Editorial Review:

The early, romantic days of skiing in the West--the 1930s--40s and 50s--were a time of glamour and great excitement. That era of fun and elegance was captured on film by famed outdoor photographer Ray Atkeson and ski movie maker Warren Miller, who became friends in Squaw Valley in 1949. The historical images in this calendar come from ski resorts in Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Utah and Wyoming.

3rd time; Best of the Best! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

The new "Snow Walker's Companion" is the third version of Garrett and Alexandra Conover's "Winter Wilderness Companion (2001) and "A Snow Walker's Companion" (1996) and although much of the material is the same, Garrett told me in an interview that it was time for a revised text. In the five years since they wrote the "Wilderness" book there have been a number of significant changes in things like portable stoves (now can be bought made of titanium), GPS navigation and some other skills and gear; Suppliers have gone out of business and new ones have come into the marketplace, and some equipment and clothing that was not available commercially, is now. Stone Ridge Press, the new publisher, has added a new section of color photos and the journal of the first major trip that the Conovers made on snowshoes, towing their supplies on native sleds. All through, the book remains highly readable, enjoyable and thought-provoking. I felt the size of the "Wilderness Companion" was better for carrying in a pack, but that little quibble aside, the new edition is one of the very best winter camping books out there.

Editorial Review:

A guide to comfortable winter camping using native skills. Learn how to sleep warm, travel safe and many other secrets. Bonus: A 32-page, full-color insert on the authors' epic, 350-mile snowshoe trip across Labrador.

WONDERFUL BOOK...I MISS GEORGE 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

As a big hockey fan, and a goaltender, this was just required reading. Yet, it turned out to be more. This well written, quick read was a gas to enjoy and quote. I will be glad to read others by George Plimpton, and I'm already on the hunt for PAPER LION.
I guess thats my ringing endorcement. If I'm looking to read a book on football, the author must be wonderful. Quick, funny, well written, and vastly enjoyable, you wont regret buying this book, no matter what the price.

THE MAN BETWEEN THE PIPES SCORES 5 out of 5 stars.

THIS IS ONE OF PLIMPTON'S BEST. I REALLY ENJOYED HIS STORY PLAYING GOAL FOR THE BRUINS. HIS CONVERSATIONS WITH VARIOUS PLAYERS AND COACHES ARE EXCELLENT. HIS DESCRIPTIONS OF THE EVENTS MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE RIGHT THERE ON THE ICE WITH HIM. PLIMPTON DOESN'T WASTE TOO MUCH TIME DESCRIBING HIS SURROUNDINGS LIKE HE DOES IN OTHER BOOKS. HE GOES STRAIGHT TO THE POINT. SOME HIGHLIGHTS ARE DESCRIBING HOW HE PUTS HIS UNIFORM ON IN A DETAILED ORDER, OLD STORIES ABOUT EDDIE SHORE, AND HIS ACTUAL TIME ON THE ICE PLAYING GOAL DURING A COUPLE OF EXHIBITION GAMES MAKE THIS A GREAT READ.

Editorial Review:

OPEN NET is another inimitable account of an amateur's foibles meeting the world of professional sport.
George Plimpton takes to the ice a goalie for the Boston Bruins, after first signing a document holding the team harmless if he should meet with injury or death as their amateur goaltender. He survives a game against the Philadelphia Flyers relaticely unscathed - and brings back this memorable portrait of the rough-and-tumble world of professional hockey.

A good refresher 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is not comprehensive enough to teach you what you need to know. There is no substitute for an avalanche course with a real instructor. However, if you have taken a course but haven't used your knowledge as much as you wished you could, and are therefore trying to refresh your memory this is a great book. Because it's short it's a quick read: you can read it cover to cover to review the details of safety in avalanche terrain. It's also a useful reference book or intro to use before or during your Avy course.

Editorial Review:

The classic pocket guide to avoiding avalanches-updated with the latest in technology and technique.

• Authors have served as avalanche center directors
• The guide long used by ski patrol professionals
• Format redesigned for easy access to vital information

It's still the handy pocket guide offered at a bargain price. And it is still loaded with the vital information you need to survive in the mountains: how to determine potential avalanche hazard, traveling safely in avalanche terrain, what to do if you're caught in an avalanche, and search and rescue techniques. A respected authority since 1961, this enduring classic has been updated with the very latest research in the field, including avalanche transceiver technology.

Great book for cross country and telemark skiers 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book if you are looking for a guide to some of the best cross country and telemark trails, however since i was looking for more of a downhill backcountry guide, this is not really what i was looking for, but it is still a very informative and well written book.

An absolutely user friendly outdoor guide 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

A superbly presented compendium of two dozen classic ski and snowboard tours throughout the states of Vermont and New York, David Goodman's Backcountry Skiing Adventures offers the best routes, equipment and backcountry riding tips; topographic maps and photos for each tour; information on avalanche awareness, winter camping, gear, safety, and first aid. This absolutely user friendly outdoor guide is a "must" for anyone planning a skiing or snowboarding excursion in Vermont or New York. Also very highly recommended is the other title in this outstanding Appalachian Mountain Club "Backcountry Skiing Adventures" series: Classic Ski and Snowboard Tours in Maine and New Hampshire.

Editorial Review:

Plunging through deep powder, reaching high and wild mountain summits, the thrill of flying down a trackless snowy mountain, the solitary pleasure of traveling in the winter mountains - this is the world of Backcountry Skiing Adventures.

This book features two dozen classic ski and snowboard tours, including the highest peaks in Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts, the best snowboard routes, with equipment and backcountry riding tips, topographic maps and photos to accompany each tour, information on avalanche awareness, winter camping, gear, safety and first aid.

Northeast Outdoor Enthusiasts Rejoice! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Yes! This book is very unique in that is written for a few, specific winter activities (x-country skiing or snowshoeing) in a few very specific locations (New Hampshire and Vermont). If you are in the market for such a book, you don't have many choices to begin with. You'll be happy to know that this book does its subject justice.

People in the Northeast will truly enjoy this book as it covers the best winter activity locations primarily in both the Green and White mountains but also in a few other various locations in each state (including Southern New Hampshire and Vermont). The guide includes point-to-point trail directions, specific maps, driving directions, facility information, and the usual historical fun facts that always fill hiking books.

I grew up in New Hampshire and now live in Vermont. To find this book that covers both of my outdoor winter playgrounds was a true find. If you are a big outdoorsy person looking for a guide to places to help you with winter activities, this book by Marty Basch will be a welcome addition to your library or backpack.
