Editorial Review:

An invaluable reference for professional and amateur divers, this volume presents the extraordinary richness of the underwater world in elegant pictorial layouts. Selected for their geographical settings and biodiversity, 50 of the world's best dives are described in detail by an editorial board of internationally renowned professional divers, and illustrated with superb photographs. Organized geographically, there are chapters devoted to the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean. An overview presents the outstanding natural features and unique characteristics of each region, followed by in-depth descriptions of recommended dives within each area. The distinguished editors present a thoughtful analysis of every dive site, including a description of the topography, typical species of fish likely to be seen, and highlights that make each site noteworthy, such as frequent dolphin sightings, rare species, etc. A three-dimensional reconstruction of the seabed helps guide readers through each site, while sidebars provide such essential information as maximum depth, level of difficulty, visibility, strength of current, and best time to go. Throughout the book, remarkable close-ups and double-page spreads depict the wealth of wildlife divers will encounter as they explore these exceptional dive sites.

Pretty Good- Wish the GPS numbers were better 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book as a way of finding new GPS coordinates in the Tampa area to dive. This book was pretty good, with a great description of each site. However, the GPS coordinates are pretty much run of the mill numbers, you'll find every local charter dive boat and fishing boat there, but not a bad place to start. Where the book starts to fall apart though is when it starts telling you, Place X is 1.7 miles on a 335 course north of point Y. That info. does you no good. When you are looking for a ledge the size of a small car, close doesn't count. Also, it seemed like all the more interesting sites were given in Loran numbers. Anyone who knows GPS knows that you can't accurately convert Loran to GPS, so those numbers are worthless for all but the 3 people in the world still using Loran.
Overall, a great book for people just learning a new area to fish or dive, but expect everyone in that area to have that number. Good book with good info. For those looking for more GPS numbers, try nauticalcharts.com... VERY GOOD MAPS.

Contains inaccuracies 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book in preparation for diving Nitrox on a dive vacation. One of the tables simply did not make sense. I contacted the publisher, who, after at least 2 emails from me, provided me with corrections by .pdf file. I subsequently asked the publisher how it intended to address the clear inaccuracies in this book and received no response. Further, although the publisher includes errata for certain books on its website (www.bestpub.com), despite my notification of these errors, it has issued no similar errata for "Recreational Nitrox." In my opinion, anyone relying upon this book without inquiring into the validity of the information provided therein is misplacing their reliance.

Editorial Review:

Nitrox has gained wide acceptance in the recreational scuba diving community over the past few decades. While it is widely used by the military as well as technical, commercial and scientific divers, the techniques, procedures, and tables have been refined to the point that with training, nitrox diving can be safe and enjoyable for the recreational open-circuit scuba diver.

This authoritative guide provides in-depth discussions of physics, physiology, oxygen toxicity and oxygen limits. It reviews the latest safeguards and procedures, equipment considerations, and guides the reader through easy-to-follow nitrox dive planning examples. Included are nitrox planning tables plus the latest NOAA oxygen limits. This book is a must for every certified or prospective nitrox diver.

Editorial Review:

Gay Morse of Little Cayman introduced her book "So You Want to Live on An Island" in 2004. This book is a hilarious account of true stories as experienced by a dive instructor in the Caribbean. Most people think that the day to day life of a dive master is that dream job of the Caribbean. However, you would never imagine that searching for lost dentures, chasing floating toupees, or answering questions such as : Does water go around the island? , What time does the 9:00am boat leave? , How deep is the sand? and Do you live here? are all part of the daily routine. The book offers the pros and cons of island life as well as interesting historical data about the island of Little Cayman, great tips for surviving life on an island as well as local nicknames for fish, birds, and trees. The author has realized that the day to day grind, can actually be quite humorous, depending on how you look at it. She GUARANTEES that you will laugh "out loud" and be amused from cover to cover. This is a book that can be enjoyed by dive instructors, dive masters and dive store customers as well as anyone who has an interest in traveling to islands, or wanting to retire there. Ideal for gifts, dive master required reading and a GREAT vacation beach read.

One of the most definitive books on dives sites for Cayman! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Lawson has continued with the attention to detail that he began in the 1st Edition with the best guide to dives sites for the Caymans.

Very logical layout... format is easy to read and particularly interesting to follow...

There are books that might do a good job of describing a particular site or two, but this book is the most comprehensive I've found.

Not good for snorkeling sites 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book with the hopes of learning about good snorkeling sites at Grand Cayman. I wanted information so that I could decide what places would be worth our time and would be okay to take our 9 year to (as well as a map of the location). I was quite disappointed. It describes numererous dive sites and gives a "star rating" for snorkeling of these sites. However, it does not really address snorkeling individually. There are several well known snorkel sites that are not even mentioned in this book. Thankfully, I learned about these sites over the internet so that we can enjoy them during our stay. This book did not help me prepare at all. I imagine it is good for those who dive though.

Editorial Review:

With more than 260 diving and snorkeling adventures, this gorgeously illustrated guide presents the best marine sites of these Caribbean isles. Organized by island, The Dive Sites of the Cayman Islands, Second Edition, rates each site and describes the conditions, marine life, depths, and access. It also highlights special points of interest and offers features such as the Cayman Turtle Farm, Stingray City, rare and unusual marine life of the Caymans, and underwater photography and video tips.

Editorial Review:

"The Technical Guide to Gas Blending" is an authoritative, insightful text that explores and explains all aspects of gas blending in a logical, business-oriented way. Many gas blending courses are offered today, however, most of them have a narrow focus on the mechanics of partial pressure mixing. This book covers an important gap in the subject. The author, a pioneer in gas blending technologies and a manufacturing engineer by profession, acknowledges the fact that the selection, organization, planning and operation of your mixed gas station can have a significant impact on your business. This book will help you:

( Evaluate and select the most appropriate blending method for your operation

( Plan and execute the layout of your blending station

( Prepare the equipment and understand all issues of equipment interaction

( Do logistics planning

( Produce and dispense mixed gas safely

The author takes a scientific approach in every topic, explaining the subject matter from the first principles. Long-standing, erroneous assumptions are challenged and critical thinking is encouraged throughout the text.

A valuable acquisition for the South Pacific diver 4 out of 5 stars.
20 of 21 people found this review helpful.

Before my recent dive trip to Fiji I looked for a good fish ID book for the area (one with photos, not paintings) and came up short. It doesn't seem like anyone has done a comprehensive reference for this area comparable to Humann's works on the Caribbean.

However, I did find Paddy Ryan's fine volume in the lending library at the resort where I was staying. To my surprise, I find it to be much more than the typical, superficial "snorkeler's guide." It's a small but beautifully produced volume with excellent photography and a well-written text. It's a good balance of photos to help identify the most common South Pacific reef fish combined with informative text on the behavior and biology of reef fish, other vertebrates, and invertebrates.

I didn't buy a copy when I had a chance in a local shop, and I regretted it on the long flight home. I'm buying my personal copy as soon as I finish writing this. Take my word for it, for snorkelers, novice divers! , or serious divers, this is money well spent!

the best dive book ever 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I don't know that I've ever read a better dive book or travel guide. The author covers every minute detail, and somehow, it still reads well--a fascinating and well-treated subject. David Leonard shows great wit and a solid knowledge of his subject.

The photographs are amazing, too.

Excellent Book 4 out of 5 stars.

One of the most informative books about diving in the Pacific , next to Tim Rocks lonely planet guides for diving and snorkelling in Micronesia this is the best , only this one accomodates all the islands in one book meanwhile lonely planet is done over three books .
I definately recommend it !

Best dive guide for Micronesia 5 out of 5 stars.

I went back and bought 2 more for my travel companions! We just came back from Truk & Yap and I never saw my book, it was traveling around our group so much! We are planning to return to Palau, so I bought extra copies as self defense! The best dive guide I have found to the islands.

Great info, Maps, & Pics 5 out of 5 stars.

Wasn't sure what to expect when ordering, but am very happy with the purchase. The maps are great! I have lived in Guam & find that the info in the book is very helpful. I'm still learning my way around the dive world here & now know where some of these places are that people are talking about. It has also helped plan our next dive trip to other islands. Great info on Palau, Chuuk, & Yap. So much to see & so little time!!!
