Hugely detailed, engaging style, up-to-date, fun and informative to read. Without any doubt the best guide to Madagascar on the market.

We are traveleing to Madagascar this summer and have had trouble finding internet based companies in Madagascar. Her recommendations were great! Also, the information about the parks was a real help in deciding where to go in a limited time frame.

Editorial Review:

Tourism in Madagascar has leapt forward as a result of the cartoon film and media coverage of its culture and wildlife. The tourism infrastructure has been improved, with better roads and new luxury hotels, without compromising the focus on ecotourism. The world’s fourth largest island now appeals to a broad spectrum of visitors, from those seeking hard adventure to others content to enjoy the beautiful beaches and accessible national parks.

Lonely Planet's Madagascar & Comoros 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Writing a review of a travel guide that one has not yet used presents fundamental difficulties in judging the usefulness, accuracy, and validity of the information given. Nonetheless, I have lots of experience using guides and, further, I have the 2007 edition of Hilary Bradt's Madagascar book to compare with the Lonely Planet publication. To begin with, the Lonely Planet guide is of a smaller format and shorter in length than Bradt. It covers an additional subject, the Comoros. The net effect is a more surface treatment of the sights and regions of the country, but a heavy emphasis on such practical aspects as where to stay and eat and how to get around. There are excellent maps of towns and small local areas. Lonely Planet authors give opinions about destinations that have become too popular for their own good and suggest itineraries. One irritating feature, however, is the index. Numerous times, when I attempted to look up a place, I could not find it until I studied the two-page color map at the beginning of the book (you have to have an idea where in Madagascar this place is) and found out how it was listed. For example, I couldn't find Isalo until I looked under Parc National d'l'Isalo. Overall, I believe that the Lonely Planet guide to Madagascar is an indispensible companion, but I believe, too, that the Bradt has so many other assets that the two books complement each other and I would not want to travel in Madagascar without either of them.

Editorial Review:

Beautifully illustrated with full color photographs throughout, Madagascar Wildlife is a celebration of the unique fauna of a remarkable island and the perfect accompaniment to Bradt’s popular general travel guide, Madagascar. The guide is ideal for natural history enthusiasts and travelers alike, and the third edition has been fully revised to include new species. For example, there are 20 more species of lemur than in the last edition, and the number of known frog species has nearly doubled.

This has to be the definitive book about Madagascar, its people and wildlife 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Excellent - one of those guides that make you feel you've already been there. Given the size of Madagascar and the difficulty of its internal communications, the update is as good as one could reasonably demand. Ms Bradt knows her subject, from terrain to people to unique wildlife. No visitor should be without this invaluable publication

Editorial Review:

Lying some 250 miles off the east coast of Africa, Madagascar is the world's fourth-largest island. It is quite unlike the neighboring continent, and, for that matter, quite unlike any other landmass on the planet. Its plant life is almost wholly endemic: eight out of 10 plants there grow naturally only on Madagascar, and it has an entire ecosystem, the spiny desert, that is found nowhere else on earth. Many of its animal species, too, seem to have emerged from some evolutionary track that runs parallel to the rest of the world's; here can be found lemurs that will fit into a human palm, dwarf hippos, giant chameleons, and other rarities.

These plants and animals constitute an extraordinary diversity, writes science journalist Peter Tyson in this engaging book, and the island's richness of life has long intrigued scientists, who have proposed several theories to explain it. Those scientists, some of whom Tyson profiles at work in the field, are racing against time to catalog island life before it disappears, for Madagascar's human population is rapidly growing, and with that growth, the island's forests and other habitats are falling. The urgency may abate, Tyson writes, with guarded optimism, now that the island's current president has proposed that all of Madagascar be considered as a United Nations World Heritage Site, which would help provide funds to prevent further loss of habitat and diversity. Though this proposal is controversial, Tyson makes a good case for why it should be taken up--and he shows just how high the stakes are.

Throughout his narrative, Tyson mixes scientific reportage with a nicely rendered travelogue that guides readers across the island while outlining key concepts of island biogeography and conservation biology. His book is a worthy companion to David Quammen's Song of the Dodo, and valuable reading for anyone concerned with the world environment. --Gregory McNamee

"The Indian Ocean" a quick tour of the Eastern Islands 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The book is filled with beautiful photographs, and the text borders on poetry--clearly a labor of love by the author and photographers. An excellent book for a quick overview of the islands. There is a section on each island,, with descriptions of its physical and cultural features. Text and photographs tend to weigh more heavily on the cultural. There is even a section with useful information for tourists. I would have liked to see and read more about the unique animals of these islands.

Editorial Review:

A guide to the Indian Ocean with both text and photographs.
