Review in Backpacker Magazine, May 1995 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

"Here's a book you should have. I know, I know, everybody says that but this is different. This book lays out what avalanches are and how they happen, and it will save your life. Now notice I didn't say this is a book you should have on your bookshelf. This one should be in the top pocket of your pack. Simply put,"Snow Sense" is a pocket guide to safe snow travel, whether you're hiking, backpacking, skiing, snowshoeing, or mountaineering in high risk areas.

Avalanches don't simply explode out of nowhere. The ones that kill people are usually started by the victims. This book will teach you that such catastrophes are avoidable. You can learn to recognize and evaluate avalanche hazards. You can learn to "read" the snowpack, "read" the mountains, and save your skin. "Snow Sense" is a hands-on, explicit, clear-thinking, hard-hitting field guide that teaches you how. By studying the book's "bulls-eye" clues to snowpack stability, hardness tests, shear block tests, weather analysis, simple physics, and hazard checklists, you'll come away with all you need to know about avalanches and how to avoid being caught by one.

Read it once. Read it again. Take it into the field and practice the skills it teaches. Every time I hear of another avalanche-caused death in the Rockies, I wish the victim had read this book. The survivors must read it.

Editorial Review:

"Snow Sense" is the best-selling, easiest to read, most informative avalanche safety book available. Intended for skiers, snowmachiners, snowboarders, climbers and others who work and play in avalanche country, "Snow Sense" is written to help backcountry travelers learn to recognize, evaluate, and avoid snow avalanche hazards.

Avalanche accidents do not happen by accident; they happen for particular reasons. "Snow Sense" addresses the critical terrain, snowpack, and weather variables that make it possible for a slope to avalanche along with the human factors that allow most accidents to happen. If you don't want to become an avalanche victim, read this book.

Problems using CD with Mac 2 out of 5 stars.
20 of 24 people found this review helpful.

I pre-ordered the Woodall's North American Campground Directory with CD, 2008 and received it the day after Christmas. The book is what you expect from Woodall's--an extensive listing of campgrounds with very little information on each, buried in page after page of ads, hard to use but useful for finding and doing the initial screening of campgrounds which you then have to call to get the up-to-date information you really need.

But the CD won't load on my Mac (OS X Leopard 10.5.1) as advertised. I called the 800 number on the CD case and got an "...extension 492 is invalid..." message so I hit "0" and got a very nice operator. She listened to my problem and then said, "Let me switch you to Lance." After leaving voice mails over several days, I finally got Lance on the phone and he immediately decided that I had received a corrupt CD. He overnighted one to me but I got the same error with it. I'm now leaving voice mails again in hopes that he will solve my problem.

So, the book is mediocre, the CD won't work, and support is..., well, I'll be nice and just say that it's lacking. Two stars is generous, in my opinion. If I don't receive satisfaction soon, I'll return the package for a refund.

***Added on January 16, 2008***

Well, at least they've fixed their phone system. I got through to Lance a week ago and he said there were problems with the software on Macs with the latest version of Leopard (OS X 10.5.1). He advised me to watch the CDROM Web site (not their main site--see CD package) for an updated version. Nothing yet. My disappointment continues.

***Added on January 29, 2008***

Lance now says that they're not sure they'll be able to get the program to work on a Mac with Leopard OS X. He offered to refund my money. Bummer. Oh, and their 800 number is again going to an invalid extension. Kind of makes you wonder.

Editorial Review:

Special Value-Added Package!  The 2008 North American Directory with CD-ROM features all of the same information as the directory, but also includes a complete, searchable CD-ROM of the Woodall Campground Directory.

The Woodall's 2008 CD-ROM is only available with select copies of the printed directory, is completely searchable, and features the entire Woodall's database of campgrounds, service centers, and attractions.  Special features and editorial exclusive to Woodall's Campground Directory CD-ROM are also included.

absorbing 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is an absorbing traveller's tale which I began reading late at night and couldn't go to bed before finishing. Not only didn't I find it boring but I disagree with most of the criticisms in Thy Tran's review. Firstly, Delisle made it clear that he tried hard to converse with and get to know his translator but received no encouragement, which he found quite disheartening. The incident where they only begin to talk a short while before he leaves, when the formality and apparent awkwardness inherent in their situation fall away and parting is suddenly close at hand, is entirely true to life and happens to all sorts of people both within and across cultures. Also, Delisle obviously tried several places to eat and a variety of dishes with varying success and for him to settle on reliable favourites, as a semi-permanent resident, is quite natural. We all do it both at home and abroad while keeping our curiosity and options open. It seems to me that Delisle does all this in an understandably human way and I cannot see how this reflects badly on his attitude. He is obviously frustrated by many things and makes no bones about it, but he remains curious about the world he finds himself in and tries to find a way into it through the thing he knows and loves best, drawing - and by seeking out the work of Chinese artists that he has a powerful response to. I also fail to see any of the stereotyping that Thy Tran seems to infer from the book and on another flick through it I cannot readily see any of the "buckteeth" he finds so annoying. Like Delisle's "Pyongyang" this is a highly enjoyable and very human book and I recommend it.

Editorial Review:

The follow-up graphic novel to the acclaimed Pyongyang: A Journey to North Korea

Shenzhen is entertainingly compact, with Guy Delisle’s observations of life in a cold urban city in southern China that is sealed off from the rest of the country by electric fences and armed guards. With a dry wit and a clean line, Delisle makes the most of his time spent in Asia overseeing outsourced production for a French animation company. By translating his fish-out-of-water experiences into accessible graphic novels,Delisle is quick to find the humor and point out the differences between Western and Eastern cultures. Yet he never forgets to relay his compassion for the simple freedoms that escape his colleagues by virtue of living in a Communist state.

Editorial Review:

America’s #1 bestselling travel series

Written by more than 175 outspoken travelers around the globe, Frommer’s Complete Guides help travelers experience places the way locals do.

  • More annually updated guides than any other series
  • 16-page color section and foldout map in all annual guides
  • Outspoken opinions, exact prices, and suggested itineraries
  • Dozens of detailed maps in an easy-to-read, two-color design

A cruise is a complete vacation, so it's important that you choose the one that's right for you. Frommer's Cruises & Ports of Call 2009 is the most user-friendly, opinionated, and comprehensive guide you can buy before you set sail. We provide in-depth coverage on cruises departing from U.S. ports to the Caribbean, Alaska, Mexico, Bermuda, and Canada.

Unlike rating systems used in other guides, our system is simple. We break down the essential elements of a cruise experience (dining, activities, children's activities, entertainment, service, overall enjoyment, and overall value), and rate them from "poor" to "outstanding." Photos of each ship combine with the text to give a better sense of the very real differences among the various lines.

Most important, this is the only cruise guide that provides the real prices people pay for cruises, not just the rack rates. Other guides tell you that a seven-night cruise aboard Holland America’s Noordam costs $2,639. You can pay that if you want to, but only Frommer's tells you that the same cruise is selling for $899. We give both the rack rates and the discount price for every cruise we review. This feature alone makes Frommer's Cruises and Ports of Call by far the most valuable trip-planning book among cruise guides.

Our authors, noted cruise experts who've personally checked out every ship sailing in and around North America, offer candid and unbiased opinions on them all. They are completely up to date, with all the latest developments and the newest ships. You'll also get complete coverage of the major port destinations, with advice on how to spend your limited time ashore.

Foundation Franklin: The Salvage Tug Sans Peur 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

As a sea officer, I learned about salvage tugs, the men who man them and the ships they've saved from stories told around the dinner table in the officers' saloon and in bars around the world. You just pray you and your ship will never have need of their services.

There are many deep-ocean tugs whose names are well known in the maritime community, but Foundation Franklin was the queen of her kind. In ten words or less, if you were in trouble and she got a line on you, chances were you'd make it home. From a seafarer, there is no higher praise.

Farley Mowat tells her story, from her owners acquiring her as Royal Navy surplus in 1919 until she was laid up for the last time, with loving attention to detail. He writes of her missions, from the comparatively mundane to the incredibly dangerous, in such a way that you feel the deck moving under your feet and the cold North Atlantic spray lashing your face. He puts you squarely in the middle of the action. True, the finer points will be best appreciated by those of us who make or have made our living on the deep blue, but the writing is so rich even landsmen and armchair sailors will understand and come to respect the intrepidity of the deep ocean salvage men. That's reason enough to read this book.

But more to the point, Mowat manages to convey to his readers the pride that sailors feel when some of their own pull off a difficult mission. He chronicles a little known and unappreciated chapter of the Second World War: the Merchant Mariners who faced the perils of U-Boats, bomber attacks and of course the ordinary hazards of foul weather sailing; and who, by getting the cargo through, enabled the armed forces to win the war against the Nazis. After reading the book, you will understand why we feel reassured by the knowledge that Foundation Franklin's bell still hangs in the offices of her salvage company - and that when they ring the bell to tell her successors that there is a ship out there in trouble and to get a move on, there are still brave men to answer her call.

Vancouver guide 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This Top Ten collection is really good for summarizing everything you need to know about a place, and if you do not stay too long it is not worth buying the bigger more detailed more expensive guide!!!
Definetely worth the money...Took more than a week to arrive though.

Vancouver for the tourist.... 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

"Top Ten Vancouver" is in the familiar and very useful DK format, with lots of useful information in a compact format for the tourist. In just over 120 pages, "Top Ten" covers the most popular tourist attractions in Vancouver, such as Stanley Park, Canada Place, the Capilano Suspension Bridge, and a variety of museums and other parks. The guide includes pictures, details about each attraction, and maps showing how to get there.

As noted, the focus is on the most popular destinations. The guide includes useful information on reaching the city and where to stay, eat, and shop. The information addresses cautions on crime and traffic. The traveler seeking more choices and details on accomodations should consult some of the most expansive guides such as Fedor's, Frommer's, or Lonely Planet. The compact size of this DK guide makes it perfect for roaming Vancouver. A limited amount of information is provided on the City of Victoria, on Vancouver Island across the Strait of Georgia and reachable by ferry.

This guide is highly recommended for the traveler planning a vacation in Vancouver.

Very Helpful Trail Guide 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Best Easy Day Hikes for Glacier and Waterton Lakes National Parks is a bit misleading as a title. While there are easy hikes, some are far from it. For example, one hike is nine miles long with a 1200-foot climb while another is over 14 miles long. Fortunately, the distances and elevation changes are clearly marked in the description so it is easy to select those you are willing and able to tackle while leaving the others for the more adventurous. There are also maps for each hike but it sometimes took me a while to use them. The actual trail wasn't always well defined within the larger area portrayed on the map and I often found the trailheads especially difficult to spot. It was not a major problem as I always worked it out in the end but it is an area that could use a bit of improvement.

There are 28 hikes listed and they are broken down into 5 geographic areas of the two parks. My wife and I did 2-3 hikes from each area and found the descriptions to be both helpful and largely accurate. The book is small enough to easily fit in a hip pocket and held up very well during a full week of heavy usage. Color photos would have been a nice addition but that would have made the book both larger and heavier which is not ideal for a pocket guide. Overall, this was a great purchase at an extremely reasonable price.

Editorial Review:

Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park is home to a vast network of hiking trails. But if you’re only going to be in Glacier and Waterton national parks for a day or two, have time for only one or two short hikes, and you’re looking for trails that are not too physically demanding, which trails should you choose? This book answers that question. Best Easy Day Hikes Glacier & Waterton Lakes contains short descriptions and maps of the author’s favorite easy day hikes in Glacier and Waterton. All of the hikes in this little book are relatively short, on well-defined, easy-to-follow trails that take you to some of the area’s most spectacular scenery—without taking you to physical extremes. Features 28 hikes.
