Nicely illustrated comprehensive manual to scuba diving 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Jackson's Complete Diving Manual is a large format paperback printed on glossy stock and full of color photographs and helpful illustrations and diagrams, ranging from concepts to technical drawings. It's not a picture book, just one that uses graphics and visuals very well to illustrate text. Jackson is an award-winning photographer and advanced diver, and the book also benefitted from input by Scuba Diving Magazine technical editor Michael R. Ange, author of "Diver Down."

The Complete Diving Manual is a great and pleasant way to get an idea what scuba diving is all about. It's a rather complete introduction to beginners and newcomers, but contains enough detail and useful reference diagrams that the book has its place in the library of any diver, all the way yo advanced and technical. To give an example: where most general introduction to diving may have brief description of, say, the second stage in a regulator, Jackson provides detailed drawings and diagrams that show and label every part. That way readers can, if they choose, figure out exactly how a piece of equipment works. This approach even extends to more advanced equipment, such as rebreathers. There are full diagrams how a regular scuba unit compares to a semiclosed rebreather and that from a closed-circuit rebreather (where each of 24 parts and systems is shown and labeled). Yet, it never gets dry as everything is accompanied by terific photographs as well.

In terms of overall content, Jackson covers all the basics. What diving is all about, equipment, physiology, training, planning, types of diving, technical diving, safety and dangers, travel, trips, and so on. Type is large and easy to read. It is also logically arranged, and, thankfully, omits the numerous (and often redundant) tips and tricks and bullet points you'd find in the "for Dummies" book on scuba diving that essentially covers all the same points. Jackson simply builds the information into the text itself. Also helpful: a very detailed glossary of diving terms and a listing of all the pertaining agencies and organizations.

The Complete Diving Manual is just that; it provides a total overview of scuba diving and what all it entails. It's all presented in a large format, colorful book that uses a variety of visuals to illustrate, entertain and explain. Want to see the conceptual difference in both basic and balanced diaphragm and piston first stage mechanisms? It's in there, shown in simple, logical graphics. Apart from the methodical and comprehensive description of all aspects of scuba, Jackson's ability to pick just the right visuals to illustrate and explain are the strongest parts of the Complete Diving Manual.

a classic must have for freedivers 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this book. It puts me in the water on those sad days when I can't get out. I recomend this for anyway that enjoys spearfishing, freediving, or the ocean.

Really wonderful book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I spent a summer as a kid freediving and spearfishing in La Jolla, Calif.. This book took me back to that time and documents a history of spearfishing that goes all the way back to its birth here in the US. A really great read. I was sad when it was over. Wonderful first hand accounts of the men who went deep and who are still discovering the biggest and last frontier on our planet.

Last of the Blue Water Hunters 4 out of 5 stars.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a fast easy read, however it didn't fail to stimulate my immagination throughout it. The author jumps around a bit to past stories of spearfishing elsewhere, but they are filled with some unbelievable events. I am a spearfisherman myself and this was my first Carlos Eyles book. I was hoping it would have some more technical information, but nonetheless I was very happy reading it. I am going to read more of his books in which I'm sure I will find more of this information along with more exciting stories. Spearfisherman or not, if you are in love with the sea like I am and appreciate all it has to offer the mind, body and soul, you will also appreciate this book. Carlos is a man of the sea and he will make you want to experience it for yourself.

Editorial Review:

An extraordinary account of the author's apprenticeship with free-diving pioneers who stalk powerful game fish.

How a showman/researcher/storyteller/philosopher defined modern diving 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

What can be said about Jacques Cousteau and his groundbreaking book that hasn't been said a thousand times? He is undoubtedly the defining figure of modern scuba diving, his books, films, and documentaries known to millions or billions. Even the name of his ship, the Calypso, is known the world over. It's a small volume, this book, just 160 pages, yet it's absolutely mandatory reading for anyone interested in what Cousteau termed "the silent world" under the surface of the water that covers 71% of our planet. The Silent World is the bible of modern scuba diving.

Jacques Cousteau himself died in 1997 at the age of 87, but the legacy of his pioneering work with diving and diving physiology lives on. It is all well documented and disseminated worldwide, thanks to this French explorer's unique combination of instinctive understanding of the world under the surface and his equally unique knack of spellbinding the world with his words and images. A total master of public relations and getting the word out, Cousteau managed to grab attention and media coverage wherever he went. Critics went so far as suggesting his media talents exceeded his actual contributions to understanding the seas.

At first it's hard to figure out why this slim volume became such a success. It's not a textbook, it doesn't cover the history of diving or even much of Cousteau's own research, and it's not an adventure book. Though Cousteau was French, he wrote The Silent World in English as he had attended American schools in his youth, widely traveled the US, and, of course, extensively lectured in his enchanting French-accented English. Yet, The Silent World clearly reveals its author's non-English origin and decidedly "non-English" thinking. The writing, while precise, often suggests that Cousteau frequently described a word or concept that existed in his native French, but did not directly translate into English. As a result, the writing at times seems a bit flowery and, well, foreign, and you need to read a sentence or paragraph two or three times to figure out what it actually means. Cousteau's liberal use of metaphors, artistic nuances, poetic concepts and words that have since fallen out of currrent language only serve to make The Silent World even more unusual of a literary treat.

Anyone looking for technical explanations, precise history, a logical flow of events, or anything one might expect from a world-famous documentary maker and researcher will not find it in this book. The Silent World is a totally unique, very compressed tale flowing from Cousteau's mind. Read half a chapter and you know the man; he's a unique combination of inspired philosophical observer and gifted researcher with uncanny intuition. While others conducted their research methodically and ploddingly, Cousteau always just seemed to know what to expect, how to behave, and what to seek and avoid to make it all seem easy. He and his close associates and friends Phillipe Tailliez and Frederic Dumas used their "aqualung" to experient liberally in sort of a "Hmmm.... this is probably what will happen, let's go check it out!" approach.

Using this, Cousteau describes the difference between "helmet divers" and the newly liberated users of their "aqualung" -- what we now know as air tanks and regulators. The book casually touches on all the principles of diving physics and physiology, the stuff we learn in our PADI and NAUI classes. He describes sea life, how it reacts, where it lives, how it behaves, and what is dangerous and what is not. They see just how deep they can go. They check how colors change. What nitrogen does and why we need recompression chambers. He offers his views on treasure hunting (not worth it; if you find real treasure authorities and hordes of lawyers will soon apprehend it). He reports on atrocities he witnessed underwater, like the needless destruction of corals and cruel killing of fish. He debunks myths of sea monsters, seeks answers to geological phenomena such as the Fountain of Vaucluse near Avignon, one that almost cost him and Dumas their lives in a pioneering effort at extreme cave diving. He describes what fish do and how they react. And sea mammals and other sea critters. Sharks remain an enigma to Cousteau as his conclusion is that you simply cannot understand or predict them.

So The Silent World relates, in 14 fascinating self-contained chapters, pretty much everything we know about diving today, 60 years after Cousteau began researching as a "manfish," all the principles we know, and it's all neatly and attractively presented in tales that always mix research with adventure. Cousteau never preaches or lectures. He just explores, pushes, interprets, and reports. Maybe Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau was a showman as much as a researcher. If so, good for him as otherwise we may never have had the opportunity to learn from him and enjoy his remarkable insights. -- C. H. Blickenstorfer, scubadiverinfo.com

Editorial Review:

Before becoming the man who introduced us to the wonders of the sea through his beloved television series, Jacques Cousteau was better known as an engineer and the inventor of scuba. He chronicled his early days of underwater adventure in The Silent World—a memoir that was an instant, international bestseller upon its publication in 1954. Now, National Geographic presents a 50th anniversary edition of this remarkable book, allowing readers to once again travel under the sea with Cousteau during the turbulent days of World War II.

Pive Like A Pro 1 out of 5 stars.

Good information but save yourself the money and re-read your diving manual. Virtualy all the same information is in there. The book also suffers from poor editing. It's not a bad book just redundant if you have a PADI, NAUI, SSI, or other openwater divers manual.

Editorial Review:

Considering all there is to learn, and all the skills to be mastered, completing a basic scuba course in any format is an accomplishment of which any certified diver should be proud. However, now matter how good a diver you become, it seems there is always some skill, technique or procedure that can be improved.

The information included in the pages of this book can help new divers climb the steep learning curve we all must negotiate at the beginning of our diving careers. Even highly experienced divers may learn or relearn a tidbit of information they never knew or happened to forget. A Good Guide for the Keys 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book is very informative, with good pictures and descriptions of the most popular dive spots in the area of the Florida Keys

informative 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book, and I take it along every time I go diving in the Keys (about once or twice a month). All of the popular dive sites are featured in this book, and there are a lot of pictures that truly represent the diving in the area. I have found the information to be highly accurate when describing the sites, though somewhat vague at times. This book is small in size, so I can even zip it up inside my log book so it stay dry.

Editorial Review:

From wrecks to reefs, the Florida Keys offer a treasure trove of diving opportunities, for advanced divers and novices alike. This book describes the best dives in the region, from Biscayne Bay to the Dry Tortugas.

In This Guide:

Detailed dive information to 64 sites.
Full-color photos throughout.
Maps of dive regions.

Editorial Review:

At 11:10 p.m. on July 25, 1956, the luxurious Italian ocean liner Andrea Doria collided with the Stockholm forty-five miles south of Nantucket. Half a century later, the wreck of the Andrea Doria is still claiming lives.
Professional and amateur divers the world round consider the Andrea Doria to be the Everest of diving. At 225 feet below the surface, the wreck lies at the very edge of human endurance and accomplishment; ordinary air becomes toxic and the divers who go there suffer nitrogen narcosis or "the rapture of the deep." Symptoms include confusion, lack of coordination, and perhaps most deadly of all, a loss of the ability to make clear decisions. As a result, divers use Trimix, an exotic blend of oxygen, nitrogen, and helium to descend through the strong currents, rusted metal, and twisted wires to the ultimate symbol of deep sea diving accomplishments: china teacups and plates from the wreck of the Andrea Doria. For serious wreck divers, these fragile artifacts are genuine proof of their abilities as divers.
During the summers of 1998 and 1999, three elite divers lost their lives, all on separate dives from the top dive boat out of Montauk, the 65-foot Seeker. Craig Sicola was clearly suffering from "china fever" before he went down. He'd handled teacups brought up by veteran Doria diver Gary Gentile, and the gleam in Craig's eye was unmistakable. Craig dove on June 24, 1998. A few hours later, his body bobbed to the surface. He was carrying a plate.
Joe Haberstroh, the award-winning Newsday reporter, watched events unfold during the summers of 1998 and 1999. In this remarkable and intriguing book he recreates what was the pride of the Italian fleet, how it sank, the dangers of the deep, and the gripping personal stories of the men who live or die for a teacup from its remains.

TERRIFIC GUIDE TO A FASCINATING SPORT 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This is a fine book full of good information on how to safely enjoy diving on shipwrecks. The authors, wreck diving Professor Henry Keatts, world class photographer and Wreck Diver Brian Skerry (National Geographic, People, etc.) are the perfect duo to write such a work.

The book contains many fine pictures and illustrations acompanied by a wonderfully descriptive and informative text. This is a must have for the bookshelf of any aspiring or experienced wreck diver

Editorial Review:

For a comprehensive wreck diving course, Complete Wreck Diving is an excellent companion text. Starting with the types of ships and how wrecks deteriorate, Keatts and Skerry cover a broad range of topics in an organized and progressive manner.

Included are sections on researching and finding wrecks; specialized equipment and configurations; pre-dive preparations; what to look for and expect in a charter boat; diving the wreck with special emphasis on hazards and navigation; what clues to look for to help identify a wreck; artifact recovery and conservation; legal ramification of diving wrecks and removing artifacts; special techniques for photographing wrecks.

Written in an engaging style with ample use of the authors’ first hand experiences, even veteran wreck divers will find much valuable information in Complete Wreck Diving.

Is there a Monster in Lake Erin? 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I thought this book was good for first through third grade.I thought it was a really good book because the Bailey School kids think there is a monster in Lake Erin.I would recommend this book to first threw third grader because it is a short book with very big print. I thought when Eddie saw a tiny fish and thought it was a shark it was very funny. My favorite character was Eddie.Eddie is a redheaded boy who cracks me up.One reason I liked Eddie is that he likes to argue with the teacher.Eddie also hates school and reading.

You'll love this book ! 5 out of 5 stars.

I gave this book five stars because it was a great mystery. It
had a thrill about finding out if their scuba teacher is a lake monster. They eventually find out that she is a monster
but it brings in an adventure and mystery to find out.The book
brings in some beliefs and realistic things about monsters.

Editorial Review:

Attending Camp Lone Wolf, the Bailey School kids encounter strange grown-up counselors, including a director whose hairy appearance makes him seem like a werewolf and a swim teacher who may be the Loch Ness monster.
