dozens of helpful maps, photographs, and chart references. Intriguing historical profiles and coastal folklore will give visitors a flavour of the region. Sections on unsafe areas and shoals will help boaters avoid dangerous waters.
