June 4 out of 5 stars.

There aren't many travel books available with info on Mauritius. I've looked at all I could get my hands on and the Globetrotter Travel Guide on Mauritius with the pull-out Travel Map is by far the best. The books is loaded with heaps of useful information for first time travellers to Mauritius with tips for visitors, places to stay and eat, attractions and regional profiles. The best part was the map giving more detail of the whole island as well as the major regional towns on the island. The other travel books fell short in this area.

Editorial Review:

The highly successful "Globetrotter Travel Series", which includes Travel Guides, Travel Maps, Road Atlases, Best Of Pocket Guides and In Your Pocket Language Guides, presently covers more than 90 destinations worldwide. The Packs are excellent value, including both a guidebook and a softcover version of the fold-out Globetrotter map of the region, in a printed plastic wallet. The handy pocket-size guide is packed with useful information, tips and recommendations, accompanied by colour photographs, charts and maps for the first-time traveller who wants to experience the major highlights that Mauritius has to offer. The fold-out map of Mauritius is ideal for tourists and visitors.

Outstanding Guidebook 5 out of 5 stars.

I used an earlier edition of this book on a trip in 1996, in which I visited the Seychelles, Mauritius, and Reunion. I was travelling independently (not as part of a package tour) and the book helped in many ways to make my trip a great one. It provides a wealth of information about hotels and restaurants, island culture, and places and things to see on the islands. If you can only visit one of these three islands, I would recommend the Seychelles, which offer some of the finest tropical scenery I have ever seen. One advantage of Mauritius for the budget-minded traveler is that it is considerably less expensive than the Seychelles.

Editorial Review:

Searching for a tropical island paradise, rich in culture, unashamedly friendly and proudly unique? Mauritius, Réunion and Seychelles have it all. Whether you want to laze on a secluded beach, trek through cirques and volcanoes or snorkel in a peaceful lagoon, this guidebook points the way.

  • 45 detailed maps, including Réunion hiking maps
  • special section on diving and snorkeling in the Indian Ocean
  • accommodation options, including mountain gîtes and beach resorts, for every budget
  • comprehensive information on local cultures, architecture and cuisine
  • handy phrases in French and Creole

Editorial Review:

Paul et Virginie (1787), an adolescent love story set in an exotic Indian Ocean island, was one of the literary sensations of the age. Telling of a passion both chaste and doomed, the novel combined fashionable sentimentality with an evocatively tropical setting. It was a huge critical and commercial success in France and abroad, a precursor of the Romantic movement.

The novel's author, Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, had previously spent 28 months in the French colony of Ile de France (now Mauritius) in 1778-80. This extended exposure to the island not only inspired Paul et Virginie, but also led to one of the period's fullest and most fascinating accounts of a colonial society and its daily life. First published in 1773, Voyage à L'Isle de France is now available in this newly translated and annotated edition-Journey to Mauritius.

Structured into a series of letters, Bernardin's survey of Mauritius includes a detailed description of the island's geography, flora, and fauna. Describing the closed nature of colonial society, he also provides a chilling picture of the cruelties of plantation life and slavery. Mixing indignation with a lyrical appreciation of the island's beauty, Bernardin provides us with one of the earliest examples of a walking guide as he details Mauritius' sights and landscapes. From the disappearance of the dodo to the mosaic of multiracial Port Louis little escapes the author's curious gaze.

An introduction sets this travel account in its historical context, discussing Bernardin's life and ideas. It also explores its contribution to travel writing and its relevance to modern-day Mauritius. Illustrated with period engravings, Journey to Mauritius will be of interest to those visiting the island as well as students of anti-slavery movement, colonialism, and travel writing.

Good for the long-term tourist 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I have found that Culture Shock: Mauritius is a great resource for those visitors to Mauritius who are actually living in the country, rather than just visiting the touristy sites. There are very important local customs and traditions to be aware of that are discussed in detail in this book that are only skimmed over in the common tourist guides. While the other guidebooks help you find your way to the beach and which hotels to stay in, Culture Shock goes a great deal further in dealing with people. Mauritians have a great deal to offer in their multiculturalism, but without a book like Culture Shock, it may be difficult to understand how the cultures come together. The book gives advice for numerous social and business situations, as well as advice for living and getting around the country. In general the book has been fairly easy to read -- enjoyable and interesting before arriving to Mauritius, and helpful as a reference and to re-read after settling on the island.

I have felt that there are a few things the book is a bit in lacking -- it could include a bit more of the touristy options and in some parts seems a few years outdated, but in general the advice has proved very helpful, in very different situations. Roselin Lum has done a good job of balancing the different ethnic groups, and explaining their places within the country. Her book, though best for people who plan to stay significant time periods in Mauritius, would also be extremely useful for a short-term visitor who wants to understand more about the people they will meet. For a country known for its beaches, Mauritius has a lot to offer due to its multicultural composition. Lum's book lays a significant groundwork for making lasting contacts while in Mauritius.

Editorial Review:

You'll never feel intimidated and awkward about the customs and etiquette of another country again. With the insights provided in this CULTURE SHOCK! Guide, you'll learn to see beyond the stereotypes and misinformation that often precede a visit to a foreign land. Whether you plan to stay for a week or for a year, you'll benefit from such topics as understanding the rules of driving and monetary systems, religious practices and making friends. There are tips on political traditions, building business relationships, and the particular intricacies of setting up a home or office. Great for the business traveler, the foreign exchange student, or the tourist who makes a sincere attempt to cross the bridge into a new and exciting culture.

"The Indian Ocean" a quick tour of the Eastern Islands 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The book is filled with beautiful photographs, and the text borders on poetry--clearly a labor of love by the author and photographers. An excellent book for a quick overview of the islands. There is a section on each island,, with descriptions of its physical and cultural features. Text and photographs tend to weigh more heavily on the cultural. There is even a section with useful information for tourists. I would have liked to see and read more about the unique animals of these islands.

Editorial Review:

A guide to the Indian Ocean with both text and photographs.
