Editorial Review:

This book puts an end to the drudgery of merely counting laps by showing you how to create your own individual fitness program--and have fun doing it! Learn how to:
  • Determine your own fitness level
  • Choose an appropriate training program and build upon that program with a variety of innovative workouts
  • Use a timing clock and interval training to increase your speed and endurance
  • Use various training equipment, such as kick boards, hand paddles, and swimming fins to strengthen stroke technique
  • Improve your cardiovascular fitness, muscle tone, and flexibility
Included for quick reference are tips for streamlining strokes, checklists for proper stroke execution, and a helpful glossary of training terms as well as a section on the joys and challenges of open water swimming. "I am constantly looking for new approaches which will do at least one of the following, and possibly all three:
  1. give me a change from normal routine
  2. make me a faster swimmer
  3. challenge me to work harder
The Fit Swimmer addresses all these in an informative and entertaining way, making this book a valuable resource for all swimmers." -- James E. Editorial Review:

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Megan Quann Jendrick and her husband and personal trainer offer a complete training regimen -- including a diet program -- that will enable everyone to achieve the body of their dreams through swimming.

Elite-level swimmers share a common trait -- their toned, shapely bodies. Get Wet, Get Fit shows how anyone, regardless of age or size, can use swimming to get into the best condition of their lives. The Jendricks offer detailed instructions along with underwater photographs that illustrate how to achieve proper form and technique for the four basic strokes -- backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle.

But unlike the average training manual or how-to book, Get Wet, Get Fit also provides:

  • Training regimens for everyone from beginners to Olympic-level competitors, including dynamic drills for strengthening, fat loss, and endurance
  • Physique-building workout routines (with and without weights) for dry land
  • A complete diet plan, including tempting recipes and menus (swimmers need carbohydrates, so this is a diet to love)
  • Tips from world-class swimmers

Low impact and gentle on the joints, swimming is one of the most enjoyable and exhilarating ways to exercise, but Get Wet, Get Fit shows how it can also be one of the most effective ways to get your body into top shape.

Cherie is one of the most experienced and winning triathletes in the sport today, and holds several world records (www.cheriegruenfeld.com). She obviously knows what it takes, and she conveys that information eloquently in her new book. Her years of training, coaching, and racing world-wide have given her a wealth of experience and knowledge that is invaluable to anyone contemplating becoming an amature or professional triathlete, spectator or support crew member.

BECOME AN IRONMAN 5 out of 5 stars.

Wonderful insight from a gracious, older and experienced female Ironman athlete!
I found Cherie's book to be inspirational and full of useful advice... great information or just tidbits that reinforce what I already know about training for this tough event. For NEW or SEASONED triathletes, it is a nice reminder of how to go about IM training, especially when one gets a little off track!
As a seasoned, female IM athlete myself, I am often looked to for coaching advice, and this book is one that I highly recommend! An easy
read, and a book that you can pick up again and again, reading just a paragraph or two (like when you can barely keep your eyes open after a long hard day of training), and always be inspired to keep going when it gets tough! Thank you, Cherie!

Editorial Review:

Become an Ironman is a treasure trove of deeply insightful training and racing wisdom. Its purpose is to provide the reader with a rich collection of insider tips, techniques and expertise. Written in a straightforward, easily readable style, Become an Ironman is designed to deliver the most information in the fewest words possible. This guide is targeted at both shorter distance athletes and those who have already participated in an Ironman and want to improve their performance.

Editorial Review:

Despite an astonishing, drum-thumping opening ceremony that clearly announced China's ascendance as a 21st-century superpower, it was a tall, gangly kid from Baltimore who stole the spotlight, and in eight shining, golden moments, made us all proud to be Americans. Like Jesse Owens before him, Michael Phelps showed the rest of the world how great America can be, and shined the brightest when it mattered most. This book chronicles the remarkable story of Michael Phelps, the greatest Olympic athlete in history, as told by the writers, editors, and photographers of USA Today.

A beautiful book 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Learn to Swim: Step-by-Step Water Confidence and Safety Skills for Babies and Young Children is a beautiful book about teaching kids to swim. It has great pictures, step by step instructions, and games and techniques for teaching your children how to swim. I especially liked the fact that it very clearly stated what children can learn at each stage. So Caleb is now old enough to be learning how to hold his breath. (He's 11 months old.) They not only said he can learn how to hold his breath, but explained how to teach him and what to watch for to see if he's comfortable with it or we need to take some more time. I now have a very clear guide of what I can work on with him and what I might want to wait a bit on.

Editorial Review:

Learn to Swim guides parents of babies and children from ages 6 months to 4 years, through progressive, baby-friendly lessons that not only build confidence and help control sleeping problems and tantrums, but are proven to stimulate intelligence and concentration, increase emotional and physical development, and boost immunities.

Editorial Review:

Each year more than ten million Americans strap on scuba gear and explore the ocean's floor, inspired by the promise of adventure and the lure of the deep. Neutral Buoyancy is an in-depth look at humanity's age-old fascination with the wonders of the world beneath the waves and the burgeoning recreational sport of diving. Journalist and diver Tim Ecott takes you on a guided tour of the history of undersea exploration and the emergence of diving culture, from the sponge divers whom Aristotle witnessed using iron cauldrons to hold air underwater in the fourth century B.C., to the development of the first diving bell in the sixteenth century A.D., to the increasingly sophisticated scuba systems of today. Along the way, Ecott intersperses the stories of his own thrilling adventures. His love for diving has taken him from the waters of the South Pacific to the remote islands of the Seychelles, from explorations in the clear, flowing tides of Sardinia to a near-death experience in the cold, gray depths of the English Channel. Filled with engaging stories of humanity's conquest of the undersea world -- and heartpounding action that will leave you breathless -- Neutral Buoyancy is a compelling blend of history and adventure, an unforgettable portrait of the world of undersea diving.

In California, a team of talented young men begin pursuing the most elusive dream in sports, the Olympic Games. The pressure steadily increases as two best friends (a mentor and his protégé) reach the top of the world rankings and unexpectedly find themselves direct competitors. Their teammates include an emerging star methodically plotting to retrace his father’s path to Olympic glory, as well as a super-extraordinary athlete desperate to walk away from it all. Led by one of the most passionate coaches in sports, a brilliant and explosive strategist on a personal quest for redemption, this team of dark horses and Olympic favorites works through escalating rivalries, joyous triumphs, and heartbreaking setbacks.

Author P. H. Mullen chronicles their journey to the 2000 Olympic Games and presents one of the most powerful and moving sports books ever written. Boldly sweeping in literary power and pace, this startling book will permanently change how you view the Olympic athlete.
It is a fascinating world of suspense and emotion where human desire for excellence rules over all, and where there are no second chances for glory. But above all, Gold in the Water is a triumph of the human spirit.
