Most comprehensive book on southern Africa 5 out of 5 stars.
41 of 42 people found this review helpful.

This book is full of interesting and pertinent travel information; it is a MUST for anyone interested in game-viewing and travelling in southern Africa. The author gives best times to travel depending on what you want to see, and for each country, lists brief history/present politics, places to stay--easily accessible to remote--and how to get there and what you may see. He also gives a comprehensive packing list, medical info, and tips on game viewing. Out of the 4 books I bought on southern Africa, this is the one I referred to most often. This book, coupled with The Kingdon Field Guide to African Mammals, is an invaluable southern Africa traveller's necessity.

Editorial Review:

A comprehensive guide to the geography, culture, natural history, and adventure opportunities in the eight countries that make up the southern portion of the African continent. Includes appendices of safari tour operators and conservation groups. An essential tool for everyone planning a trip to this spectacular and still unspoiled part of the world. Bibliography. Photos.

Beautiful book about Zimbabwe 4 out of 5 stars.

I have never been in Africa and have never read any of the books about the continent except for Nadine Gordiner's fiction. While I loved the begginning of the book, the later parts become a bit sloppy and at time impatient in terms of writing style. The observations, however, about the country of Zimbabwe over the decades, and in the time after declaration of independence are amazing. One is able to follow up on lives of writer's old friends, new people she meets on her trips, amazing animals, plants and food. I have learned a lot about country , it's people and customs, racism, reverse racism, sexism, deseases and corruption a new country is struggling with. Highly recommended read for anyone interested in learning more about this amazing country and African continent.

An Unsure Joy 4 out of 5 stars.

This was the only non-travel guide about Africa in my local library branch when I got back from 8 months in East Africa, so I picked it up. Certainly a very interesting picture of the slow death of British colonialism, despite Zimbabwean independence in 1980. And the successive trips provide a living view of changing attitudes and opinions, both of European expatriates and Nationals. Her inner dialogue of changes, good and bad (both very grey categories), is very informative as well.

That said, there is only a loose thread of continuing story that flows through the entire text. Granted, she's documenting her travels, but it seems a bit more perspective (or a more involved editor) could have helped give the book a bit more flow. I'd recommend it quickly to those interested in an authentic look at Africa, but probably not for those looking for a casual read during lunch breaks.

Editorial Review:

A highly personal story of the eminent British writer returning to her African roots that is "brilliant . . . [and] captures the contradictions of a young country."--New York Times Book Review

Adams 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderfully concise reference book. The book offers "at a glance" facts which give a quick overview as well as text synopsis of the people, economy & land and history & politics. Each contry is represented with at least one map, most also offer scenic pictures, and population & ethnic group pie charts. To be complete, the book begins with facts, pictures and graphs about the solar system, the earth, continents, volcanoes, lakes, population, etc. Of course, there are also detailed maps of the world and each continent.

Our family has found this book usefull for writing school reports, planning vacations, and just enjoying learning more about the world. It's a very complete book I recommend for every household library.

Editorial Review:

The heart of this atlas is a 280-page gazetteer of the countries of the world, with an overview of maps, text, photos, flags, charts, and graphs touching on the history, politics, land, economy, and people of each country. But the extras are good, too, with sections on the universe, the world's longest rivers, highest mountains, most populous countries, and more. These information tables are followed by 16 pages of beautiful maps, offering a view of the world's geography, topography, and political divisions. More than just a collection of maps, The World: Afghanistan to Zimbabwe provides a picture of the countries and natural forces that compose our world.

You Just Can't Get Lost With This One... 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Swaney's guide to Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Namibia is the best on the bookstore shelf. The level of detail is superb, from major cities to rural villages. She should consider herself more a regional geographer, as her detail concerning things like history, climate, people, and place are akin to that of one! All this and she manages to fit in the best deals on lodging, food, and travel sites, not to mention important info concerning safety and hazards associated with travel. I used this book extensively during my travels throughout last year, when I lived in Windhoek. Indeed, you can find no better than this- and the information is as good or better than what the locals give! I once had the opportunity to meet her at a hostel in Windhoek, when I was doing some academic research there, and never had the chance to tell her how much I praise this guide!

Editorial Review:

Featuring multi-lingual information on getting around (French, German, Spanish and Japanese), the references in this travel atlas correspond with "Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia: a Travel Survival Kit".
