A present for my granddaughter 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

After snorkeling in the Caribbean, I felt as if my granddaughter needed this book to help her identify fish, coral, sponges, and other creatures we saw.

Good resource 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Compact, high gloss pages make the book portable and water resistant. The color photographs are mostly good. Some make it hard to know what you are looking at. The b/w drawings of fish shapes in the front is very helpful. I was able to find 90 percent of the fish and invertebrates, but the corals are pretty limited in this book. I think its a good value, just the same

Editorial Review:

This concise, easy-to-use, full color identification guide explores the extraordinary array of sea life found throughout the reefs of Florida, northern gulf of Mexico, Central America, Caribbean Islands, Windward Islands, Leeward Islands, Netherlands Antilles, and Bermuda. Reef Fishes, Corals and Invertebrates of the Caribbean will prove to be an invaluable resource to divers, snorkelers, and underwater photographers who visit this beautiful dive destination.

Great adventure, gripping drama. A real page-turner. 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

To be honest, I was a fan of Mr. Volgenau when he was a writer for the Detroit Free Press, but this book is really something else entirely. A little bit of fascinating history, lots of drama and a compelling human story as well. I had a hard time putting it down. Definitely recommended for those interested in diving, as well as fans of the maritime history of the Great Lakes. Mr. Volgenau's background as a journalist really shines in this brutally honest look at the dangerous world of deep diving and the people who have the sauce to do it. Loved it.

Awesome 5 out of 5 stars.

The inside story on how most of the ships in the Great Lakes were found and are still being found.

Engrossing book 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This engrossing book is an excellent tale of the Great Lakes, shipwreck hunting, and underwater diving. I personally know, or thought I knew, the main diver profiled, Danny Fader and his wife, Jeanne. Volgenau paints a very thorough, honest portrayal of both. They are two of the most honest, caring, endearing individuals one could ever meet. If there is any fault with the book, it is that the author tends to get too bogged down with the technical details of shipwreck hunting. There is such a thing as too much detail.

Editorial Review:

Journey with scuba instructor Michael Zinsley as he dives his way through 16 countries, rubbing shoulders with the locals and mixing underwater adventure with after-hours escapades.

The Rapture of the Deep is fast paced and rich in content, consisting of humorous anecdotes, insightful histories, underwater descriptions, and terrifying close calls. The diving stories relate events seen once in a thousand dives. Native cultures are revealed with an awareness that only someone who has lived in those lands can describe. The book's lighter side is the combination of underwater adventure mixed with after-hours escapades (imagine Cousteau extending his documentaries to include closing time in the local bars). The descriptions of coral reef life are written in a way that non-diving readers will be as intrigued as the experts.

Featuring stories from:
Antigua, Australia, Bermuda, Bonaire, California, Fiji, Guam, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Palau, Philippines, Ponape, Saint Lucia, Solomon Islands, Thailand, Tonga, Truk, U.S. Virgin Islands, Vanuatu, Western Samoa, and Yap. Includes over 20 color photos and maps.

Essential resource 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

If you're planning a bareboat charter in the British Virgin Islands and would like to head off to dive sites on your own then this is the book you need. The book contains dive site locations, mooring locations, skill requirements, weather considerations, site layouts, suggested underwater routes, and dive descriptions. We arrived in the Virgin Islands with a bag of dive books and this is the one that we used over and over again!

Best available dive guide to the BVI, IMO. 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

We're divers who have visited BVI several times, and we think Jim Scheiner's bok is the best guide available for diving the islands. - Jim and his wife Odile are accomplished videographers and photographers with a shop at Baskin in the Sun's location in the Prospect Reef resort in Tortola, and they have extensive knowledge of the area- they're passing some of this knowledge on to visiting divers. - My only wish is they'd expand the book in its next edition, as there are so many interesting BVI dives sites!

Editorial Review:

This guide, the newest and most complete to the British Virgin Islands, covers over 50 dive sites in detail. All the major islands are represented – Virgin Gorda, Tortola, Anegada, Salt, Cooper, etc. Included are special sections on beach diving, shipwrecks (such as the famous Rhone), remote dive sites for those who charter their own boats, topside attractions as well as maps of individual dive sites locating major points of interest. The area history as well as places to stay and dine are also included.

Decent collection, not all stories fantastic 4 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I recently read this collection of stories while on a nice tropical vacation where I did a couple of dives - so was in the mood. Below, I have broken down some of the positives and negatives that I took away from this collection:

The positives: This is without a doubt a comprehensive collection of writings - in terms of the time period covered and styles of writing (humor, poetry, etc). I thought that some of the stories were really great - couldn't help but laugh at Dave Barry's description of diving. I found a few of the older pieces very interesting due to the historic perspective / context.

The negatives: Any time you take on a project to complile a collection this large across different writing styles, it should be a given that all pieces are not going to appeal to all readers. About 25% of the stories simply did not appeal to me.

Secondly, there also seemed to be a recurring "What my first dive was like" or "What it feels like when you are down there" theme. I also found this a bit tiresome after awhile. As a diver, unending explanations of how clear and blue water is, the sense of weightlessness, etc got to be a bit much. Almost drove me to the best example I could think of - a bottle of Bombay Gin.

Closing: A large enough body of work that I think that every reader will find some of the stories very worthy reading. Light enough for a good vacation or bedtime read. Worthy enough purchase - I think a good gift type of purchase for that diver's christmas fin.

Editorial Review:

More than 35 passages from novelists, journalists, poets, playwrights, essayists, and scientists detail an intertwined passion for diving and the written word in this collection. From Robert Stone's portrayal of a diver who faces the terrorizing prospect of his air running out to Clare Booth Luce's search for the treasures of the underwater realm, every passage reveals a perspective of the world that only divers have known. Humor columnist Dave Barry battles a lobster and explains why staying on the ocean's surface is like "going to the circus and staring at the outside of a tent." From Rangiroa to the Red Sea, from deep within caverns to the eerie light under ice, from the lethal silliness of nitrogen narcosis to the elation of soaring over unfathomable depths, every selection, like every dive, is a unique experience.

Extremely informative and packed with lots of information in an easy to digest format. As a begining spearfisherman I found this book extremely helpfull. It does not go into long stories to explain information, but just gives it to you upfront.

New to Spearfishing, Read this book... 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book was very informative to the new spearfisher person. I learned alot about When , Where, And How to spearfish. After reading this book, I went out on my first trip. I ended up spearing a 5 pound calico bass off of Catalina Island.

OK but not great 2 out of 5 stars.

If you are going to spend the money on a book regarding spearfishing, spend the extra money for "Bluewater Hunting and Freediving" by Terry Maas. It has much more info that this book.

This book is elementary at best.

Editorial Review:

Which would you rather do — go to a supermarket and buy a tasteless fish, or go diving and catch your own fresh fish? Written for the novice who wants to get started in underwater hunting, this book contains basic information on choosing the right gear and deciding where to hunt. Also includes information on secret techniques, fish species, accessories, and conservation.

I couldn't put it down!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is probably one of the most enjoyable books I have read in the last five years. The author and his cohorts are definitely brave, almost certainly missing a few screws and possibly suicidal, but they enjoy what they are doing so much that after a while the insanity of it all doesn't seem to matter. Stories about divers diving with football helmets so they don't get knocked out on the steel beams of the oil rig and the stalking of sharks (!!) in the opaque murk at the bottom of the sea floor would seem farcical or just stupid coming from almost anyone else, but when Fontova writes it is riveting, believable and also hilarious.

Fontova is often brutally honest about the risks that the rig-divers take. While his writing clearly expresses the enjoyment and thrill of this type of spear fishing, he does not try to glorify it or to imply that it is safe or easy or simple, because it is none of those things.

One of the best things about this book is also one of the most unexpected: it's not just about hunting, it's about everything else too. In between the stories about the dives, Fontova talks about south Louisiana culture, the workings and modification of spear guns, the theory of operation behind scuba gear, the rules for how deep and how long it is considered safe to dive (after which he talks about how the rig divers exceed all limits of safety or even common sense on their dives), the dynamics of the mixing of the Mississippi River water with the Gulf of Mexico water, a brief history of oil rigs, basic fish anatomy and the types and temperament of fish seen around the rigs, why Jacques Cousteau once gave a talk at a local dive shop, a first-person perspective on Che Guevera, and dozens of other things besides.

This is really an excellent book that I have recommended and will continue to recommend to family and friends. The only people who probably won't like it are anti-hunting activists and those that feel Prohibition should never have been repealed. Aside from them, it has something for everyone.
