Editorial Review:

I've always had an appreciation for the history of hockey, especially anything to do with goalies and goaltending. Now someone has finally come out with a book about goalie masks and how they came to look like the one I wear in the NHL today. From the kids who love the colorful mask art of today to those who remember when goalies played without masks, generations of hockey fans will enjoy Saving Face." - Martin Brodeur, New Jersey Devils goaltender

"This book is a great idea. It will benefit goalies to look back to the days before the mask and to understand the reasons for it. And it's worthwhile for kids to see the old masks and see the changes that have been made, and to see how the masks were a part of the Canadian game. It's a very enjoyable real" - Ed Giacomin, Hockey Hall of Fame goalie

"The past 50 years have seen the goalie mask evolve from being an object of scorn to being the most individualized and most protective piece of equipment in a goalie's armor. This book does an excellent job of telling that story, in words and visually through great photography!" - Dave Dryden, former NHL goaltender, and pioneering mask designer

"Goalie masks have been an intriguing part of hockey for the past half century. This unique book is full of colorful and informative stories and photographs about the mask, its history and the men who have worn them, past and present." - Dick Irvin, Hockey Night in Canada

Great Book on the Best Type of Skiing 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book. Not too basic and not too advanced for someone wanting to get into the best way to ski-the earn your turns way.

I used to teach alpine touring and ski mountaineering in the army and this would have been a great book to have around as the textbook. We taught all of this and then went in depth on the important items like avalanche safety (avoidance) and rescue. This book gives a beginning or intermediate ski mountaineer a taste and encourages AIARE level one certification (I recommend level two personally...)

I still have my copy of the past standard, Peter Cliff's out of print classic "Ski Mountaineering" (no, I won't be selling it on EBay) and this is an improvement on it.

It is great for learning and a great review for those that think they remember everything. I got some good tips on gear that, damn, I SHOULD have known!!!

Wide variety of stories 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This mini-anthology has a wide range of hockey stories from one written by the American, Pulitzer-winning author William Faulkner (this story was junk, though well written if you like Faulkner) to life on the road as a minor league player hoping to be called up (poignantly and rawly written like the life itself), to a homily to Toe Blake, to a portrait of The Great One (Gretzky) by Peter Gzowski, to how to make your own backyard rink.

The quality of writing is generally very good and virtually every story offers an interesting perspective on the game. Stories are short so you can read one on the subway or before you go to bed at night. All in all, a decent hard cover to have on your bookshelf.

Any true hockey fan will relish this special book 5 out of 5 stars.

Being an avid hockey fan I wasn't too expectant upon reading "short stories" about the great moments in hockey and being surprised by what they had to say. Imagine my delight when I found not only interesting and completely out of the ordinary tales of some of the most memorable moments in hockey, right before my eyes, but stories told that I knew with inside looks that make them seem completely different than any other I've read.

"The Greatest Hockey Stories Ever Told" is a wonderful compilation of stories regarding the greatest game on ice, hockey. With everything from "The Miracle Team" from a perspective you probably have never heard before to "A Portrait of The Great One," Wayne Gretzky, you will find each story with its own form and style, told like no other. With so many authors contributing to the book, there is an infinite amount of perspectives that you probably have never seen before on the game. Hockey greats like Toe Blake, Wayne Gretzky, and the infamous Montreal Canadiens and their years of reign are all topics of conversation in this great book of hockey stories and memories.

The style and content are so unique to any other hockey book I've ever read that I am somewhat speechless as to how to compare it to anything else. Loaded with stories, insider's views, coaches' memories, team moments and so much more, any true hockey fan will relish this special book and all its content. The ability to read a story and put it down to come back to later makes it a great book to simply keep around to get your "hockey fix," especially out of season! So after the Cup Craze is over, pull up a seat and enjoy an inside look at the real life stories of hockey and all of its glorious moments. Even the most well-versed and trivia filled amongst us will find an inside look at this great life on and off the ice in "The Greatest Hockey Stories Ever Told."

Editorial Review:

Finally, hockey's rabid fans have an anthology of their own, a showcase of writing as dynamic and diverse as the fastest sport itself.

As Good As It Gets 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

First of all my 5 and 6 year old started looking at this book and it was hard to get it back from them as they were so charmed by the pictures. They have been playing in the snow and hounding me to help ever since.

Second of All I lived in Nunavut for 9 years and took lessons in igloo building from Inuit elders. I also worked with elders and teachers to create a unit on igloo building for students and teachers. I learned to make a half presentable igloo in this process! I can say with a modicum of expertise that many books on the subject are complete flops but not this one.

This book is the real deal. The pictures are great and the text is as well. A fantastic and charming tutorial for playing in the snow. First rate.

Any collection located in an area that gets winter snow will relish this fun, appealing title! 5 out of 5 stars.

    Editorial Review:

Widely acknowledged as the best hockey book ever written and lauded by Sports Illustrated as one of the Top 10 Sports Books of All Time, The Game is a reflective and thought-provoking look at a life in hockey. Intelligent and insightful, former Montreal Canadiens goalie and former President of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Ken Dryden captures the essence of the sport and what it means to all hockey fans. He gives us vivid and affectionate portraits of the characters — Guy Lafleur, Larry Robinson, Guy Lapointe, Serge Savard, and coach Scotty Bowman among them — that made the Canadiens of the 1970s one of the greatest hockey teams in history. But beyond that, Dryden reflects on life on the road, in the spotlight, and on the ice, offering up a rare inside look at the game of hockey and an incredible personal memoir. This commemorative edition marks the 20th anniversary of The Game's original publication. It includes black and white photography from the Hockey Hall of Fame and a new chapter from the author. Take a journey to the heart and soul of the game with this timeless hockey classic.

Shoots and Scores 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I go back to the six team league. My first hero was Red Sullivan, I remember Andy Bathgate and the first curve bladed stick and Jacques Plante without a mask. Zipay portrays the old days so vividly that I can smell cigar smoke in the 50th Street Garden and taste the Nedicks orange and grilled hot dogs my dad bought me in the mezzanine.
Zipay brings it all to life: from Harry Howell, Worsley, Giacomin, Gilbert, Stemkowski, Messier and Lundquist.
This book now proudly sits beside the autobiography of of Andy Bathgate in my library.
We already knew that Zipay is THE hockey writer in New York. In a year when the other NY papers used wire services to cover the season opener, Zipay was the only writer in Prague covering the game.
This is the Good, the Bad, The Ugly and it is The Best; a must read for anyone who claims to be a hockey fan.

    Editorial Review:

This book is about the players, games, and moments that have made the New York Rangers organization what it is today. Frank Boucher and the first Stanley Cup. Mark Messier's Game 6 miracle. Rod Gilbert. Emile Francis. Mike Richter. Brian Leetch. The stories behind all these famous names come alive on the pages of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: New York Rangers. More than just a tribute to success, this book offers the warts-and-all tales from the insider's viewpoint that real fans want. As they relive these memories, Rangers fans--young and old, bandwagon jumpers, and New York natives--will be reminded why they're proud to support one of the NHL's great franchises.

No Longer a Dummy! 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Hockey For Dummies was incredibly helpful when my son began playing the sport and we ended up getting so hooked that we started attending collegiate as well as professional hockey games. Nothing like a bunch of new hockey moms inquiring, "what is icing?" to which another replies, "it's something you put on a cake."

The book's format was very easy to follow, so no matter what you want to learn (penalties, history, etc.) you will be able to get a no-nonsense answer to your inquiry. Understanding something about the sport makes it much more enjoyable to watch. I was particularly impressed with the guidelines for watching the games in person versus the televised ones.

    Editorial Review:

Like its teammates in the Dummies series, Hockey for Dummies is cleverly organized and clearly focused, geared to both fans and players. It is filled with fun stuff such as lists of the 10 best things about the game, the 10 best players, the 10 best teams, and, given even a novice's inability to mistake hockey for Zen, the 10 best hitters. Hockey for Dummies also contains plenty of good, practical advice: Wayne Gretzky offers a clinic on passing, Mark Messier hosts one on face-offs, Brian Leetch counsels players in clinics on defense, and Ron Hextall teaches goaltending. Authors John Davidson and John Steinbreder explain rules, discuss equipment, and detail strategies. They even give pointers on how best to appreciate the game on television. It seems the only thing missing from Hockey for Dummies is a dental referral for the first time one of your incisors gets in the way of an errant puck.

    Editorial Review:

The story of the Buffalo Sabres is one of perseverance against long odds. Many thought that Buffalo was too small to support an NHL franchise and would have to rely on fans from across the border, but the city quickly proved the naysayers wrong. Supported from the beginning by an enthusiastic homegrown fan base and initially led by gifted management, the expansion team reached the pinnacle of the sport--the Stanley Cup Finals--in only five seasons.

"Then Perreault Said to Rico..." unearths many treasures from the Sabres' early years, colorful stories about the players and games that cemented Buffalo's reputation as a great NHL city. Learn the inside story of how the Knox brothers, Norty and Seymour, convinced the NHL to give Buffalo a shot. Follow the team's first coach and general manager, Punch Imlach, as he built a Stanley Cup contender from scratch. Relive the birth of the famed French Connection--Martin, Perreault, and Robert--and classic contests such as the infamous Fog Game. Look back on triumphs such as Danny Gare's 50-goal seasons and tragedies such as Tim Horton's accidental death during the 1973-74 campaign. Recall the exploits of many other Sabres greats: Jim Schoenfeld, Fred Atkins, Craig Ramsay, Jim Lorentz, even Taro Tsujimoto, the greatest fictional player in NHL history.

The key to this timeless collection of Sabres tales is author Paul Wieland, former longtime public-relations director in Buffalo. Wieland was with the team from the beginning, and his stories ring with authenticity and heart. His insider's view and honest profiles of players, coaches, and other personalities will delight true Sabres fans and bring to life the people who were the franchise's first heroes. "Then Perreault Said to Rico..." is the perfect way to reconnect with the Sabres' early years, which helped cement the team's place in NHL lore and is the next-best thing to a seat behind the glass in the Aud.

You and your buddy start talking about a player, then you look him up...I get one every year. It's fun to leaf through it. I look forward to it's release every summer, and it's a must for any broadcaster who is going to talk about the sport.
