Snowshoe Routes : Washington 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

My wife and I snowshoed for the first time this past winter - now were hooked. This book is a great resource for locating good hikes. When it is raining during the Seattle winter - grab your shoes, this book and head out. Your sure to find deep powder and a great trail. Well worth the money!

A nice resource for either the novice or the expert! 4 out of 5 stars.

This winter I went snowshoeing for the first time, and this was the guide that I used. Nelson provides a helpful resource for those searching for a nice trail or a backcountry spot to take on during a nice winter day. I found his directions and descriptions both informative and fun. If you live in the Northwest and own a pair of snowshoes, or want to try it for the first time -- as I did with a few friends -- than this book is well worth the cost!

Editorial Review:

Hockey is played faster every year. Players are bigger, stronger, faster, and more skilled than ever. Those who can’t maintain the pace have little chance of making it at the higher levels.

Laura Stamm’s Power Skating, Third Edition will help you develop explosive speed with Stamm’s proven techniques that have helped thousands of skaters at all levels of the game become great skaters. It also provides you with practice drills that will help you hone and transfer that speed to game situations.

Laura Stamm has taught the Los Angeles Kings, the New York Rangers, the New York Islanders, the New Jersey Devils, and other teams around the world have employed her Power Skating System as well. Thousands of amateur and pro players—including many NHL stars—learned directly from Stamm how to increase their speed, ability, and efficiency on the ice.

In this updated edition of her popular power skating book, Stamm introduces additional coverage of the topics most important to today’s hockey coaches and players. She explains everything from how to select proper skates and equipment for superior skating to all the critical components of explosive skating:

  • Balance for stability and speed
  • Explosiveness through greater force application
  • Starts for a step advantage on the opposition
  • Forward stride for a more aggressive attack
  • Backward stride for mobility on defense
  • Crossovers for split-second change of direction
  • Stops for being able to halt on a dime
  • Turns and transitions for multi-directional moves
  • Agility for maximum coverage of the ice
  • Training for faster and more powerful skating

Nearly 300 drawings and photographs illustrate skating skills from the basic to the complex. And for each maneuver you’ll also find a detailed explanation of how to perform the skill, plus proven drills and exercises to help you practice that maneuver. The exercises progress from the simplest to the most difficult and include special pointers for coaches.

Every great hockey player skates powerfully and is able to get in position to make the key play. Laura Stamm’s Power Skating will give you that explosive edge on the competition.

Very Cool Book 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 25 people found this review helpful.

Anyone who works or plays in the winter should read this book. As an avid outdoor sportsman, I found it to be very comprehensive and well organized. The illustrations and photos are great. I intend on buying the other books in the series.

Editorial Review:

The first in "Greg Davenport's Books for the Wilderness" series, "Surviving Cold Weather" covers the techniques and equipment necessary for surviving in ice and snow. Photos and drawings illustrate gear and techniques. The book covers the five survival essentials--personal protection, signaling, sustenance, navigation, and health--as they relate to the cold. Topics include: how to dress for winter; how to create a campsite and what to use as shelter; how to keep warm; how to signal for help with aerial flares, smoke, mirrors, and whistles; finding and purifying water; finding and preparing food; protecting yourself and your supplies from wildlife; how to use a map and compass; how to travel on snow and ice with snowshoes, skis, and crampons; and how to avoid and deal with avalanches. Upcoming books in the series are "Surviving Open and Coastal Waters," "Surviving the Desert," and "Surviving the Jungle."

Hey, this is a really cool book 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I must say this is a really cool book. I mean, first of all, the title is exactly what this book is about "Things Every Skier Must Know". Finally, a book that lives up to its title! Daaamn! This book is quite unique in that it does not teach you ski technique or ski mechanics or ski maintenance...just way, way too many of these books. Instead, this book teaches you stuff...really useful, practical stuff like how to hook up your skis on your car rack...the right way! Or how to look for a well-qualified ski instructor - believe me, this is not an easy task to do! I've taken so many ski lessons and ended up with so many bad ski instructors, it's not even funny and I pretty much had to learn skiing on my own. There is also great advice on how to prepare for a ski vacation and some brief notes on skiing on various terrains and even a chapter on ski racing! This book ponders on almost every aspect of skiing but the kitchen sink (What does that have to do with skiing, you wonder...absolutely nothing). I highly recommend this book. It is a great read on the plane or long trips to the ski resort. I mean it is quite lengthy for a ski book, but then I can't recall a ski book that is about everything there is to know about skiing?

Editorial Review:

The Essential Guide to Skiing is no rehash of the standard "how to ski" books, simply updated with newer pictures of newer equipment and clothing. Nor is it "Skiing for Dummies." Instead, it is a comprehensive book packed with authoritative advice on every aspect of the sport. For novices, there is information on how to walk in ski boots, when and where to rent equipment, and where to attach a lift ticket. Experienced skiers can learn how to find the shortest lift lines to the best slopes, discover the best goggle lens colors for flat light, and uncover the best powder stashes even when the mountain looks skied out. Other subjects range from the financial (finding the cheapest lift tickets) to the mundane (evaluating the fiber content of a pair of ski socks) to the creative (how to take great action pictures and videos). Extensive black-and-white photographs add to the fun.

Editorial Review:

At the conclusion of the 1992-93 NHL season, the Minnesota North Stars franchise was moved from Bloomington to Dallas. The word "North" was dropped from their name. Soon thereafter, Met Center -- the home to the North Stars -- was demolished. In what seemed like the blink of an eye, all evidence of the North Stars' existence was gone. Twenty-six years of hockey had been erased.

In Minnesota North Stars: History and Memories with Lou Nanne, the legacy of Minnesota's first NHL franchise is restored. Through vintage photos, official team stats, and the wonderful storytelling of Lou Nanne, this book captures the rich and colorful history of the North Stars.

Author Bob Showers created the book to be a vivid archive that would preserve the memory of the team. He and Lou spent months talking North Stars hockey and recording Lou's recollections. From action on the ice to behind-the-scenes deals, Lou Nanne is the ultimate authority on the Minnesota North Stars. His stories are humorous, informative and wildly entertaining.

Showers spent countless hours assembling over 600 North Stars photographs that are certain to stir many memories.

Minnesota North Stars fans--Enjoy!

A book for a diver 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This isn't Shadow Divers. This isn't written like a NY Times bestseller. It doesn't intensify or create drama like some other books do to try to captivate your interest. This book is written by a diver and is most appreciated by a fellow diver. Some complain of tangents which they say detract from the father and son story. These only serve to richen the experience for me. It not only tells the story but teaches valuable lessons and makes a diver desire further understanding on the many subject which are touched upon.

Editorial Review:

Chris and Chrissy Rouse, an experienced father-and-son scuba diving team, hoped to achieve widespread recognition for their outstanding but controversial diving skills. Obsessed and ambitious, they sought to solve the secrets of a mysterious, undocumented World War II German U-boat that lay under 230 feet of water, only a half-day's mission from New York Harbor. In doing so, they paid the ultimate price in their quest for fame.

Bernie Chowdhury, himself an expert diver and a close friend of the Rouses', explores the thrill-seeking world of deep-sea diving, including its legendary figures, most celebrated triumphs, and gruesome tragedies. By examining the diver's psychology through the complex father-and-son dynamic, Chowdhury illuminates the extreme sport diver's push toward -- and sometimes beyond -- the limits of human endurance.

AN "INSTANT" CLASSIC 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Wayne's history as a poet and wordsmith serves him well as he weaves this amazing adventure tale of his personal journey of the heart and soul. Chock full of descriptive passages: dirtbag chic, near death experiences and winter storms in the Southern San Juans that had me shivering in my slippers! And then....between the lines and pages there is Vreni and the heartwarming love story that exposes our Mr. Sheldrake for the hopeless romantic that he is, binds first his wounds and then the yarn itself into a fascinating whole.

Editorial Review:

With the beauty and precision of a poet, Wayne Sheldrake examines his place in the close community of ski bums, people who give up normality to live on their own terms. Sheldrake's is a life of recklessness and restlessness, dedicated to adventure, courage, and the joy of second and third chances. He maps the hidden trails of virgin snow and conjures the rush of hucking off cornices and skiing blind in sudden snowstorms with exacting detail, all the while seeking to understand the bonds of romance, friendship, and learning to let go. In Sheldrake's universe, instant karma is what happens when we believe our grandest passion can t be separated from the everyday, and then live in accordance with that faith.

The Bible of Glacier Travel 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Crevasses are one of those things that many of us who climb wish we didn't have to deal with. Unfortunately many people go out and climb while totally unprepared. Indeed they choose to not deal with it, and take enormous risks.

In this book Andy will give you the scoop on everything you ever wanted to know related to glacier travel. He starts by explaining what glaciers are, then he gets more into detail on how to routefind, traveling as a group, and of course how to perform crevasse rescue.

My honest opinion is that this book is not, by itself, going to make you an expert on the subject. I really don't think any book can. You need to get some training, be it with an experienced friend or established school but this book will show you all the techniques that you'll learn. Plus if you already know it can help you brush up and possibly show you new techniques. Great book, very typical high quality stuff from The Mountaineers.

Editorial Review:

Glacier Travel and Crevasse Rescue is a comprehensive course in understanding glaciers, crossing them, avoiding crevasses, and rescuing crevasse victims. Topics covered include: how glaciers form and how crevasses develop; basic principles of glacier travel; routefinding; knots and harnesses; holding a fall; rescue techniques, including self-belay and what a victim should do; and glacier skiing and sled hauling. New sidebars feature descriptions of accidents and near-accidents to emphasize the importance of the techniques presented.

With b&w photos and illustrations.

Interesting little book on sledding... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I liked this book very much - it's short and sweet. Lots of tips on good sledding technique, the history of sledding, and even apres sledding drink recipes...makes you want to get out there in the white stuff.

Great Book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a wonderful book! I purchased it for my 17 year old daughter who will be attending college in the north where they get a lot of snow. She loved it! I love the "old" look of the book. It brought back memories of the wonderful books I read as a child. I highly recommend it!

Pretty good book 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a nice little book that looks great on my coffee table and I've had a few guests flip through it already. I found the articles on the history of sledding and different styles of sleds especially interesting. Sledding has been a favorite pass-time of mine for as long as I can remember and it's great to have a book that celebrates that (as opposed to the many that focus only on skiing.)

However, I'm not one of those people who all but refuses to give a perfectly good product a five star rating. It's just that the main reason I bought this book was when I found out that it had an entire section on "building a better sled". I'm an avid do-it-yourselfer and am in the process of building my own sled so I had to get the only book out there that could really help me at the moment. However, the section turned out to be a very general story of how the author began his sled building company. That section was really of no help.

Still, I'm glad I bought this book and would definately reccomend it to a friend!

Editorial Review:

A sweet and nostalgic look at the Everyman's outdoor sporting fun-sledding. A successful sledmaker takes readers through a brief history of sleds and sledding, and taps into the emotional pull that many of us feel when we see those first frosty snowflakes-and a classic wood-and-metal flyer. From the use of sleds in the Olympic Games and the proper technique for kick sledding to choosing a good hill and making the perfect cocoa, this book is sure to charm readers of all ages.
