Editorial Review:

In 2000 the United States began accepting 3,800 refugees from one of Africa's longest civil wars. They were just some of the thousands of young men, known as "Lost Boys," who had been orphaned or otherwise separated from their families in the chaos of a brutal conflict that has ravaged Sudan since 1983. The Lost Boys of Sudan focuses on four of these refugees. Theirs, however, is a typical story, one that repeated itself wherever the Lost Boys could be found across America. Jacob Magot, Peter Anyang, Daniel Khoch, and Marko Ayii were among 150 or so Lost Boys who were resettled in Atlanta. Like most of their fellow refugees, they had never before turned on a light switch, used a kitchen appliance, or ridden in a car or subway train-much less held a job or balanced a checkbook. We relive their early excitement and disorientation, their growing despondency over fruitless job searches, adjustments they faced upon finally entering the workforce, their experiences of post-9/11 xenophobia, and their undying dreams of acquiring an education.

As we immerse ourselves in the Lost Boys' daily lives, we also get to know the social services professionals and volunteers, celebrities, community leaders, and others who guided them-with occasional detours-toward self-sufficiency. Along the way author Mark Bixler looks closely at the ins and outs of U.S. refugee policy, the politics of international aid, the history of Sudan, and the radical Islamist underpinnings of its government. America is home to more foreign-born residents than ever before; the Lost Boys have repaid that gift in full through their example of unflagging resolve, hope, and faith.

Useful and eloquent 5 out of 5 stars.

I recently visited Sudan and somebody gave me this book.
I only saw Khartoum, Omdurman and the ancient sites of Naqa and Meroe.
However for these locations and for the general backgrounds on Sudan and the conflicts that still rage there the book gave excellent and very up to date backgrounds.
It is practical on the ground, but after returning I decided to get a copy for myself as a reference book.
There are just the minor details which will need a correcion for the moment, like recently some new hotels opened.
And the Greek-Orthodox church mentioned turned out to be a Coptic church, and apart from the Sufi zikr location mentioned in Omdurman, Khartoum's twin city, there are numerous other zikrs, but those perhapt should be kept secret for tourism.

Editorial Review:

What would happen if you took some of Britain's best writing talent, put them on a plane and flew them to one of the most extraordinary and inaccessible places on the planet? What would happen if you took Irvine Welsh from the streets of Edinburgh and showed him a remote, dangerous village in Africa? What would happen if you flew Alex Garland into one of the world's most hazardous war zones? And how would Tony Hawks react if you dragged him away from his tennis and asked him to write a song with a Sudanese tribesman? With Victoria Glendinning, Andrew O'Hagan, Giles Foden and WF Deedes, these writers have experienced for themselves one of the most beautiful and yet troubled lands in the world - The Sudan. This remarkable collection of short stories and evocative travel writing is their response - as diverse and unpredictable as the country itself.

Editorial Review:

The Red Sea is the closest tropical sea to Europe. It is almost an extension of the Mediterranean from which it is separated by the Isthmus of Suez. This proximity to the early civilisations of the Mediterranean have strongly affected the history of the Red Sea which has always progressed in parallel to that of the Old World. The Red Sea was frequented by the ancient Egyptians, Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans who left traces of their passing in shipwrecks that every now and then are rediscovered. The ships that have ploughed the waters of the Red Sea for millennia have had to deal with strong currents and high winds that have turned this sea into a graveyard of ships from every age. The result is a delight for divers who have always found in the sea an underwater Eldorado. The famous Austrian pioneer, Hans Hass, came here after World War II and took the first photographs of the Umbria and her 360,000 unexploded bombs using his legendary Robot. The Italians arrived in 1953 on the Formica in an expedition whose members counted names that have gone down in diving history: Vailati, Quilici, Cousteau...This book tells the story of the exploration of the Red Sea, especially underwater, taking both history and natural history into account. The reader is guided through the magical submerged gardens of the Sinai, on the adventurous discovery of unknown wrecks, on a search for the remains of the Precontinente II, to Cousteau's village, face to face with sharks, and to the beaches. This new title in the "Secrets of the Sea" series, contains dramatic underwater photography.

This is really a good map, with village names accurately spelled, etc., making it different from (& better than) Rand McNally World, etc. "Roads" and paths, as well as geographic features/landmarks, are quite accurately laid out, and recognizable. Recommended.

Editorial Review:

This is the first English-language version of one of the classics of photographic literature, George Rodger's Village of the Nubas, which was originally published in France in 1955. Rodger was a Life magazine photographer during World War II, but in 1945 he reached a breaking point after having witnessed for years the atrocities of that war. He became determined to find a world in which universal values prevailed and the horror of war could never be repeated. With that, arguably naive, intent, he traveled to Africa on a quest for a society untarnished by "civilization." He found the Nubas, a southern Sudanese people living in the region around Kordofan, and developed a series of pictures of and writings about them and their customs. His photographs and writings serve as an intimate and revealing record of the state of Africa just before the "modernizing" changes of the postwar era began. Using a Rolleiflex and a Leica to capture images, and keeping copious diaries, Rodger invented the genre of "package stories," which he sold to magazines like National Geographic. His famous portrait of a dignified Korongo Nuba wrestling champion being carried aloft the shoulders of his defeated foe caught the attention of the German photographer Leni Riefenstahl, who would later document the Nubas herself. This compelling, 120-page, diary-sized hardcover includes Rodger's original text and 38 excellent black-and-white reproductions. --A.C. Smith

Dated but interesting travel up the Nile 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I was lead to this book by Stanley Stewart's successive work "The Empire of Gengis Kahn" which I had found very amusing. This delightful travel book was written more than 10 years ago and this probably explains why it is a little bit outdated and difficult to find. But, we are still reading Robert Byron's "The Road to Oxiana", so that wouldn't be a problem. SS has planned a long trip up to the sources of the White Nile (the longer one) and gets there traveling through Egypt, Sudan and Uganda. He is taking along a girlfriend which is beatiful and proficient in Arabic (who could ask for more?). The trip is "on the rode", so felucas, barges, trains, and lorries are used and planes are reserved only for otherwise unbridgable tracts.
The stile is diaristic in the best travelogue tradition and langue is rich and satisfying.
The Egyptian part of the trip is easy-going and somehow gives a vision of the country that unfortunately is not true anymore. I visited Egypt once in 1976 and again with my children two years ago and witnessed a complete revolution of customs, habits, attitudes and whatever else. Mass tourism has completely changed all the habits SS describes and tourism security problems condition every aspet of the visit to this beatiful country. Getting back to the book, one can feel the juvenile enthusiasm of this couple and their way of tackling logistic problems. I was a little disappointed for SS's scarce historical preparation, but a picture drawn by a non prejudicial mind is refreshing.
Sudan today is practically unapproachable or anyway not recommended for tourists. Some of this attitude was already present at the time. This part of the book is more interesting because a greater political and historical background is analyzed. But the best part is that on Uganda, here we can really "feel" the political and human situation and appreciate SS's intuitions of what was going to come up. The descriptions of the people and of situations are so true. My brother is doing voluntary work for the Church in Uganda and his descriptions are exactly the same.
The unity of the book is evidently the Nile and maybe a more detailed idrological description would have helped to understand the economy of these three african countries.
I intensely enjoyed the reading and I found the book a little less cynical than "The Empire" (which by the way is one of the defects of this last work). Ageing is hard on anyone! Read it, if you can find it.

Editorial Review:

Stanley Stewart describes his journey through Egypt, Sudan and Uganda to the source of the great river Nile. Taking him from Nile Delta to the Mountains of the Moon, the trip was arduous, colourful, funny and sometimes dangerous.
