Unreliable 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I was not previously familiar with an atlas that is published entirely in one scale, especially a road atlas. The result is that whole pages of northern BC have barely a road while Vancouver lacks any useful detail. In a few instances, I found it unreliable, such as missing Dinosaur Lake behind a hydro damn in Hudson's Hope. Airports, even Vancouver International, are not considered worthy of inclusion. (Though you can deduce the existence of the airport because the airport customs symbol is different from other customs symbols.)

While this guide might be useful in tandem with a more detailed book, I would not recommend including it's weight in your backpack.

Great Book for Dreamers 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Maria Coffey's clear prose and Dag Goering's moving photographs make this a "must have" for sailors, wooden boat buffs and those in love with life afloat. Alan Farrell is a legend of the Canadian Gulf Islands, and Maria has done a fine job capturing the spirit of this man from another age. He and his life have a lot to teach us all. I find myself poring over this book in the bleak months of winter, dreaming of a place I'd rather be.

Editorial Review:

Maria Coffey and Dag Goering embark on a three-month journey by wooden boat along Canada's spectacular west coast. Leading the way are legendary boat builders and sailors Allen and Sharie Farrell on their last voyage aboard the China Cloud. Powered only by wind and sculling oars, they take Coffey and Goering to their old haunts, places where they homesteaded, fished, and built boats. Years roll away as the Farrells recount decades of memories with passion, insight and humour.

Excellent tale... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I read some of the previous reviews before getting this and some were positive and some negative...I have to say I was very much pleased with the book, excellent story and tale with local dialogue to add an element of adventure and flair. I just really enjoyed the story and to see the hardships people faced...

A great read for lovers of the Canadian North 5 out of 5 stars.

A fascinating book! A well written account by a man who traveled extensively in the Canadian North in the 1930s, just as the traditional remoteness that had characterized that world was ending with the introduction of planes and other technologies. Merrick was a keen and sympathetic friend of the North, its history and its Native peoples.

Editorial Review:

In 1929, at the age of 24, Elliott Merrick left his position as an advertising executive in New Jersey and headed up to Labrador to work as an unpaid volunteer for the Grenfell Mission. In 1933 he wrote True North about his experiences in the northern wilderness, living and working with trappers, Indians and with the nurse he met and married in a remote community. The book describes the hard work and severe conditions, along with the joy and friendship he and his wife experienced.

Clearly Canadian (and better than the first!) 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This SECOND collection of imagery and musings from Famous Canadian Writer Douglas Coupland didn't always strike a chord with me. I'm from a different part of the country, with different history and experiences, of course.

Yet enough was oddly, eerily familiar to convince me that there are few young writers better qualified to comment on the State of Our Nation than Coupland. Not as enjoyable as his fiction, but something fun to tide us fans over while we wait!

I enjoyed this quirky collection, particularly Coupland's Canadian House installation art, more than the first. The images seemed fresher and his intelligent commentary was just as enjoyable. Keep 'em coming!

Editorial Review:

Douglas Coupland returns to reinventing Canada with additional proof that his bestseller Souvenir of Canada made clear: Canada is way more than slightly cool. Coupland’s net has a colorful, lively mix of cultural commentary and images that include a tour of Nanaimo bars; unforgettable railways photos; and a double-headed goose that symbolizes the country’s duality. In addition to his trademark visual revelations, Coupland here creates new works of art and design that further evoke the Canadian identity. Each of these objects mirrors his personal relationship to the Great White North in a way that’s both local and universal.

Not exactly complete backroads 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is about the only good atlas I could find of Canada, but it left me wanting more than what I got. In particular, Ontario back-roads are not covered very well, and that is exactly what I needed. I am talking the dirt roads off the main paved roads. There are some on the maps, but I know there are lots more that aren't. The details of all the metro areas is very good, and names of parks and lakes is very good. There are about 700 coated pages, 8.5x11, so it is 1.25 inches think and rather heavy to lug around. Still, this is a very good atlas to get you around Canada. The maps are pretty well sectioned and easy to navigate through. I am going to use GPS with topo maps to get me around where these maps don't cover. To bad Delorme doesn't make Canada maps, they have me spoiled.

Editorial Review:

Convenient Guide to Toronto 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book is ideal for a short trip to Toronto or for those who don't care to carry large, bulky books with them on vacation. Most of the information is short, to the point, with a minimum of color commentary. There is a section devoted to the history of the city and references to other books for those who want more information. The book is small enough to fit in a backpack or even a coat pocket so it can be carried with you. Probably not ideal for an extended stay, but overall helpful.

Editorial Review:
