Editorial Review:

Use the world’s best training system from the world’s top swim coach to become a stronger swimmer in freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, and individual medley.

Bill Sweetenham is the coaching force behind Australia’s rise to international swimming acclaim. Now the national performance director of British Swimming, Sweetenham and coach John Atkinson detail their complete system of proven workouts, sets, and programs to improve stroke technique and race performance.

Championship Swim Training starts with benchmark test sets to evaluate ability, find specific training zones, and plot future training targets. Drill progressions and checklists for every stroke can be applied to individual swimmers or entire squads for technique enhancement.

The next section explains proper program planning for juniors through master swimmers and provides sample training sets for all levels of swimmers. The final chapters provide tapering tips, racing strategies, and dryland conditioning recommendations to take the guesswork out of constructing the perfect year-round program.

not so good 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

this book is only good if you started teaching your baby to swim when he was a newborn and it doesn't give many different choices. had some helpful tips, but overall I think I'll buy another one. my recommendation...skip it

Skip this impractical book and get something else 1 out of 5 stars.

The program is tedious and impractical. Tells you that you are better off with a Japanese tub to practice in, and requires lot of practice from you and baby on daily basis. There are other fun and simple programs out there that would teach your baby to swim, float, turn and breathe out of water and this is definitely not the one with a simple solution.

important to have 4 out of 5 stars.

first heard about it actually on YOUTUBE.
Different parents posted their videos of their baby infants swimming, or turning themselves over floating. It was so touching and amazing to see. So many of the parents said they learned from Douglas Domans book. Having a pool and canals all over the area where I live, it is sooo important for kids to learn swimming as early as possible.
Book is nice with tips on fun bonding exercises to do with baby starting after birth.

Editorial Review:

Hodding Carter dreamed of being an Olympian as a kid. He worshipped Mark Spitz, swam his heart out, and just missed qualifying for the Olympic trials in swimming as a college senior. Although he didn't qualify for the 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, or 2004 Olympics, he never stopped believing he could make it. And despite past failures and the passage of time, Carter began his quest once more at the age of forty-two.

Maybe he's crazy. But then again, maybe he's onto something. He entered the Masters Championships. He swam three to four miles each day, six days a week. He pumped iron, trained with former Olympians, and consulted with swimming gurus and medical researchers who taught him that the body doesn't have to age. He swam with sharks (inadvertently) in the Virgin Islands, suffered hypothermia in a relay around Manhattan, and put on fifteen pounds of muscle. Amazingly, he discovered that his heartbeat could keep pace with the best of the younger swimmers'. And each day he felt stronger, swam faster, and became more convinced that he wasn't crazy.

This outrageous, courageous chronicle is much more than Carter's race with time to make it to the Olympics. It's the exhilarating story of a man who rebels against middle age the only way he can—by chasing a dream. His article in Outside magazine, on which this book is based, was the winner of a Lowell Thomas award from the Society of American Travel Writers Foundation.

Good for beginners 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book had lots of good starter information. It gave me a good foundation to really start planning for my first triathlon. The training routines were well divided into fitness levels. This is a good starter book to build a knowledge base on.

Disappointing training plans 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The training plans in this book for "fit" (there are two sets of plans for each distance: "fit" vs. "unfit") are way too conservative. I found myself using the Olympic distance plan to train for a Sprint distance triathlon. There is no way following the "fit" Olympic distance plan I could have completed that distance. It's suitable for training for a Sprint however but that's not what is intended by the author.

I also find it annoying that so much of the book is dedicated to these different flavors for both individuals and for teams. It began to feel like me that the author was padding the book to make it longer.

Since most folks (like me) would buy a beginner book for the training plans I cannot recommend this book to a beginner to formulate a plan unless you feel like under-training and slogging through your first event.

Editorial Review:

Triathlon Training Basics contains all the information that new triathletes need in order to successfully complete a sprint or an Olympic distance triathlon. Written by Gale Bernhardt, Triathlete columnist, member of the USA Triathlon 2004 Olympic Team Selection Committee, and certified Elite Level Triathlon and Cycling Coach trainer, the book contains detailed training plans that are tailored to different levels of fitness in each of the swim, bike, and run categories. Strength training and stretching portions are included to illustrate proper form and the last chapter deals with injury prevention and treatment.

This book is a thorough guide for a novice like myself. 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Complete Wreck Diving does a great service to those of us who are looking to dive deeper with each year. Step by step it takes you through preparations for your trip and gives you peace of mind enough to make a safe dive. I strongly suggest reading this before attempting a deep sea wreck dive. Very informative overall! I particularly enjoyed the photographs.

Editorial Review:

There is a wealth of information for both beginning and advanced wreck divers packed into this comprehensive volume. Some of the topics covered are types of ships and how they deteriorate; researching and finding shipwrecks; methods of actually searching for a wreck; specialized equipment and predive preparation; what to look for and expect in a charter boat; diving the wreck with special emphasis on hazards and navigation; clues to use for identifying a wreck; artifact recovery, conservation and legal considerations; special techniques of photographing wrecks. Also includes a section on the contribution wreck diving makes to our understanding of maritime history. Covered in the appendices are lists of research sources in the United States and overseas. Written in an engaging style with ample use of the authors’ first hand experiences.

Editorial Review:

In Breakthrough Swimming, legendary swimming coach and historian Cecil Colwin describes how competitive swimmers of the modern era—such as swimming giants Ian Thorpe and Grant Hackett—apply innovative training methods and stroke techniques to set new standards of performance.

All four strokes as well as starts and turns are presented in thorough detail in Colwin’s easy-to-grasp instructional style. Not only will you gain a greater understanding of competitive swimming through its origins and evolution, but you’ll also learn these skills:

• Improve stroke technique, starts, and turns.

• Develop a better training program and understand the principles of training.

• Apply the latest research in hydrodynamics and the propulsive mechanisms of speed swimming to create ultimate speed through the water.

• Coach the “feel” of the water to help swimmers detect and manipulate the water flow with ever-increasing dexterity.

Internationally acclaimed sport physiologist Dr. David Pyne, recipient of the Australian Sports Medal for his work with that country’s Olympic swimming team, contributed a special chapter to the book. Pyne covers all phases of modern training, from physiological testing and monitoring to race preparation and post competition analysis.

The engaging book also offers an inside look at how the sport has evolved, especially in recent years, with the advent of professional swimming and the growing specter of performance-enhancing drugs. Combining the latest technical innovations with a revealing historical context, Breakthrough Swimming is the definitive work on the past, present, and future of competitive swimming.
