LONGBOARD MAGAZINE Review, Jan/Feb..2000 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Steven Curry's second book of poems is a look into the dreamy reality of island life and the wonderous feelings that living in a surfer's paradise can inspire.

Curry's poetry keeps it soothing tone, vibrant imagery and active language constant throughout this entire collection of unrhymed verse, moving between the heavenly landscapes of Hawaii and its relaxed, underwater world. The short translations of thirteenth century poet/philosopher Rumi and unique seascapes of Wayne Levin make Dancing The Waves And Other Poems a complete product.

Standout excerpts are; "Bodysurfing Makapu'u," comparing the "bone-jarring" power of a shorebreak pounder against the "Soft curl" of the same ride; "Small-Day Wave-Play," with its calm, "Crystalline" images; the respectful, introspective goodby, "Elegy (Sea Burial); "Na Kupuna O Ke Kai," an homage to senior longboarders and their favorite morning ritual; the celebration of volcanic life in "Lava Variations"; and "Still Point In Motion," ending the assembladge with a soulful breakdown of surfing.

Dancing The Waves And Other Poems is an original opus, possibly the only collection of surf-flavored poems in print, with phraseology demanding a second and third reaading.

Published by Anoai Press, Honolulu, Hawaii.

Editorial Review:

Perhaps the only poetry book about surfing in print. A poet surfer traslates translates the ocean's embrace in graceful meditative poetry counterposed with the joyful languge of mystic Rumi. Book includes the stunning surf and water photographys by the artist photographer Wayne Levin.

A must get if you are in any way involved in surfboard ding repair, casual or otherwise.

Editorial Review:

An excellent book that guides you through all stages of ding repair. Everything is broken down into step by step format, pages of detailed illustrations. You get the 'Answers to All' for less than the cost of having just one small ding repaired professionally.

A Neat Photographic History of Early Mainland Surfing! 5 out of 5 stars.

Wow! Doc Ball's waterborne photography is years ahead of it's time. I'm blown away every time I look at this book and check out surfers with no wetsuits and leashes, awesome early boards, and the lack of surf-traffic!

What a disappointment! 2 out of 5 stars.

This book was on my WishList for over a year, and then it took 2 months to arrive after ordering it. What a disappointment after all that time!

The book consists of a bunch of photos, some of which are pretty cool, but most of which are mediocre at best. There is no text, except for a one-page introduction, and another one-page tribute to George Freeth. Comments that accompany each photo are superficial, repetetive, and often just plain dorky. After 35 years of surfing California myself, and reading all the magazines, books, etc. over those years, this was a big letdown. I expected a lot more. ... the thing is way over-priced, unless you happen to big a big Doc Ball fan and/or are one of the old-timers in the photos. If not, save your dough.

Pure Pioneer Spirit 5 out of 5 stars.

Doc's 1946 book is a fantastic collection of pre WW II surfing photographs. If one carefully studies the names and places, you will find the book is a priceless historical document. The photo titles are humorous and innocent which also reflects the period in which they were taken. Any student of surf history and/or surfing photography should by all means purchase this book. Doc not only invented and pioneered his camera's waterhousings, but also the beginnings of the surf photographer's eye. He was a good friend of Tom Blake's and many of the other early California surfers. Dr. John Heath Ball, DDS. will be remembered not only as the father of surf photography, but as a positive and innovative force in the early history of California surfing.

a gem 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Is the purpose of life the end result or is it enjoying the journey? Win Straube will entice readers to come to this question on their own with his book "Enjoying the Ride." Readers will feel as though they have made a dear friend or perhaps been introduced to a distant, yet friendly relative.

Beginning with the roots of his life and ending the book on tips to enrich your own, Straube tells the tale of who he is, who his family is, what the world is like from his perspective, and so much more. With vivid detail of the bombing days of Germany, the massive struggles afterward, his coming to America where the Statue of Liberty welcomes the tired and poor, building a business in Canada, and building a life with his wife Hildegard, Straube passes on the stories that we all should learn from. To have this history is an intense thing, to share it with the world is his legacy, and he has done it well.

Written in such a friendly tone, the book is an ease to read. Pages will be turned in effort to learn more of first hand history, romance, life lessons, and personal thoughts. Readers will become immersed in the mind of a man who is the portrait of the American Dream. I've come away admiring Win Straube and I am sure countless others will too.

This well written autobiography is a gem. Win Straube shares his life, and even his current pleasure in Hawaiian music with the CD that comes with the book. Who could ask for more from any author?

A must have for any surfer visiting New Zealand 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a compact but detailed guide to surfing in New Zealand. It contains a list of 300+ surfing locations with comments, plus tips for the visitor (local terms, food, accommodation, transport etc.). It's the only recent book of this type as far as I'm aware. Unfortunately the author Wayne died a while back surfing (Bali?) , but his legacy lives on. The publisher appears to have gone out of business so it may be difficult to get copies.
