Still a great book, but a lot of overlap 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

A great source for beginner and intermediate level telemarkers. As the title would suggest, this "revised" version has a lot of overlap with the previous edition. For the price, however, it is worth picking up the new edition and gifting your old dog-eared copy of the original to a friend.

Perfect way to learn telemark! 5 out of 5 stars.

When I ask a very awesome and strong tele skier to teach me; she recommended this book. After having reviewed the basics - I can't wait for SNOW to do all the lessons that apply to me!!

Drop the knee - Not the bomb! 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm the illustrator of this groovy book. If the following sounds like shameless self promotion...it is. 123 tips in this UPDATED book! I personally subjected my ski partners to my less than subtal research technique, I bugged 'em by asking every concievable question and making 'em try (almost) every tip in the book. The winter of 97/98 involved getting up in the morning and going backcountry skiing, then coming home and drawing bizzare cartoons of what subtal telemark insights I uncovered durring the day. The result was the first edition of this book. People actually stop me on the street and thank me for improving their tele-skiing! Then, I spent the next decade practicing and refining NEW tips for this book. Now available, reafdy for your ski season. For example there is a funny cartoon of a guy puting a penny in his [...]...really! Strange but true, this is a valuable tool to perfect this beautiful style of skiing. 'nuff said...Mike Clelland!

Editorial Review:

A chronicle of surfer and photojournalist Weisbecker's two-year journey south from the Mexican border to solve the mystery of a friend's disappearance.

In 1996, Allan Weisbecker sold his home and his possessions, loaded his dog and surfboards into his truck, and set off in search of his lifelong surfing companion, Christopher, who had vanished into the wilds of Central America. Weisbecker traveled south from Mexico through seven countries before discovering his friend in a primeval rain forest, living a shockingly corrupt antithesis of their mutual dream of an Endless Summer perfect-wave paradise.

Intimately describing the people he befriended, the bandits he evaded, the waves he caught and lost en route to finding Christopher, In Search of Captain Zero is the story of Weisbecker's quest. This rollicking memoir of friendship and adventure is one part Road Fever and one part Heart of Darkness: a nonstop tale of territorial local surf-gang wars and all-gear-and-no-skill European dilettantes, of daring sea rescues, twentieth-century piracy, and a jungle road trip to the place that lies beyond the end of the road.

Editorial Review:

The definitive history of the Montreal Canadiens – to coincide with their Centenary in 2009.

Before there were slapshots, Foster Hewitt, or even an NHL, there were the Canadiens. Founded on December 4, 1909, the team won its first Stanley Cup in 1916. Since then, the Canadiens have won 23 more championships, making them the most successful hockey team in the world. The team has survived two wars, the Great Depression, NHL expansion, and countless other upheavals, thanks largely to the loyalty of fans and an extraordinary cast of players, coaches, owners, and managers.

The Montreal Canadiens captures the full glory of this saga. It weaves the personalities, triumphs, heartaches, and hysteria into a compelling narrative with a surprise on every page. It sheds new light on old questions – how the team colours were chosen, how the Canadiens came to be known as the Habitants – and goes behind the scenes of tumultuous recent events still awaiting thorough examination: why Scotty Bowman was passed over as general manager after Sam Pollock resigned; why Pollock’s successor, Irving Grunman, failed; why Serge Savard was dumped as GM so hastily despite his record.

Colourful and controversial, The Montreal Canadiens is the history of a team that has been making news for 100 years – and continues to do so with the return of legendary player Bob Gainey as general manager, determined to bring the Stanley Cup back to Montreal.

Great Read for All Hockey Fans 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was suprised by how unbiased this book was. Seeing that it was written by an Avs beat writer I assumed it would be one sided painting the Red Wings as the "Evil Empire" or what have you. That was not the Case. Not only did it cover the major games and playoff series of the rivalry it also gave short Bios of the key people involved ie Bowman, MacCarty, Draper, Roy, and of course Lemeiux.

Editorial Review:

In Blood Feud, Colorado Avalanche beat writer Dater not only submits that there was no more heated rivalry in North American pro sports in the final years of the 20th century and the first few years of the next than Red Wings-Avalanche, but that there was none better played. No fewer than 20 players have or will eventually make it to the Hall of Fame; the best scorers were matched up against the best goalies; brilliant coaches could be found on both benches; and two of the league's smartest general managers ruthlessly tried to one-up each other at every NHL trade deadline. A rollicking story of a fierce, and often violent, rivalry.

Palin is inspirational 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This travel documentary is exceptional, showcasing great landscapes and
various cultures with an element of uncertainty. But what makes it
inspirational is Michael Palin with his spirit of adventure, great sense
of humor and ability to connect with local people.

Palin's journey shows us how people across different ethnicities and
cultures have one thing in common - the 30 degree longitude (as he
travels along this route from North Pole to South Pole). It gives us a
sense of how in spite of our differences in race, religion and culture
we still share the same planet.

We can learn the political, social and economic situations unfolding in
those countries during early nineties. The world has changed a lot since
Palin's journey but his adventures will always be relevant regardless of
time.

This vicarious experience inspires me to embark on a real adventure.

Palins travels 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

"Pole to Pole" was the second of former Python Michael Palins great travels around the world after the groundbreaking series "Around the World in 80 days", and is equally exciting, thrilling, and entertaining.

This time the team travels along 30 degrees east longtitude from the North Pole through Scandinavia, Russia and the Soviet Union, Africa, (and forced by fate South America) to the South Pole, this being the route covering most land. As with 80 days, and his subsequent travels, "Pole to Pole" is filled with a great, warm spirit of enthusiasm, interest, and real, honest, good humour. Palin guides us, the viewers, through the many different countries and cultures with his usual witty and insightful commentary, and does what the travel industry calls 'the Palin effect' (that you want to go where Palin has gone) great honour.

Describing Palins travel programmes in one word is impossible, but if I had to choose or be beaten to death with a shoe, I'd describe them as inspiring. Truly, utterly, completely, magnificently, and really inspiring. And there cannot possibly be any other quality in a travel programme that is better than that.

The extra material on the DVDs are, as with all the other series, abundant. Lots of clips and segments that didn't make it to the final cut and a half hour interview with Michael Palin.

Highest possible recommendation.

Great book, but flawed... 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is a lyrical reflection on the oneness of nature and mankind's troubled relationship with it. It is recommended for anyone contemplating a journey to the higher latitudes. However, as a history of arctic exploration it is sadly flawed. The two chapters on early journeys of discovery and the quest for the northwest passage are chronologically jumbled. Furthermore, the inexplicable and virtually complete neglect of Amundson - including his learning from Eskimos - leaves one wondering what other omissions may have tilted the balance of Lopez's otherwise thought-provoking writing.

Editorial Review:

Barry Lopez has been hailed as a "master  nature writer" by The New York Times  Book Review, and Arctic  Dreams is undoubtedly his masterwork. Set amidst  the shimmering seas of Northern ice,  Arctic Dreams leads readers on a journey of  the mind and heart into a place that grips the  imagination and invigorates the soul. Part adventure  tale and part meditation on the art of  exploration, this magical book dazzles with the wonder of the  aurora borealis; the awesome power of polar bears  and killer whales; the monumental grandeur of  migrating icebergs; and the beauty and nobility of the  Arctic's indigenous people. Evocative and  everlasting, Arctic Dreams is a  classic.

This one is keeping me very happy in bed. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

What a great read! As the youngest daughter growing up in Detroit, I grew up in a family that loved professional hockey and college football . . . I watched from the fringes. Hockey did intrigue me, but I never really got hooked into the sport. As I went through the bookstore recently I spotted this book on the Redwings. I saw that it was individual stories and I thought that might be a great way to get a taste for what I may have missed, since my family goes on and on about the Wings. So glad I made the purchase. What a wonderful read. A few stories each night before bed, what a great way to retire. Each one is insightful and I was really drawn in. Guess what, I think I'm hooked . . . I will now be attending some live games. Go wings!!!

Editorial Review:

There are few things in sports as meaningful as lacing up one's skates to take the ice for the Detroit Red Wings, the NHL's proudest franchise. Only a chosen few can understand its impact, and they share their experiences in this compilation of personal stories and reminiscences. Detroit hockey fans, for the first time ever, can now fully grasp What It Means to Be a Red Wing.

Editorial Review:

The hottest thing in winter sports today is snowshoeing. It offers a great cardiovascular work-out for people of every age and fitness level. It's a low-impact sport, much simpler and safer than skiing. And modern aluminum snowshoes (the wood-and-moosehide models have been retired) are inexpensive, lightweight, sturdy, and look cool.

In The Snowshoe Experience Claire Walter acts as a kind of snowshoeing personal trainer, showing novices how to get maximum enjoyment out of an ancient wintertime activity that has become today's coolest cold-weather sport.

This is an activity kids, adults, and even seniors can do. Athletes will find it is a great way to stay in shape during the winter months. Couch potatoes will find that this is a fun activity that will lure them outside. And kids really love it. Snowshoeing is truly a sport for everyone.

Walter insists that if you can walk, you can snowshoe. Walter takes you, step-by-step, through the basics so you'll feel at ease--whether you are tramping across an open meadow or an urban park. And if you want to kick it up a couple notches, Walter discusses hiking in snowshoes, running in snowshoes (she supplies a list of places where you can find snowshoe races), and back-country adventures with snowshoes--including winter camping.

Whether you want a quiet walk across the snow, something with more of an adrenaline rush, or anything in between, The Snowshoe Experience is the one book that helps you do it all.
