Delightfully crisp prose 4 out of 5 stars.

This book details the encounters of Choukri with Jean Genet in Tangier over a short period of time. The prose describing the encounters and the selection of details to include in the description is masterful - in a slim volume one gains both a feeling of Morocco's bureaucrats, of the author's respect for Genet and of Genet himself. There is no hint of "gossip column" or "me with a big shot" - both of which are dangers for this type of writing. This is book is well worth your time.

a beautiful prose 5 out of 5 stars.

One of the rare books I could read in one breath. It is short, inspiring, and imaginative. Choukri's writing is very simple, like a dessin, in a diary style. Simple, yet it tells so much about so many things, mainly about Genet and how he relates to people, what he thinks about literature. It also tells a good deal about Morocco. The translation is excellent, I think. The beauty of the language is well preserved.
One will sense the respect Choukri has for Genet, and his compassion, sensitivity and warmth toward the society. There are a few pictures of the author with Genet and his friends also, which is a treat.
A great page turner. Couldn't put it down. One of the most beautiful proses I've ever read. Now I'm looking for more books by Choukri.

Editorial Review:

An unforgettable report on one man's hajj--the sacred rite that brings millions of Muslims to Mecca every year

In 1999, the Moroccan scholar Abdellah Hammoudi, trained in Paris and teaching in America, decided to go on the pilgrimage to Mecca. He wanted to observe the hajj as an anthropologist but also to experience it as an ordinary pilgrim, and to write about it for both Muslims and non-Muslims. Here is his intimate, intense, and detailed account of the Hajj--a rare and important document by a subtle, learned, and sympathetic writer.

Hammoudi describes not just the adventure, the human pressures, and the social tumult--everything from the early preparations to the last climactic scenes in the holy shrines of Medina and Mecca--but also the intricate politics and amazing complexity of the entire pilgrimage experience. He pays special heed to the effects of Saudi bureaucratic control over the Hajj, to the ways that faith itself becomes a lucrative source of commerce for the Arabian kingdom, and to the Wahhabi inflections of the basic Muslim message.

Here, too, is a poignant discussion of the inner voyage that pilgrimage can mean to those who embark on it: the transformed sense of daily life, of worship, and of political engagement. Hammoudi acknowledges that he was spurred to reconsider his own ideas about faith, gesture, community, and nationality in unanticipated ways. This is a remarkable work of literature about both the outer forms and the inner meanings of Islam today.

A New Series Designed for Travelers Who Want More Than a Guidebook

Each edition of this unique series marries a collection of previously published essays with detailed practical information, creating a colorful and deeply absorbing pastiche of opinions and advice. Each book is a valuable resource—a compass of sorts—pointing vacationers, business travelers, and readers in many directions. Going abroad with a Collected Traveler edition is like being accompanied by a group of savvy and observant friends who are intimately familiar with your destination.

This Edition on Morocco Features:

• Distinguished writers, such as Paul Bowles, Barbara Grizzuti Harrison, Michael Mewshaw, Peter Theroux, Florence Fabricant, Nancy R. Newhouse, Jeffrey Tayler, Nancy Harmon Jenkins, Christopher Petkanas, Patricia Storace, Suzy Gershman, Michael Kimmelman, Dorothy Kalins, Naomi Barry, and Peggy Knickerbocker, who share seductive insights into Morocco’s legendary cuisine, restaurants, and hospitality; the Imperial Cities of Fez, Marrakech, Meknes, and Rabat; the treasures of Tangier; the cosmopolitan atmosphere of Casablanca; and the less-traveled routes through mountains, valleys, and the Sahara.

* Annotated bibliographies for each section with recommendations for related readings.

* An A–Z “renseignements pratiques” (practical information) section covering everything from accommodations, bargaining, clothing, and inshallah to medinas, souks, and thé à la menthe.

Whether it’s your first trip or your tenth, the Collected Traveler books are indispensable, and meant to be the first volumes you turn to when planning your journeys.

Also in the Collected Traveler series: Central Italy—Tuscany & Umbria, Paris, Provence, and the forthcoming Venice, the Veneto & Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

A MUST for anyone going to or interested in Morocco 5 out of 5 stars.
30 of 30 people found this review helpful.

In anticipation of accompanying my close Moroccon friend to his homeland on a business trip with another American, I read this book in one sitting and read it twice more before leaving for Morocco. It proved to be an invaluable tool to better understanding my Moroccan friend here in the states and it provided knowledge, information and tips that proved priceless during my recent stay in Morocco. I have no doubt that had I not read this book, I would have had a very different experience. This book enabled me to have the most incredible travel experience of my life despite the fact that I don't speak arabic or french. At the very least I had an understanding of this wonderfully rich culture steeped in tradition. I recommend this book to anyone interested in Morocco whether for travelling or simply interested in the country, their people and customs. While this book is ideal for someone relocating, I found it to be more useful than any of the other travel companions I purchased for my trip. Any future travel plans of mine will start with a purchase of "Culture Shock..." for that country.

Editorial Review:

You'll never feel intimidated and awkward about the customs and etiquette of another country again. With the insights provided in this CULTURE SHOCK! Guide, you'll learn to see beyond the stereotypes and misinformation that often precede a visit to a foreign land. Whether you plan to stay for a week or for a year, you'll benefit from such topics as understanding the rules of driving and monetary systems, religious practices and making friends. There are tips on political traditions, building business relationships, and the particular intricacies of setting up a home or office. Great for the business traveler, the foreign exchange student, or the tourist who makes a sincere attempt to cross the bridge into a new and exciting culture.

I've recently tested this book on a two-week trek in Morocco and it's outstanding. There are no other comparable guides but even so this one is really well written, very accurate and really added to my enjoyment of the Atlas. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Throughout Bruno Barbey's travels, one constant remains - his love for and fascination with Morocco, his homeland. He focuses on the yellow ochre/burnt umber tones of the towns and rural areas to create colour-drenched, strongly graphic images rendered dazzling by Morocco's scorching light.
