Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Diving Cozumel by diving expert and underwater photographer Steve Rosenberg is a gorgeous, descriptive, and illustrated tour of the drift driving seen in the exceptionally clear waters of the Mexican island of Cozumel. Covering 33 of the best shore and boat dive sites in intricate detail, along with basic information on where to stay, dine, and shop, and a chapter devoted to the Mayan ruins on the nearby Yucatan Peninsula, Diving Cozumel is a handy and practical guide. The stunning color photographs also allow armchair travelers a virtual tour of some of the most amazing seascapes to be found.

Informed Diver 4 out of 5 stars.

This series is a must for the touring diver and the Cozumel guide gets you past the language barrier by providing reef descriptions and drawings as well as narrative on the reef and marine life. After three dive trips to Cozumel, I still use my guide to refresh my recollections both before and after the dive.
Now if we could only get the publisher to print this on logbook size pages.

Editorial Review:

On October 8, 2001, the 120-foot luxury live-aboard dive yachts Wave Dancer and Aggressor III, both carrying members of the Richmond Dive Club, were secured to a concrete dock in southern Belize when Hurricane Iris struck. The last boat to slip into the harbor for safety, the Wave Dancer, stuck out halfway into the channel, unable to find more room at the crowded dock. The category four hurricane, with winds of 140 mph and a storm surge of fourteen feet, ripped the Wave Dancer from its cleats, tossing it like a toy across the lagoon. When the storm subsided an hour later, 20 of the boat’s 28 occupants were dead. The investigation into the tragedy — the worst in the history of recreational diving — revealed that the boat’s owner and captain had ignored storm warnings and needlessly endangered the lives of their passengers and crew.

In a vivid indictment of maritime irresponsibility, author Joe Burnworth — a passenger on the Aggressor III — dramatically recounts the events leading up to the Wave Dancer's capsizing, the rescue and recovery attempts, and the devastating aftermath.

Editorial Review:

his completely revised Fourth Edition of the NOAA Diving Manual, Diving for Science and Technology, is one of the most detailed diving reference books available and is a valuable resource for all who are interested in a complete encyclopedia of diving technology, equipment, techniques, and procedures.

More than 100 authors and reviewers, selected from a diverse spectrum of experts in recreational scuba diving, commercial, military, scientific and research diving, combined their expertise to address the complex issues involved in today's diving.

This new edition contains twenty-one chapters on all aspects of diving: techniques to improve the methodology of underwater scientific research, new gear, operational techniques and details to assist the diver in diving safely. In addition, there are ten appendices, including a glossary, references, and a detailed index. The technologies of rebreathers and mixed gas diving, including nitrox and oxygen are included; diving physics, physiology, decompression and diving medicine have been updated to reflect the recent development in the diving industry. The never-before-published NOAA Nitrox Tables and Nitrox Diving Procedures allow deeper and/or longer bottom times to increase diver efficiency when using nitrox, without affecting safety or increasing decompression time. The most current and up-to-date U.S. Navy Dive Tables are also included. The NOAA Diving Manual is a valuable resource all serious divers must have!

Good for a beginner 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book based on reviews. I was looking for basic information on snorkeling, which this book delivers. It is well written and comprehensive. Over all, a great buy.

Great book for beginner and advanced snorkelers too! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is a great help to those of us who love to snorkel. It tells you about the equipment and accessories needed, and how to take care of it. It also discusses the techniques, where to go snorkeling, the marine life and a lot more. It is a great book that was recommended to me by my diving instructor. Highly informative and very well-written.

Editorial Review:

A solid introduction to snorkeling fun. Mask, fins, and snorkel are the three most basic items of diving equipment that can be used whether you choose to remain on the surface to make your underwater discoveries, or whether you plan to plunge into the depths. You can use the same gear no matter where your diving adventures take you. Using snorkeling gear, you can swim with the dolphins, explore sunken ships, or capture your own lobsters for dinner.

Lots of detailed info & resources. Sloppy editing. 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book is Pre -tsunami. & Pre-enviromental-ban for Sipadan

CONS:
1) This edition is basically the same as the 2nd edition. If you have #2 then you don't really need #3. Just call ahead and make sure the LDS info is correct.

2) Although some of the information may have been updated since the 2nd edition, sloppy editing ruins the book. Maps are not on the page indexed and are not on the page referred to in the paragraph. You'd really expect better editing and not just #2 regurgitated with add-on info.

3) Many of the contributors also have their own Dive Guide/Book published, so you may find some duplicate info.

4) Doesn't list all major dive shops in the area, (but it comes pretty close). Doesn't list dive shops on the smaller islands (not even reputable ones).

5) Publishing company extremely rude (Periplus Singapore) and unhelpful to the public when called at the number listed.

PROS:
1) Maps of the entire region are very helpful especially if you want to be sure whether you are diving island 3 or island 4a. & your dive guide doesn't know - unfortunately happens more than you think since everyone wants to do their divemaster/instructor training course here. Just show the boat captain the map and he'll tell you.

2) This book packs a lot of detailed info on each and every area and dive site. All you need is a Guide that knows where the fish are and how to get back to the boat.

3) This book often contains more pertinent and detailed info than many "single area" books out there.

4) All the contributors are highly respected and very well-known in their own areas and beyond. Most are regular contributors to dive magazines and have their own guides published. Some still take groups out despite owning their own dive shop, travel agency, internet cafe, Tshirt stand, satay and fruit juice stall.

5) Good quality photos and paper.

6) Nice map of the region inside the front cover.

Overall one of the better dive books out there. You will find this one really helpful for:
*Planning dive trips in S.E. Asia
*Knowing where you are
*What to look out for at a site/area
*Alternative dive resources for S.E. Asia (Lists of websites diving & otherwise).

It says Survival Guide - It really is... 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

It does say on the cover that it is the survival guide - it really is. I read quite a few rescue diver manuals, but this completes it. From the planning to the equipment to the environment to the first aid, everything is technically covered. There are some sections that provide some tips on diving skills, and dive professionals should pay attentions to them as those little things can save a lot of your time and your students' in the class while you actually are passing important dive safety tips down to them.

Some sections, especially rescue technique sections, were visually explained so that a reader can visualize the body positions also.

Orr's Safety Stop section was added touch to the book as it is based on the real story and experience. Some of them made me think of what I would do if I were in his position so that a rescue would be conducted safely.

As certified dive equipment repair technician, I seriously appreciated Equipment section of the book. It is easy to forget that we carry life-support equipment while having fun underwater, and this book not only took it seriously but pointed out the basic facts that are easily forgotten by divers in professional manner.

Overall, I'd recommend this book to all divers as this is easy to read comparing to other dive safety books out there that make my head scratch, but I'd highly recommend to all rescue-level divers that want to extend their knowledge in overall dive safety, and instructors should definitely use this book as a reference and addition to your dive safety related courses and encourage your students to obtain a copy. They say that the knowledge is a power, but it really is.

A very comprehensive guide to the Virgin Islands 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I have been meaning to review this book for some time as it is one of the most thumbed books on our book shelf. My wife and I run a charter yacht in the Virgin Islands and many of our guests are keen divers. We bought The Complete Diving Guide for our own use initially but it has since become part of the yacht's library as our guests find it so useful and enjoyable to read. (as our copy is getting rather worn I'm pleased to say that many of them buy their own copy after having seen ours). It is rare to find a book that is so comprehensive and which presents a vast amount of information in such a readable manner. In particular we find the island and dive site maps useful along with the descriptions of the dives and the underwater route maps. I can direct our guests at the tyupe of dive that I think they would enjoy and they can read about it beforehand. They can also choose the dive store they would like to use. I'd thoroughly recommend it to anyone planning to do some diving in the Virgin Islands (it even covers the Spanish Virgin Islands).

Editorial Review:

The Complete Diving Guides to scuba diving in the Eastern Caribbean, including descriptions of ALL dive sites, dive stores and operators. Island maps show the location of dive sites and stores. Dive sites are illustrated by underwater maps and photographs.

Volume 3 gives you everything you ever need to know about scuba diving on these fantastic Caribbean islands:Puerto Rico (including Mona, Desecheo, Vieques and Culebra), US Virgin Islands (St Thomas, St John and St Croix) and the British Virgin Islands (including Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost van Dyke, Salt Island and HMS Rhone, Cooper Island, Peter Island and Norman Island)
