Don't judge this book by its cover 2 out of 5 stars.
9 of 22 people found this review helpful.

I have been climbing for 3 days! And I starting looking for good books after my first climb. I've seen this book in person.

The cover on this book makes it look like the perfect resource for climbing. Look at it, it's all right there! I thumbed through this book last night at Barnes and Noble... and I picked two other books that were smaller and, I believe, better for beginners.

I don't think this book is useless. It has lots of good information in it. But I think there are better options for the beginner.

The first book I bought (read) and love is: Rock Climbing (Outdoor Pursuits Series) The second book, that I've only thumbed through so far, but looks perfect is: Rock Climbing : A Trailside Guide (Trailside Guide Series)

I normally don't review against a book, but THE COMPLETE CLIMBERS HANDBOOK struck me when I saw it as having a great cover that was not matched by the contents. Buy what you want, but remember - you can't judge a book by its cover. I would recommend either, or both, the books I finally bought over this one ANY day.

I don't think this book is useless. I'm sure it has great information in it. But I would recomend these other books for a beginner.

Editorial Review:

At 43, Brian Patrick O'Donoghue sees his youth slipping away. Yearning for one more challenge, he signs up to compete in the 1998 Yukon Quest Sled Dog Race. A last-place finisher a few years before in the Iditarod, O'Donoghue sets off with his fourteen Alaska huskies to find out if he and his team have the stuff to be contenders in an even more demanding race.

With wry humor, diminishing expectations, and newfound humility, O'Donoghue introduces readers to the canine characteristics who comprise his team. O'Donoghue also takes stock of the independent-thinking, quirky, and always interesting men and women against whom he races. But it is his own absorbing "head trip" down the cold, dark trail that is the most interesting of all.

The musher's strategies, hopes, dreams, and disappointments; the antics of the canine athletes, the drama of the race; and the unworldly wilderness venue add texture to a story of a personal journey by a young man who "gets away from it all" in an astonishing way.

A STUNNING BOOK 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

As one of the critics says; this i s indeed a pageturner... However, there are numerous faults facts in this book. Among them includes that the film IT`S A PLEASURE was a Fox film. Wrong, it was produced by International and released by RKO. Several critical comments on her films are stolen from among others Leslie Halliwell, a notable filmcritic and the ONLY bible for moviebuffs until internet movie database came along. Stories of Sonja and Tyrone are also way over the top; the talk they had in the dressingroom - how did Leif Henie and Raymond Strait get hold of t h a t? Leif was still in Norway at the time. However. There are several items that distinguish this biography; the stories by Sonja`s secretary Dorothy Stevens in particular... It is true that in creating the ice-skating star Sonja Henie, her father created a monster. But in the long run Sonja suffered from it. She was never taught to be a normal person. And indeed: She gave Norway a place in the sun and donated with her third husband Niels Onstad the Henie-Onstad ArtGallery near Oslo. U should visit it if u came to Norway. All of Sonja`s medals and trophies are in a well-guarded room and photos etc from her films are displayed in a huge basement. It must never be forgotten that she gave our nation a great deal - indeed giving the community of Bærum a home for retired people. U WILL see this reading this book that she was a trouper - a woman who was taught to fight and be competetive. And everything she tried her hands on - became lucrative.

Reveals the hard edge of this skating star.

Editorial Review:

White Heat is pure adrenaline -- a thrilling exploration of extreme skiing that pushes the reader over the edge with heart-pounding accounts of people who risk their lives on the fastest, steepest slopes.

Often obsessed and possibly crazy, extreme skiers and snowboarders are having the time of their lives facing death-defying challenges. But the extreme skiing life isn't just about the quest to finish first; it's a lifestyle made up of insane jumps, bone-breaking speeds, and world records -- not to mention the wild off-mountain social world, the flamboyant gear and slang completely unique to it, and, of course, the remarkable history of the racing champions and events that is its backdrop.

Wayne Johnson, former competitive skier and acclaimed novelist, takes us into the cult of extreme skiing populated by stars such as one-eyed jumping champion Jerry Martin, who held the North American distance record for more than a decade, and Vinko Bogataj, whose world-famous wipeout on ABC's Wide World of Sports gave rise to the expression "pulling a Vinko." Here are real-life adventures, everything from Shane McConkey ski BASE jumping the Eiger in Switzerland to Shawn White, the Flying Tomato, throwing 1260s in the halfpipe. Johnson, who has spent a lifetime on the mountains, also puts you in his boots when recounting goose-bump- inducing tales of high-speed downhill racing, Nordic jumping competitions, avalanche control, and the hip, ripping world of snowboarding.

If you've ever wondered what kind of nut would willingly choose to fly off a twenty-story ski jump, or have ever dreamed of living outside the usual boundaries, or just like to read about people having life-expanding adventures, then White Heat is an exhilarating thrill ride that will leave you breathless.

A must have Whistler guide book! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is packed with great black & white aerial photos that show you where the routes are, along with tidbit information about each one. Also included is insightful fun and valuable information about Whister. This book is pocket-sized and fits easily into a ski jacket without notice. The pages are nice and thick.

Don't get me wrong, the colorful free ski maps that Whistler gives out are pretty nice, but this book offers so much more with even small bits of information I found to be fairly accurate. My one regret is that we didn't buy this book before we went, which is my one advice; buy it before you go. I first spotted this book at the ski shop in Whistler as we were leaving. It cost over $30 USD. For such a small book it felt pretty pricey after our vacation paying resort prices. Luckily I found it online for about $15, though it took about 4 weeks to get. Still, even afterwards it's a great book to hang onto. We thumb through it just to reminisce about the routes we skied and what we plan to ski on our next trip!

Good guide for surfing Oahu and other known breaks in Hawaii 3 out of 5 stars.
37 of 38 people found this review helpful.

While this is A great guide for beginners with lots of surfing tips, the author only seems to offer good detail and research about Oahu, and many of the other major well known breaks. For the most part, the other islands don't get very good coverage. The author only lists 4 surf spots for the Big Island! If going to one of the other islands, the Beaches Guide books to each of the Hawaiian Islands by John Clark is much more informative about finding surf spots, as well as giving snorkeling and local history of the places.

IF YOU ARE ON YOUR WAY TO HAWAII, CONSIDER THIS ESSENTIAL! 5 out of 5 stars.

FEW REALIZE THAT GREG IS A STAFF WRITER @HNA (HAWAII NEWSPAPER AGENCY). THE MAN KNOWS HOW TO WRITE AND HAS A DEEP UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT AND WHERE THINGS ARE HAPPENING. THE BOOK IS A VIRTUAL ROAD MAP OF OUR SURF SPOTS IN THE ISLANDS. IF A SURF TRIP TO HAWAII IS IN THE CARDS, BE SURE TO PICK IT UP. I ASSURE YOU THAT YOU WILL HAVE NO REGRETS.

Editorial Review:

One of the most charismatic, popular, and talented snowboarders in the world, Todd Richards, tells the story of his life as a skateboarder–turned–world–class–snowboarder, and of the sport that in less than 10 years has gone from underground to the forefront of the Olympics.

In the late 1980s snowboarders were seen by skiers as skate–punks and 'knuckle–draggers' but in just a few years the sport has rapidly gained popularity in ski areas and resorts. By 1994 snowboarding was an exhibition sport at the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer; since then it has become one of the most popular sports in the Olympics. Todd Richards was there through it all and, as he tells his story, he shares the history of his sport.

Todd Richards is one of the biggest names in pro snowboarding. Now his image is on PlayStation games, plastic toys and countless magazines. He's won world championships and X Games medals. Known for his wit, work ethic, and front side 900, Todd has helped bring snowboarding out of obscurity and into the limelight. The sport continues to gain momentum through growing media coverage, and no professional embodies the image and attitude of snowboarding better than Todd Richards.
