Review in Backpacker Magazine, May 1995 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

"Here's a book you should have. I know, I know, everybody says that but this is different. This book lays out what avalanches are and how they happen, and it will save your life. Now notice I didn't say this is a book you should have on your bookshelf. This one should be in the top pocket of your pack. Simply put,"Snow Sense" is a pocket guide to safe snow travel, whether you're hiking, backpacking, skiing, snowshoeing, or mountaineering in high risk areas.

Avalanches don't simply explode out of nowhere. The ones that kill people are usually started by the victims. This book will teach you that such catastrophes are avoidable. You can learn to recognize and evaluate avalanche hazards. You can learn to "read" the snowpack, "read" the mountains, and save your skin. "Snow Sense" is a hands-on, explicit, clear-thinking, hard-hitting field guide that teaches you how. By studying the book's "bulls-eye" clues to snowpack stability, hardness tests, shear block tests, weather analysis, simple physics, and hazard checklists, you'll come away with all you need to know about avalanches and how to avoid being caught by one.

Read it once. Read it again. Take it into the field and practice the skills it teaches. Every time I hear of another avalanche-caused death in the Rockies, I wish the victim had read this book. The survivors must read it.

Editorial Review:

"Snow Sense" is the best-selling, easiest to read, most informative avalanche safety book available. Intended for skiers, snowmachiners, snowboarders, climbers and others who work and play in avalanche country, "Snow Sense" is written to help backcountry travelers learn to recognize, evaluate, and avoid snow avalanche hazards.

Avalanche accidents do not happen by accident; they happen for particular reasons. "Snow Sense" addresses the critical terrain, snowpack, and weather variables that make it possible for a slope to avalanche along with the human factors that allow most accidents to happen. If you don't want to become an avalanche victim, read this book.

Editorial Review:

In its heyday, Colorado had more than 175 ski areas operating on the slopes of the Rocky Mountains, and while many of those resorts have shut down, their runs still shelter secret stashes of snow. Pristine slopes await backcountry powder hounds out to discover these chutes and steeps, bunny hills and bumps. Chronicling the history of more than 35 of these "lost resorts," Powder Ghost Towns provides the beta for how to ski and board these classic runs today, with comprehensive information on trailheads, where to skin up, and the best descents. Coverage ranges from southern Wyoming's Medicine Bow Mountains to the Colorado-New Mexico border, including famous old resorts like Hidden Valley in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Not impressed 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The cover is much more engaging than the stories. They are not bad, some interesting images, but nothing to write home about. The writing skill and the introspective is what you might expect from a surfer journalist dude. All of it very little to do with surfing actually, but more of a mediocre journalists' travel diary. As a surfer and a reader, I preferred Daniel Duanes' "A Surfer's Year on the California Coast". Sorry, guys, I could be just PMS-ing but...not really.

Editorial Review:

From the big-wave surfers of Tahiti and the salty hurricane chasers of New England, to the cliffs of Molokai's infamous leper colony and the Wild Coast of South Africa's Transkei Homeland, Return by Water brings light to surfers' lives around the world with amazing sense of place and deft character portraits of the famous, ordinary and irascible surfer alike. Follow surf journalist Kimball Taylor on his travels through South Africa, Ecuador, Brazil, Mexico, Hawaii, French Polynesia, Indonesia and more. The journey is as transforming and definitive as any surfer's first trip away from home.

Year Round Guide is Tops 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I've read seemingly every 14er guide available. Much of the information overlaps as one can imagine. However, what really sets this (and the companion volume as well) one apart is the truly four season information that it provides. Louis gives you ratings for summer and snow climbs as well as ski descents. None of the other 14er guides I've read give you that. These volumes are often compared to Gerry Roach's books which are excellent in their own right. However, in my mind the information in Louis Dawson's guides is better as many of us climb in seasons other than summer!

a great guide for year round climbing 5 out of 5 stars.

Lou Dawson is incredible, not only does he describe summer routes in this guide but makes one want to get out of their "warm" recliner and conquer some winter and spring routes as well. a must have book for Colorado's 14'ers. While you at it, get Vol 2 as well!

Editorial Review:

Good Overview 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Cheers to the author for coming up with the first world wide surf guide book. The book includes helpful info on forecasting, how waves are created, and of course worldwide wave hotspots. It will be interesting to see a second edition of it since there are mistakes in the book. For example, for some areas the charts for best time of year to surf are off, to mention one Puerto Rico's. Also breaks are referred to by the wrong name sometimes and even the by month temperatures seem off (i.e Californias). I was eager to buy the book but once I saw the mistakes I decided to wait for maybe a corrected second edition. I recommend to the author that he researches the "hot spots" a bit more carefully. Also just for the sake of adventure a section discussing the potential of discovery around the world would be interesting to see, say the potential around the South Pacific, or Africa for new waves to be discovered. The book may work as a good beginners guide to where the waves are, but for a specific surf trip a more descriptive and more accurate guide would be invaluable.

Editorial Review:

This guide is the 1st in a series of three comprehensive color guides to 240 of the planet's premier surfing coastlines. Each volume explores a selection of 80 mainstream and lesser known surf zones across the nine continental and oceanic chapters.

eocha's Ski Snowboard America (20th Edition) is a complete guidebook that provides the information to make reservations and plans. The writers let skiers know whether the resort is a cluster of condominiums clinging to a steep slope or a traditional mountain village exuding old-world atmosphere and whether they should pack a sequined gown or simply bluejeans for the nightlife. It includes expanded up-to-date coverage of more than 100 resorts in the U.S., Canada and South America.

Well organized, accurate, up to date...great 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Awesome book, printed on plastic-y waterproof paper, follows the coast north to south, does a great job with most major breaks and the promising coastlines in between. Talks a lot about sharks, I guess it's part of surfing up here, but really...we know that already, no need to mention everytime some dude's gotten chomped on in the last 25 years. Bought this and the Bank Wright surfing California...I only surf in central/northern Cali and this book is wayyyy better. Wright's is out of date, insuficient and inaccurate for most of northern California's spots...great investment for the newer norcal surfer looking to travel. Highly recommended...just don't let the locals see it on your dashboard...

Editorial Review:

Informative text answers the burning questions that surfers often pose: What tide? What wind? What swell? How are the locals? Are they worse than the sharks -- or the traffic? With helpful maps, photos, and directions, this Surfer's Guide is sure to become the gold standard for anyone looking to score the perfect wave.

A must for the backcountry enthusiast 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

If you are planning a winter/spring backcountry trip and want accurate, detailed information on routes, terrain, and level of difficulty for some of the best skiing/snowboarding terrain in California than this is the perfect book. The book is well organized, clearly written and beautifully illustrated. Everytime I pick up the book I find myself mentally planning new trips and plotting descent routes on the photographs. An added plus to the book is the wealth of information that it contains on preparing for a backcountry experience. The author covers everything from avalanche danger to equipment to bring on an extended trip. He even includes an excellent website for those who want more information. There always is a question in my mind when I read any backcountry guide about the accuracy of the information. Who wants to set out on a trip only to find out that the route maps or the descriptions don't match the terrain? The author is someone with extensive backcountry experience who has done each of the 50 trips described in the book at least once. We all sould be so lucky! Having taken two trips with the author that are detailed in the book, I can say that he did an excellent job of describing the routes and the terrain. If you are someone who is looking for backcountry ski/snowbaording adventure, this book will make your trip planning a whole lot easier. Enjoy
