Editorial Review:

A favorite of cruise ship travelers and island vacationers, Best Dives' Snorkeling Adventures invites anyone with a mask and snorkel to share the magic of ocean exploration. The new third edition covers hundreds of fabulous snorkeling beaches– places where one might drift across a blitz of dazzling corals or the remains of an ancient shipwreck.

It also includes complete vacation planning suggestions with details on diver-friendly resorts near the best sites and special guided tours throughout the Caribbean, Australia's Whitsunday Islands, the Bahamas; Bermuda; Turks & Caicos; Belize; the Galapagos Islands, Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, the Florida Keys, Florida Springs and Hawaii.

Starfish Ratings from one to five grade each snorkeling site, whether it be coral reef and ship or plane wreck, for interesting marine life, visibility and water clarity.

Adventures within the new edition are included for every age, interest and skill level. They include island cruises, offbeat excursions such as the Galapagos islands, dolphin, stingray and manatee encounters, reef wildlife tours, ancient shipwrecks, the first snorkel-thru museum, snorkel-kayak trips and romantic sail-snorkel tours.

And it’s Dolphin Friendly. The authors have personally inspected the few dolphin swims included to make certain the dolphins were rescued from circuses or shows, are well cared for, enjoy interacting with people and would have otherwise been destroyed. No facilities that take dolphins from the wild are included.

Resorts for every budget include secluded hideaways with reef snorkeling off the beach or within walking distance. Also featured are campgrounds, and resorts with on-site water sport shops.

More than just a travel guide, "Snorkeling Adventures" offers first-aid tips for coral cuts and sea stings, a special chapter on sharks, procedures and an introduction to gear for newcomers. Maps, color and black and white photos, drawings, detailed topside directions and special dive-tour operators are covered as are select spots for children, novices and experienced open-water divers.

Editorial Review:

Canoe country's most up-to-date guide.

Located west of Lake Superior on the Canada-U.S. border and known to countless thousands of paddlers simply as "Canoe Country," Quetico Provincial Park is Ontario's second-largest wilderness park. It connects to the United States via the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, mainland America's largest protected tract of wilderness. The area receives over 200,000 visitors a year.

Kevin Callan is a renowned paddling personality, and his new book describes 10 of Quetico's best trips, plus five adventurous excursions to destinations just beyond the park's boundaries. Trips range from weekend recreational paddles to 10-day multi-lake loops, and there is something for every skill level. All route maps are original and up to date, correcting many of the common errors found in other publications.

One could spend a lifetime paddling the waters of Quetico Provincial Park, with its more than 600 lakes and five major rivers. And with an average portage length of only 435 yards, it's all about the paddling.

An experience in love and appreciation of life. 5 out of 5 stars.
56 of 57 people found this review helpful.

Would it not be interesting for each of us to express our point of view regarding all those experiences that brought us to a certain point in our lives. Tales of an Empty Cabin does just that. The cabin is actually a make shift structure somewhere in the northern reaches of Quebec, at a placed called Birch Lake (1928). This is where a man's life, like Saul of Tarsus, was transformed from trapper, guide, and forest ranger, to one of Canada's leading "environmentalists' and respector of animal life. Grey Owl, in contradistinction to most, was a real individualist, who took upon himself the task of challenging the 'status quo' in his day. Each chapter is a short story describing "life" in certain situations, conditions, and circumstances. It is a marvelous attempt at the sharing of one's perception of things. Grey Owl was a gifted observer and prolific writter. He was like an Olympic Athlete in that he worked, indefatigably, towards a goal; namely, depicting with great insight, a variety of activities so prevalent during his days in the north of Canada. He perfected his writting skills so well, that millions around the world recognized his abilities and talent. In fact, one of the stories (XIII), The Tree, was so popular it was published as a separate book. In his Epilogue he ends with this moving statement, "And the cabin won't be empty any more, nor the grove again so silent and deserted, while yet remains a solitary reader whose sympathy and kindly understanding brings Life to that memory-haunted valley in the hills, and awakens those others, who have dreamed and waited there so long." Grey Owl was a man who did his best to share his heart. This is a noble cause.

What a beautiful and informative book! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

We really have to thank our Canadian neighbo(u)rs for this one. I've just done a bit of research on the sugaring process, and I can say that this is the nicest book on the subject. It's informative -- not only about current practices, but also about the history and culture surrounding maple sugar and syrup. It can appeal to a wide audience, from children to adults, because of the simple way the information is arranged. But best of all - it's gorgeous! Every photo is in color. You get only a taste (!) of what's inside from the stunning cover, which depicts a variety of syrup bottles. Extra bonuses include the "Flavour wheel for maple products" and a variety of recipes. Helen and Scott Nearing's "The Maple Sugar Book" (1950, 1972, 2000) may be the classic reference, but writer Janet Eagleson and photographer Rosemary Hasner should get some kind of award for producing such a useful yet lovely volume. Granted, folks who want to get into commercial sugaring should track down a copy of the Nearings' work. But syrup connoisseurs and backyard sugarers will enjoy turning the pages of this one, over and over. It's small enough to fit onto any bookshelf, yet elegant enough to grace any coffee table, year round.

Editorial Review:

Delighting in nature's liquid gold.

In this richly illustrated book, the authors explore every aspect of maple syrup's history and lore, from Native legends surrounding its discovery to its importance in the pioneer diet. They explain the sugar maple's exalted status in the maple tree family and why maple sap is still one of nature's great mysteries. Included are details of how sugar maples are tapped and how the sap is collected, a long-standing and important tradition in New England.

The Maple Syrup Book also includes insights from producers of maple syrup and maple sugar as they reveal their affection for a shared passion. A Maple Syrup Flavor Wheel describes the many colors, grades, and flavor variations available, and there are selected recipes and notes on cooking with maple syrup.

Warning: Great Cruising Guide ahead! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Bill Wolversten in this, the first in a three-volume guide to Cruising the British Columbia waters, does a great job helping both the "Yachties" and the "Sporties" find the best places to spend an enjoyable time in BC. Bill offers a foundation of answers to: Where is it? How do I get there? and What is there? For enjoyment, he seasons this solid information with historical background and local knowledge. And finally, in case you didn't get the message from the text that Canada's BC is one of the world's best cruising ground, he drives the point home with stunningly beautiful pictures of the area. For anybody venturing into British Columbia in a pleasure boat, this and the other two books in the series are a must-add to your collection of cruising guides.

Editorial Review:
