The Hockey Bible 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This sits right in front of me, on the coffee table within reach while watching the NHL Center Ice package on DirecTv. You and your buddy start talking about a player, then you look him up...I get one every year. It's fun to leaf through it. I look forward to it's release every summer, and it's a must for any broadcaster who is going to talk about the sport.

Editorial Review:

Researched and compiled by the National Hockey League, this is the one-and-only official reference on hockey, used by sports media throughout the world, and featuring hundreds of brand-new photos.

Wonderful book! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Do we really need another book about the great dog-sled rescue team racing serum to Nome to save the town from a diphtheria epidemic? Why, yes, actually, we do indeed. This thrilling book recounts not only the canine and human heroes of the rescue team but tells us about the heroes in Nome, e.g., the doctor who had to play god and how he did it. Also, the Balto myth is debunked.

Editorial Review:

In 1925, a deadly diphtheria epidemic swept through icebound Nome, Alaska. The life-saving serum was a thousand miles away, and a blizzard was brewing. Airplanes could not fly in such conditions: only the dogs could do it. Racing against death, twenty dog teams relayed the serum across the Alaskan wilderness as newspapers nationwide headlined the drama, enthralling an entire generation. The heroic dash to Nome inspired the annual Iditarod Dog Sled Race in Alaska and immortalized Balto, the lead dog whose arrival in Nome over a snow-blown trail was an American legend in the making. His bronze statue still stands in New York City's Central Park, in dedication to the "Endurance, Fidelity and Intelligence" of the dogs that saved Nome. This is their story, the greatest dog story never fully told, until now. 2 maps, 48 illustrations.

Editorial Review:

In the world of big-mountain skiing, Trevor Petersen was a legend. Appearing in countless films, magazines and photo shoots, his ponytail flying behind him, he was the very embodiment of the freewheeling spirit of extreme skiing in the 1980s and early ’90s.

Then it all came to an end. On February 26, 1996, while skiing in Chamonix, France – the so-called Death Sport Capital of the World – an avalanche swept Trevor away. His body was found sitting up in the snow as if gazing at the mountains he loved.

Nearly a decade later, Trevor’s fifteen-year-old son, Kye Petersen, a rising star in his own right, traveled to Chamonix to ski the run that took his father’s life and, with the aid of some of the world’s greatest ski mountaineers, to become a member of skiing’s big-mountain tribe.

There to chronicle Kye’s story was William A. Kerig, a filmmaker with a dream of his own – to create a film about the soul of big-mountain skiing and the band of mountaineers who ski the steepest, wildest, most dangerous terrain in the world.

In The Edge of Never, Kerig gives us not only a ripping adventure tale about a young man coming of age but a frank and subtle portrait of the extreme skiers who "live big" in the face of death and risk everything to experience the fullness of life in the mountains.

Go snowboard 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I've never snowboard before. This book tough me how to stand and turn plus it has included DVD with detailed instructions. If I compare it to other books and DVD's I've ordered this product is the best.
My recommendation for beginners.

Really effective book 5 out of 5 stars.

I never snowboard. Read this book. And was able to make link turns in 3 days! Now I ride the lift and make really nice carve turns on the greens. Hopefully, the blues next. My friends are better than me but then I was watching a video of one of them after I read this book and I realized their technique is not as smooth as the books says which means I'll be riding better than him in no time!

*Gives particular attention to off-trail navigation with altimeter and GPS

"So ah . . . where do you think we are?"

While you may never have asked this question, there are thousands of hikers, backcountry skiers and snowshoers, climbers, fishermen, hunters and forest workers who have. Wilderness Navigation is the concise, focused, and affordable answer to that question.

Based on the experience of helping revise the navigation section of the best-selling climbing textbook, Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills, and years of teaching wilderness navigation, the authors have expanded the material in Freedom using the most reliable, dependable, and easy-to-learn methods ever devised.

Wilderness Navigation will answer all your questions on reading maps; buying a compass; using a compass, a clinometer, an altimeter, and a GPS; orientation with map and compass; how to avoid getting lost; and what to do if you get lost. It also covers wilderness routefinding on trails, in the forest, in alpine areas, and on snow and glaciers.

An Amazing Story of Incredible Human Endurance 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Wow! This is one of those real life adventure stories that has you wondering how much more the people can endure before they collapse and die. These guys climbed one of the world's most difficult mountains with old climbing technology. What they lacked in modern equipment, they made up for with strength and fitness. The more I read about mountaineering, the more I agree that it is 75% mental and 25% physical. Being in the best physical condition possible definitely gives you a better opportunity for success on high ground. If you liked this book, I encourage you to read my book "Rocky Mountain Adventure Collection". Best wishes on your adventures in life!

Editorial Review:

In 1950, no mountain higher than 8,000 meters had ever been climbed. Maurice Herzog and other members of the French Alpine Club had resolved to try. Their goal was a 26,493-foot Himalayan peak called Annapurna. But unlike other climbs, which draw on the experience of prior reconnaissance, the routes up Annapurna had never been analyzed before. Herzog and his team had to locate the mountain using sketchy, crude maps, pick out a single, untried route, and go for the summit. Annapurna is the unforgettable account of this dramatic and heroic climb, and of its harrowing aftermath. Although Herzog and his comrade Louis Lachenal reached the mountain's summit, their descent was a nightmare of frostbite, snow blindness, and near death. With grit and courage manifest on every page, Herzog's narrative is one of the great mountain-adventure stories of all time.

Don't RV without it. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a very detailed book that gives a very good sense for the various campgrounds in Alaska. It provides phone numbers for most places, and we were able to call ahead to check availability and if the wash facilities were available and to check hours of operation. GPS locations are also given for each campground. It also lists some points of interest around the area of the campgrounds. This along with The Milepost were invaluable.

Editorial Review:

Detailed routes and advice for heading into the wilds of Alaska and northwestern Canada are provided in this guide for RV and tent campers. This grand tour of Alaska covers the infamous Alaskan Highway, routes throughout the Yukon and Alaskan outback, and the ferry system in southeast Alaska. Campgrounds throughout the region are listed with descriptions of amenities and recreational opportunities, maps, and contact information for each. Important details are discussed, including border crossings, budget planning, vehicle preparation, appropriate clothing, road conditions, and possible wildlife encounters. Included is recreational information on hiking, mountain biking, boating, rafting, kayaking, and viewing wildlife.

Editorial Review:

The Story of the Greatest Sports Moment of the Twentieth Century

Once upon a time, they taught us to believe. They were the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team, a blue-collar bunch led by an unconventional coach, and they engineered what Sports Illustrated called the greatest sports moment of the twentieth century. Their “Miracle on Ice” has become a national fairy tale, but the real Cinderella story is even more remarkable.

Wayne Coffey casts a fresh eye on this seminal sports event, giving readers an ice-level view of the amateurs who took on a Russian hockey juggernaut at the height of the Cold War. He details the unusual chemistry of the Americans—formulated by their fiercely determined coach, Herb Brooks—and seamlessly weaves portraits of the boys with the fluid action of the game itself. Coffey also traces the paths of the players and coaches since their stunning victory, examining how the Olympic events affected their lives.

Told with warmth and an uncanny eye for detail, The Boys of Winter is an intimate, perceptive portrayal of one Friday night in Lake Placid and the enduring power of the extraordinary.

Essential to using a compass 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I have been using a compass for many years but I always thought there was much more than I knew. I went to using GPS for all my navigation a few years ago. I purchased 3 books on compass usage a couple years ago after my wife and I broke my GPS during a snowstorm in the mountains of Colorado leaving us in a bad mess.
I quickly ran through the other 2, and although they were good they were not as complete as this one. I have carried it with me for 2 years now. I find that what I think I have learned is easily wrong when out in the field so I now carry it with me and practice the stuff I am unsure of. Some people think this book is wordy but I find it fascinating. I reread certain chapters over and over, finding I have glossed over something that is more important than I originally thought.
If you want to trust a compass this is the book for you, but plan on spending some time with it.
I am buying this book for my son-in law as he relies exclusively on a GPS.
I guess the only thing I disagree with is a statement that a compass almost never breaks, as I have several that have been retired over breakage. I carry 2-3 with me now as I guess I'm not disposed to trust any one navigational instrument.
