The only book we used... 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

We bought 3 books and always seemed to rely on this one. Mr Kay gives great info on restaurants and hidden lodgings, which are the 2 most important topics for us. We actually stayed in one place that he labeled "hidden" and he was right! We could not find the entrance and when we did they were not open to the public, but they decided to let us stay and we were the only guests for a week. No other guide book listed this hidden lodging. Mr. Kay has a more personal approach and gives great descriptions, which the other guide books lack. And as far as not giving exact prices, it's useless to do so as these things change so much anyway. All you need to know is this: you stay in a big hotel where all the other tourists stay you will pay big money for not so much, if you venture out to where the real people live, you pay less and get better service, food, and memories.

Editorial Review:

Hidden Tahiti guides readers to surprisingly chic dining spots in Papeete as well as the most scenic beaches and the best spots for enjoying a tropical drink while watching the sunset. Includes recommendations for lodging choices from 36 of the world's top resorts to 218 local options, including beach bungalow hotels. Surveys tons of outdoor fun including 74 dive sites, 30 surfing beaches, and 41 hiking trails

Exciting sailing adventure 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

In 1938 Eric Newby was eighteen years old. He left a dead end job with an advertising agency in London and signed as an apprentice seaman on the four-masted sailing ship Moshulu for a trip to bring back a shipload of grain from Australia. Moshulu was one of a dozen sailing ships still engaged in the grain trade and the 1938 trip was destined to be the last of the merchant sailing era.

Newby is undeservedly less well known than other writers who have imitated him. His books, "A Small Place in Italy, "On the Shores of the Mediterranean" and "The Big Red Train Ride" have been imitated by other authors. His writing style is spare and matter-of-fact; he doesn't try to impress the reader with overblown prose instead letting the facts speak for themselves without florid editorial comment.

There's a funny account a trick played by the Belfast stevedores on the sailors of Moshulu. Among the tons of rocks loaded into the hold were two dead dogs. The decomposing dog carcasses fill the ship's hold with an overpowering odor that plagues the men as they dump out the ballast and load the grain months later off the shore of Adelaide.

The Last Grain Race goes into great detail describing the operation of a sailing ship, complete with obscure jargon names for the sails and rigging. Newby seems to have been working too hard on the trip to completely enjoy and appreciate it. The books gives a glimpse at a lost world of merchant sailing ships and the quiet life of sailors at sea, now exchanged for sparsely manned giant container ships crossing vast oceans in a matter of days.

Moshulu returns to Queenstown, Ireland on June 10, 1939 after a pace-setting 91-day passage by war of Cape Horn. It had taken 8 months for a round-trip in which Moshulu brought 4,875 tons of grain from Australia to Ireland. Newby leaves the ship a full-fledged Ordinary Seaman. World War II will start in a few months and obliterate the peaceful world of merchant sailing ships.

Editorial Review:

At the age of 18, Eric Newby signed on as an apprentice on the four-masted sailing ship Moshulu of the Erikson line for the round trip from Europe to Australia and back, outwards by way of the Cape of Good Hope and round Cape Horn. This was to be an historic voyage, a dramatic personal adventure.

The Next Best Thing to Being in Bali 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I grew up in California, and continue to love the scenary and the people there. I thought it was the best place on earth, until I made it to Hawaii. Wow! Do I love Hawaii! I was convinced it, too, was the greatest, until I arrived in Tahiti. Now there's a really awesome place!! When I got back, I spoke with my cousin, the world traveler. She said, "You'll really love Bali, it's much more beautiful than Tahiti." So far, I haven't been able to test her views, but this book certainly helped me to see the many beauties of Bali and the neighboring island of Lombok (which she didn't tell me about).

The scenery, animals, arts, temples, crafts, costumes, and dance are vivid, colorful, intricate, and involved. This guide to the two islands features over 700 color photographs that give you a sense of this beauty in very many ways. Even the smallest images are crisp and distinct.

The book is also a good size to slip into a pocket while traveling, so that you don't have to be burdened with excess weight or bulk. That will help, because this guide has many details of streets, restaurants, and the insides of temples that you will wish to refer to when you are in Bali or Lombok.

This guide has the details of all of the festivals on the two islands, which are reportedly a high point of any visit there. You also get lots of detail on local history and traditions (which will be unfamiliar to many in the United States).

The book breaks the two islands into regions so you can get a flavor of how being in one area compares to another. For example, you can go as an eco-tourist, as a cultural tourist, a scuba tourist, or a plain old beach tourist (but there is good surf for those who like surfing and wind surfing). Bali offers lots of variety for those with different tastes and preferences, and the guide makes it clear how to plan for each. Golf has even made its way to Bali.

I was also glad to see that the book contained many website addresses to obtain additional information.

I cannot report on the accuracy of what is here, because I have not been to Bali. On the other hand, the information made sense in terms of what I know about other islands, and Hindu and Moslem countries.

This guide is so rich in photographs and detail that I can have quite a few "trips" just by reviewing the material here. So even if I don't make it to Bali for a few more years, I will have enjoyed some of the wonders of this wonderful island. I hope you will have the same opportunity.

After you finish enjoying this delightful guide, I suggest that you think about where else you know little about and might like to see. If your time and budget do not permit much travel, you could perhaps use these DK Eyewitness Travel Guides to provide pleasant diversions in the meantime. Then, when you are ready to go to a new place, you'll have an informed view of which one to pick.

Grasp the potential all around you, with all of your senses!

Editorial Review:

The guide that shows you what other travel books only tell you! Besides being one of the top ten honeymoon destinations in the world, Bali has been called the "Best Island in the World." Previously known for attracting backpackers, the island now caters to more sophisticated travelers and DK's Eyewitness Travel Guide: Bali & Lombok puts everything at your fingertips. Experience the world's largest collection of Balinese art at the Bali Museum in Denpasar, the sacred Pura Luhur Uluwatu, exotic wildlife at the Bali Bird Park, the royal palace at Taman Gili, and the temple at Taman Ayun. Highlights in Lombok include: the Taman Naional Gunung Rinjani, the beach resorts at Senggigi, and the Mayura Water Palace. With over 700 full-color photographs and street-by-street maps of Kuta, Ubud, Singaraja, this guide shows why Bali and Lombok are becoming increasingly popular holiday destinations for all types of tourists.

Best resource for Fiji travel! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

We've been talking about going to Fiji for years, and have looked at other books, but this book trumps them all. It's very thorough, with excellent descriptions that make us wish we could pack our bags and go today. Author David Stanley obviously loves Fiji, and his passion comes through in his writing. We also appreciate the way he doesn't sugar coat the less than perfect. This seems like a book you can really trust. And the history sprinkled throughout (great stories of Capt. Bligh, for instance), the interesting boxes full of fun information, and the very useable maps make it easy to get educated in all things Fijian. We also love the beginning section with beautiful color photography. It would be nice if all photos could be in color, but we'd happily trade the excellent info in the book for color pictures.

This book provided us with our new dream adventure vacation: A stay on the Yasawa Islands, where there are no motorized land vehicles or roads. You can stay in a thatched "bure" and make a vacation exploring the island chain via a catamaran line that offers a kind of "Eurail Pass" for island hoppers. Who knew such a place still existed?!

Editorial Review:

South Pacific expert and veteran travel writer David Stanley knows the best way to experience Fiji, from making waves at one of the world’s premiere diving spots to getting away from it all in lesser-known villages. Stanley provides great trip ideas like Best of Fiji, Island-Hopping, and Diving in Fiji. Packed with information on dining, transportation, and accommodations, Moon Fiji has lots of options for a range of travel budgets. Every Moon guidebook includes recommendations for must-see sights and many regional, area, and city-centered maps. Complete with details on the best beaches and tips on prolonging a trip to the islands, Moon Fiji gives travelers the tools they need to create a more personal and memorable experience. With expert writers, first-rate strategic advice, and an essential dose of humor, Moon guidebooks are the cure for the common trip.

OK, but not a great book... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I've been to NZ once; returning there in couple of months because I like it SO much. Bought this book as am toying with permanently relocating to NZ; but so far, have to say this book has not met my high expectations of being helpful. A lot of data but not presented in a fashion to be chronologically useful in one's formulating a plan of attack on HOW to get there (given all the bureaucracy one must endure and prevail thru, to emigrate to NZ). Maybe by time I finish the book I'll change my mind? but problem is, I'm finding myself less and less motivated to continue reading it...

Editorial Review:

It is packed with vital information and insider tips to help minimize culture shock and reduce the newcomers' rookie period to a minimum. Living and Working in New Zealand is essential reading for anyone planning to spend an extended period in New Zealand.
