Like having a local with you on vacation! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

We had never been to the northwest before and wanted to get the most out of our first trip. This guide was like having a local with us on the trip. We were able to get to the numerous falls, rapids, windsurfing areas and hikes without wandering around. We stayed in a great hotel that was reported on and picked from the recommended restaurants. The book was well worn when we got home. I highly recommend it.

Wonderful Guidebook! 5 out of 5 stars.

I am making a long journey next year that will include the Columbia Gorge and this book really helps define the areas I wish to see. It has been really helpful in the lodging as well as the parks and hiking. I am a photographer and plan on taking numerous images on this trip, so I like to know well ahead of time what I will be seeing. I highly recommend this guidebook to those that visit this area.

Editorial Review:

This new guide from the award-winning Moon Handbooks series features an intimate look at one of the lesser-known natural wonders of the U.S., with information on Portland, the formation of the gorge, the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, outdoor activities, and much more.

Editorial Review:

Considered North America's most "European" city, Montréal is known for its culture, sophisticated population and its amazing architectural history. The latest title in the hugely popular Then and Now series takes readers to Québec's charming capital city, Montréal, for an amazing past and present tour which includes the following.

• A rich historical overview written by Alan Hustak (a journalist for the Montréal Gazette) describes Montréal's development from a fur trading outpost on the banks of the St. Lawrence River to its present incarnation as the business and cultural center of Canada.

• Originally named Ville-Marie, the settlement became known as Mont Royal, after the tallest of the hills overlooking the river valley. Readers will marvel at how much this modern metropolis has evolved in its history.

• Dozens of photographs show how some of Montréal's most important landmarks looked long ago and how they look today.

• Fascinating side-by-side then-and-now images of popular destinations like the Windsor Hotel, St. Ann's Market, Christ Church Cathedral, and Montréal Harbor showcase Montréal's finest architecture and views.

Though much has changed since the city was first settled in the 17th century, readers will agree that Montréal's charm will never fade.

A remarkably good book for Quebec City; very good for Montreal 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

We've used Montreal and Quebec City (Eyewitness Top Ten Travel Guides) very successfully in Montreal, which is a much larger city than Quebec City and where the photographs and maps are very handy indeed. We read through the sections of the Dummies for Montreal and consider it a useful and interesting, but not an essential, guide for a visit there.

However, Dummies really shone during a recent trip to Quebec City. Our concierge at the Hilton praised the book, and it was a great ice breaker meeting folks in shops, museums and restaurants. The lack of maps and photographs are not a serious problem given the concentrated nature of the city, and the excellent maps, which are available free everywhere. The text and especially the top ten lists of sights and activities were really excellent.

Whatever guide book you use, we suggest you start out at the visitor's center near Château Frontenac, a wonderful Victorian pile in the heart of the city. [Meals or just drinks are very reasonable there, and the views of the river are extraordinary.] The visitor's center has tons of literature, including great maps, tour information, and over 500 brochures on attractions.

Next door lies the essential Musee du Fort. This is a homemade diorama that allows you to see the geography of Quebec City. The diorama is well done, albeit cryptic on some details, but with six major attacks covered in a half hour allowances must be made. It concentrates on the six military campaigns against the city (Wolff and Montcalm on the Plains of Abraham was the fourth, and the attack during the American Revolution was the sixth). Nonetheless, even people with little interest in warfare will learn a great deal about the city and how to get around.

There was an early blizzard when we visited and I spent a day reading some very interesting books obtained at the Musee du Fort, including a very nice inexpensive picture book (the ones on offer at the museums are cheaper and better than those on offer at news stands and book stores):

Canada Traveller's History by by Robert Bothwell.

A Short History of Quebec by John Alexander Dickinson.

The French in North America 1500-1783 W.J. Eccles.

The Illustrated History of Canada by Craig Brown.

La Nouvelle France: The Making of French Canada--A Cultural History by Peter N. Moogk.

And for another rainy/snowy day, the massive Champlain's Dream by David Hackett Fischer.

(I had packed Why I Hate Canadians by Will Ferguson, a tongue in check "attack" especially on the culture shock of Americans dealing with French Canadians.)

In the event, we had a day and a half of reading and two and a half days of touring this endlessly fascinating city. Dummies added a real depth of richness to the visit.

Streetwise Toronto Map - Laminated City Center Street Map of Toronto, Canada - Folding pocket size travel map with integrated subway & trolley bus lines & stations

This map covers the following areas:
Main Toronto Street Map 1:20,000
Toronto Metropolitan Area Map 1:145,000
Downtown Toronto Map 1:18,000

Toronto is a city that has successfully intermingled big urban life with intimate individual experience. What does that mean? Well it means that you find houses, not just high rise condos, in the middle of the city. Lots of two or three story houses in eclectic designs on tree lined streets; something you would expect to find in a pleasant suburb, but not in a big city. It means that while you can find the big box retailers, most shopping is found at small individually owned retailers who specialize in what they’re selling. It means that the crime rate is lower than Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Hartford, Connecticut. It means that the grey granite buildings of the University of Toronto in the center of town bestow a collegiate atmosphere to the heart of the city. It means that there is a civility that extends to everyday encounters. That’s also something you don’t necessarily find in a big city.

But don’t be fooled into thinking this is a small town. It is a city and the most prominent city in the nation. This is the financial center of Canada. The two national newspapers and the newspaper with the highest circulation are based here: The Globe and Mail, The National Post and The Toronto Star. This is home to 50 dance companies, 6 opera companies, 5 professional sports teams, 2 symphonies and the tallest building in the world (the CN Tower over 553 meters high). This is the home of Harlequin, the largest and most prolific Romance publisher in the world. Toronto is the third largest English speaking theatre community in the world after London and New York. It’s the fifth largest city in North America after Mexico City, New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. This is no small town.

Getting around Toronto is easy if you have the STREETWISE® Toronto city map. This map of Toronto covers the core of the city from Toronto Inner Harbour on Lake Ontario to Eglington Avenue in the north, from Bathurst to Bayview. All streets, cultural sites, government buildings, education, hospitals, hotels, parks, places of interest, and shopping are indexed and highlighted on the Toronto map. Transportation such as the train depot, Union Station, and subway stops are clearly indicated. A separate inset of the subway and rapid transit lines is included. The Toronto Area map stretches from Mississauga to Pickering and up to Richmond Hill. All major highways and thoroughfares are included. The index for this area map of Toronto lists streets, government sites, airports, educational sites, parks, and places of interest such as the Metropolitan Zoo in Scarborough. A visit here makes a lasting impression, especially if you go with friends for the day.

Our pocket size map of Toronto is laminated for durability and accordion folding for effortless use. quebecois? 1 out of 5 stars.
14 of 27 people found this review helpful.

Well, I can't say much about the choice of vocabulary, but I bought Quebecois and not French, and I received something that differed from a short French dictionary only in some Canadianisms. What about the pronunciation? Please do correct me, but isn't oi in Quebec waw, not wah/war. What about palatalization of t (so that moitie is not mou-a-ti-e but rather mou-o-tsi).

Editorial Review:

Celebrating our 20th classic back in print, the Western Canadian Classics series is designed to keep the best western Canadian history, biography, and other works available in attractive and affordable editions. These popular and bestselling books are selected for their quality, enduring appeal, and importance to an understanding of our past. From the author of the classic North to Cree Lake, Arthur Karras, Face the North Wind is the compelling true story of cousins Fred Darbyshire and Ed Theriau, who spent almost five decades, from 1924 to 1975, trapping and living off the land in northern Saskatchewan. Working an area roughly defined by Cree, Wollaston, and Reindeer Lakes, Fred and Ed evolved from innocent greenhorns to expert trappers at a time when modern conveniences were unheard of in that part of the country. Intertwined with the two men_s experiences are gripping accounts of the annual Hudson_s Bay Company fur brigades along the Churchill River, encounters with wolves, trappers_ lore, and exciting tales of memorable fur, game, and fish catches.

Choice of Two 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I was looking for a good ski guide and after much research I narrowed my choice down to two: this one and The Great Skiing & Snowboarding Guide 2007. After having purchased and used both guides I can recommend both. But if you are only buying one, then your choice should be around WHERE you are planning to ski.

This guide has no information on resorts outside North America (obviously), but it does provide richer information and insights than the Great guide. It provides better insights on food and accommodation as well as some views on the best runs - which I found to be very helpful and accurate. It doesn't have the glossy trail maps - although these days they can be found on-line for most resorts.

The Great guide has reviews of all the major resorts in North America and Europe (although it has very little on other countries such as NZ, Chile, Japan etc). A bonus is glossy colour trail maps of all the resorts they cover in detail. It also has lots of ad's and details for travel agents, hotels and the like if you are looking for that information.

In Summary: if you are "going global" or want the glossy trail maps - go with the Great guide. If you are sticking to North America then I found Leocha's to be more insightful. [Review repeated under Great Guide]

Editorial Review:

Leocha's Ski Snowboard America (20th Edition) is a complete guidebook that provides the information to make reservations and plans. The writers let skiers know whether the resort is a cluster of condominiums clinging to a steep slope or a traditional mountain village exuding old-world atmosphere and whether they should pack a sequined gown or simply bluejeans for the nightlife. It includes expanded up-to-date coverage of more than 100 resorts in the U.S., Canada and South America.

A tragic topic, an impressive writer 4 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

A sad book. High Latitudes focuses on the disintegrating culture of North Canadian Natives. Much of the book is transcription of the natives in their own words and gives excellent insight into their plight. An overriding theme of the book is the devastating effect bureaucratic decisions of government and big business has had on these Inuits (Eskimos) and others.

This wasn't the adventure story I was expecting from Farley Mowat like "People of the Deer" in which he lived with an arctic community. This trip, taken in 1966, he travels by plane. Still none the less an adventure, he keenly describes a variety of northern communities including: Churchill ("a ...collection of mostly wooden structures between taiga and open tundra"), Povungnituk (the place that stinks), Old Crow (where "people catch lots of rats, won't let you go hungry there"), and many others. In typical fashion, Farley Mowat creates a gripping pathos about past cultures and events never to return, and often includes rich historical background for places he explores.

If you're a Farley Mowat fan, I would rate this as important but not as engaging as some of his other books (I've read four others: "People of the Deer", "And No Birds Sang", "Never Cry Wolf", and "The Boat Who Wouldn't Float"). The book ends somewhat abruptly but he saves a great anecdote from the Yukon Territory for the end. A frustrating aspect about the events you read about in this book is that they took place in the sixties. I'd like to know how these settlements he visited have done since then. I'll probably never know.

Editorial Review:

High Latitudes chronicles the author’s journey across northern Canada in 1966. Engaging in what Margaret Atwood, in her introduction, calls "a salvation escapade," Mowat hoped to write a book based on his experiences that would debunk the then-current idea of the North as a playground for developers and polluters. Until now, that book remained unwritten. Mowat’s compelling blend of suspenseful storytelling and larger-than-life characters immerses readers in the Arctic, a place Mowat dubs a "bloody great wasteland." In a voice alternately filled with rage, humor, and pathos, Mowat seasons his story with photos, maps, and verbatim transcriptions of testimonies from northern peoples — Inuit and white — at a time when the old ways of life were disappearing.
