Editorial Review:

For the many thousands of visitors heading to Australia for the 2000 Olympics, and the millions of armchair travelers who will tune into the Olympics, this collection of stories will captivate and enchant those fascinated by the land down under. From outback to rain forest, Great Barrier Reef to the Red Center, Australia offers a chance for adventure beyond your wildest dreams. Whether it's biking across the Nullarbor Plateau, drifting through a billibong searching for crocs, surfing the big one, or walking a Songline, you will find it in OZ, and in this collection of true and fascinating stories that reveal the many facets of Australia. Most people have a particular set image of Australia, such as the Opera House or Ayers Rock, yet these famous icons do little justice to the abundance of Australia's natural treasures and its cultural diversity. Australia offers a wealth of travel experiences, from the drama of the Outback and the spectacle of the Great Barrier Reef to the cosmopolitanism of Sydney. Notable authors include Paul Theroux, Robyn Davidson, Tim Cahill, Bruce Chatwin, Robert Hughes, Tony Horwitz, Jill Ker Conway, Pico Iyer, Ronald Wright, and more.

Editorial Review:

Polly Evans was a woman with a mission. Before the traditional New Zealand male hung up his sheep shears for good, Polly wanted to see this vanishing species with her own eyes. Venturing into the land of giant kauri trees and smaller kiwi birds, she explores the country once inhabited by fierce Maori who carved their enemies’ bones into cutlery, bushwhacking pioneers, and gold miners who lit their pipes with banknotes—and comes face-to-face with their surprisingly tame descendants. So what had become of the mighty Kiwi warrior?

As Polly tears through the countryside at seventy-five miles an hour, she attempts to solve this mystery while pub-crawling in Hokitika, scaling the Southern Alps, and enduring a hair-raising stay in a mining town where the earth has been known to swallow houses whole. And as she chronicles the thrills and travails of her extraordinary odyssey, Polly’s search for the elusive Kiwi comes full circle—teaching her some hilarious and surprising lessons about motorcycles, modern civilization, and men.

Colorful, informative travel tips but lack of maps/direction 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is a colorful book with lots of pictures about New Zealand. Its first couple of chapters include the history and culture of New Zealand are especially interesting. They were very useful for visitors to the Kiwi country. However, its lack of large street maps, area maps and detail route maps are disappointing as well as annoying. Although the front cover has an overview map of both the north & south island, I think it will improve the ease of reading and research if various level of district maps and street maps are provided, especially when a traveller was deciding which hotel/motel to book reservations and how far he/she needs to drive from one scenic spot to the next. Without this, it is disasterous for travel planning. Other things to include will be web sites for driving directions such as www.wises.co.nz etc. For a backpack traveller like me, I will even be willing to pay more if road maps/ street map of Auckland are included with the book (which some of the publishers are already doing).

Editorial Review:

What should have been a straightforward five-week journey, crossing two oceans, passing through the Panama canal, and taking in the islands of the South Pacific en route, turns into an epic journey of rough seas, clashing personalities, and crises in the ship’s engine room. And when the ship receives an SOS from a yacht with a heart attack victim on board, it’s all hands on deck for a daring sea rescue. With various delays and detours, five weeks turns into six, then seven, then eight—and while the other passengers are quietly going mad with frustration, Josie develops unusual strategies to cope with the hours of potentially endless tedium on board. As the journey progresses and the ship sails from the freezing seas of the north to the hot and steamy south, so the atmosphere on board approaches boiling point. Safety issues, personal disputes, and unreasonable delays are top of the agenda for the passengers. Will they actually reach New Zealand before someone jumps ship, or is pushed?

handy size, full of info 5 out of 5 stars.

I have the big name guides like Lonely Planet, and they are very informative, but they seem to be pointing me toward where to find every other American tourist in the country. This book is different- It tells me how to get around- breaks it down into method of travel: car rental, rail, fairy, public transportation and backpacking (tramping). This book has schedules and routs for excursions which I have confirmed are current, and even includes walking route tours around towns. I find lots of information in each of the guide books I have picked. I am feeling well prepared for my trip and once I get back I can tell you for sure which guide was most helpful, but based on the information I have gotten from this book I am sure it will be something I rely on to live out my dream for this trip to New Zealand! If not your ONLY guide, it's a great compliment to any guide.

Editorial Review:

Independent Travellers New Zealand is a route-based budget travel guide that selects the best public transport routes to follow, cities to visit, and wilderness areas to explore, from the capital Wellington and the bubbling waters and mud pools of Rotorua to the stunning Fiordland National Park, historic Maori sites, and some of the world's finest scenery. Drawing on the Thomas Cook Overseas Timetable for train and bus journeys and offering driving tour outlines, it describes popular routes with practical travel timings, and suggests plenty of detours and alternative destinations. The free mini weblinks CD accompanying the guide is a practical and fun-to-use resource, giving access to a wide range of the very best New Zealand Web sites.

I just received this as a gift. It's filled with some amazing shots all over New Zealand and some nearby islands. Some of the photos do not even look real they are so picture perfect. I love his use of light in the photos as well. Only thing better will be getting to go there. :-)

Stunning Images!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I am an amateur photographer who just returned from an extended vacation in New Zealand. I spent a lot of time looking for the perfect scenic picture book to take home as a souviner, and I must say that this one was absolutely the best! Andris Apse is an amazing photographer - his images of the New Zealand country and coastal areas are incredibly well composed. The lighting, the scope, the sheer beauty of it all..... it's difficult to put into words. The price for this title in the US is well worth it. If you are able, definitely get your hands on a copy. And if you want to have a look at more of his stuff, visit his website.

Even if you've never been to New Zealand, I highly recommend this title as a thoroughly enjoyable work of art!

Editorial Review:

A collection of over 100 photographs of New Zealand and its sub-Antarctic islands by Andris Apse, one of the country's most successful and innovative landscape photographers. With an introductory essay by Andy Dennis.

Indispensable Guide for New Zealand 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

We brought 3 guides for 6 weeks in New Zealand - Rough Guide, Lonely Planet and Eye Witness. Soon we were only consulting Rough Guide - for lodging, meals and places to visit. The others stayed in the trunk of the car. Particularly good were the author's distillations of what was most important to see. While at Orakei Korako to see an example of geothermal activity, we encountered a group of U.S. geologists who had chosen to tour only O.K. after a mining conference in Australia. It was great to have contact numbers for rafting companies or wildlife spots such as Royal Albatross Center or Penguin Place so we could easily schedule tours to those places well in advance of arriving in the vicinty. Staying in Arrowtown rather than Queenstown or spending several days in Wanaka would not have occurred to us except for the Rough Guide's Advice. Even 6 weeks in New Zealand isn't enough for that country - we hope to use a future Rough Guide for our next trip.

Editorial Review:

The Rough Guide to New Zealand is the essential guidebook to this spectacular adventure destination. A fully comprehensive account, the guide incorporates a country full of magnificent scenery, craggy coastlines, sweeping beaches, primeval forests, snow-capped alpine mountains, bubbling volcanic pools, fast-flowing rivers and glacier-fed lakes. This jam-packed guide contains expert coverage, catering for every traveller, from the country rambler to the adventure-seeking junky to the new breed of Lord of the Rings enthusiasts. The guide also includes significant historical and cultural information, provides detailed town maps and information about the country’s buzzing nightlife, even managing to find time to teach the reader how to do the world-famous haka!

Yes, I am a Kiwi [native New Zealander]and have found this book extremely valuable for planning a tour around both islands. I could find out all the information, but why reinvent the wheel?? It is all laid on here..including an insight into our customs and language.

In brief..... you want to bike around NZ??? GET THIS BOOK!!

Very useful 5 out of 5 stars.

In February '97 me, my bike, and this book covered 1300 miles of New Zealand. I used this book extensively to plan my route by mixing & matching the routes covered in the book. obtw, in New Zealand you don't need a map, you only have a couple of roads to choose from and this book covers just about everything you need. I highly recommend it and appreciate the effort Bruce put into the book.

get this book and take off for an adventure. 4 out of 5 stars.

definitely a must for a n.z. bound cycling adventure. this book keeps it all simple and clear without what you don't need. i cycled 4100km in n.z. by mixing and matching routes from the book and found it very useful. the only down side is the not very convenient format and the lack of good route maps which is not a big deal altogether. good luck.
