Truly a vital tool for visitors to this revitalized nation ! 5 out of 5 stars.

Mozambique has only recently re-opened to tourism, after years of war and bloodshed. Fortunately the hard times are now over, and the country is once again a thriving, wonderful African nation. I loved it all - the people, the food, the music... With this Lonely Planet guide, I was really able to get the most out of my stay. It contains plenty of advice on visiting places, hotels, restaurants, etc. And also great advice on how to save money - indeed, Mozambique can be very expensive ! A country and a book I won't forget.

Watch the spirits of the dead come to life at a masked mapiko dance.

Somewhat Disappointing 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am a great fan of the main author of this book, Philip Briggs, and until now have found all Bradt guides written by him so good that I decided to buy any of his books without hesitation.

Unfortunately, this Mozambique guide is not quite the same quality as the others though.
To start with, it is pretty slim. For a huge country like Mozambique, it has almost the same page count as the guide to small Malawi, and is much slimmer than the guide to also smaller Uganda. As a consequence, it does not go into the same depth as other Bradt guides, and concentrates on popular beach spots and major cities/towns only.
Even Brigg's trademark detail on local fauna and national parks is conspiciously missing, with 2 of the country's (only) five national parks not even getting an entry in the book, other described very briefly in a few lines.
Nor will you find much info on remote regions or hiking.
Transport info is also spotty - detail on bus services is included for many small places, but not for several major towns like Beira or Tete! Almost no info on crossing to Mozambique overland from neighbouring countries either.
The list of recommended books for further reading seems almost a decade out of date, as do references throughout the guide to Zimbabwe as a popular tourist destinastion!

Oh well.
The info which is in the book is still interesting enough, and more than that contained in the other guide I carry, Lonely Planet's Southern Africa. I haven't had the chance to see LP's separate Mozambique guide, but I'd suggest you try and compare it with this book before deciding which one to buy!

Naipaul's glance at post-Colonial Africa 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Shiva Naipaul's _North of South: An African Journey_ is the most cynical book I've ever read. It is a travelogue of the author's visit to three postcolonial African countries in the 1970s: Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia. Naipaul is a Hindu, born in Trinidad, and he pays attention to the role (and plight) of South Asians (Hindus, Pakistanis, Sikhs, Parsees, etc) in East Africa. He also focuses on the black-white relations in Africa as well. Naipaul gives Africa and everyone involved in its affairs (whites, blacks and Asians) no credit whatsoever. Declining European colonial powers gave their African colonies political independence in the 1960s and a variety of demagogues like and Julius Nyerre in Tanzania who took power spouting third world varieties of socialism and Marxism. Despite claims of social and economic progress, Africa remains as backward as ever. Naipaul freely writes of his disgust with the countries and its deceived leadership from the first page of the book until the last. This book, like another reviewer noted below, certainly is not going to make it into a black studies program anytime soon. It is a relief from portraits of Africa that classify it as a tropical paradise, a land of innocents exploited by evil Europeans, or conversely an AIDS infested human disaster. Naipaul's cynicism shows Africa the way it really is-struggling, corrupt, deceived, but at the same time Afroca is chugging along optimistically in some areas, with idealism and occasional realism, and attempting to do as well as it can to develop itself. No dry textbook prose here; the book is short, easy to read, engaging and very well written.

Editorial Review:

When her father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience, Margaret Hale is uprooted from her comfortable home in Hampshire to move with her family to the north of England. Initially repulsed by the ugliness of her new surroundings in the industrial town of Milton, Margaret becomes aware of the poverty and suffering of the local mill workers and develops a passionate sense of social justice. This is intensified by her tempestuous relationship with the mill-owner and self-made man, John Thornton, as their fierce opposition over his treatment of his employees masks a deeper attraction. In "North and South", Elizabeth Gaskell skillfully fused individual feeling with social concern, and in Margaret Hale created one of the most original heroines of Victorian literature.

Editorial Review:

Lonely Planet is ready to ease your way through Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia with this thorough first-edition guide. "The tourist brochures bill Malawi as 'the warm heart of Africa' and, for once, the hype is true; Malawi's scenery is stunning and wonderfully varied, and (although we hate to generalize) Malawians really do seem to be among the friendliest people you could meet anywhere" is how author David Else, who has traveled extensively all over Africa, introduces the book. This country offers the magnificent beauty and interesting wildlife found in Lake Malawi, wildlife parks, national parks, and forest reserves. Its compact size makes Malawi an excellent jumping-off point to venture into the less tourist-ready marvels of Mozambique and Zambia.

In addition to helping you find your way around and the best places to stay, this book will help you tell your red bishops from your sunbirds, your rollers from your hoopoes ... and that's only the bird section. Cultural and historical information ranges from the Stone Age to African kings, from Dr. Livingstone to President Banda. Shaded sidebars provide additional information on topics such as tea growing, on-line services, driving, Islam, economic swings, ecology, food taxes, and the effects of colonialism. A useful index gives an overview of the maps provided (36 of them) along with page numbers for easy reference.

MOZAMBIQUE MYSTERIES is about turning fifty and finding a new direction. Lisa St Aubin de Teran travelled to Mozambique and, for the first time in her much-travelled life, felt at home - in a place 'so remote that few have visited it since the time of Vasco da Gama'. After three marriages and various affairs, she also fell in love. She set up a school and, together with her niece, the Teran Foundation. From the acclaimed author of THE HACIENDA,MOZAMBIQUE MYSTERIES is a story of new beginnings in a country of contrasts and challenges - her most inspiring story yet.

Editorial Review:

Even in this age of extreme sports and made-for-TV survival games, there still exist places on earth where the most intrepid among us can plunge into truly unknown territory. The acclaimed adventure writer Peter Stark had waited all his life for just such an opportunity. But when he was invited to Africa to join a small expedition kayaking down Mozambique’s Lugenda River, he balked. The 750-kilometer rivercourse was largely uncharted–dotted with rapids, waterfalls, and home to deadly crocodiles and hippos; two of his four travel companions were not skilled kayakers; and he had a family to think of, (not to mention that at forty-eight, he himself was feeling a bit old for the life untamed). Suppressing inner doubts and driven by that most human of urges–to see what lies beyond the next bend–Stark signed on for the adventure of a lifetime.

At the Mercy of the River is Stark’s harrowing, insightful account of this venture into the unknown. “Why,” he muses between capsizes in the Lugenda’s croc-infested waters, “are humans compelled to explore?” The expedition’s five distinct–and sometimes clashing–personalities provide individual answers to that question.

Equipped with only the most rudimentary comforts and lacking the customary explorer’s gun, the party encounters breathtaking natural splendor, rich wildlife, and villages little affected by modern life. Ever aware that they are following in the metaphorical footsteps of great explorers of the past–Vasco da Gama, Mungo Park, Ibn Battuta, David Livingstone, and other men of adventure who bridged Africa and the West–Stark shares these explorers’ stories with us, finding a common thread linking his experience with theirs. Using their accounts, his travails on the Lugenda River, and the insights of wilderness philosophers such as Henry David Thoreau, Stark attempts to understand the very nature of “exploration” while pondering the question, Where will we go when our wilderness vanishes?

At the Mercy of the River is at turns inspiring, heart-thumping, and even amusing. But most of all, it is a riveting adventure story for a time when adventure is in danger of losing its meaning.

Vic Guhrs --talented writer. 5 out of 5 stars.

Though this artist is, first and foremost, a talented painter; much to my delight, he is also an excellent writer. His writing is vivid, thoughtful, and candid; his stories, fascinating. Lucky for us that this painter tried his hand at writing and shared the Africa he knows with us!

Editorial Review:

This title refers to the frustrations and vexations we experience when we try to judge Africa from our Western perspective. It also alludes to the notion that although we may be confused and impatient with it, we are in Africa's spell. Once Africa is in our blood, it is hard to let go. The author uses paintings accompanied by anecdotes and stories of his experiences in the bush and the people he met there to portray the magic of Africa, while simultaneously exploring the mystical connection between wild animals and man. The author also makes mention of one of Africa's great conservationists, Norman Carr, as well as the splendour and beauty of Zambia, both of which he feels have not received the attention they deserve.
