Editorial Review:

A  cruise is a complete vacation, so it's important that you choose the one that's right for you. Frommer's Cruises & Ports of Call is the most user-friendly, opinionated, and comprehensive guide you can buy before you set sail. We provide in-depth coverage on cruises departing from U.S. ports to the Caribbean, Alaska, Bermuda, Mexico and Canada.

Unlike rating systems used in other guides, our system is simple. We break down the essential elements of a cruise experience (dining, activities, children's activities, entertainment, service, overall enjoyment, and overall value), and rate them from "poor" to "outstanding." Photos of each ship combine with the text to give a better sense of the very real differences among the various lines.

Most important, this is the only cruise guide that provides the real prices people pay for cruises, not just the rack rates. Other guides tell you that a seven-night cruise aboard Norwegian's Norwegian Jewel costs $2,299. You can pay that if you want to, but only Frommer's tells you that the same cruise is selling for $764. We give both the rack rates and the discount price for every cruise we review. This feature alone makes Frommer's Cruises and Ports of Call by far the most valuable trip-planning book among cruise guides.

Our authors, noted cruise experts who've personally checked out every ship sailing in and around North America, offer candid and unbiased opinions on them all. They are completely up to date, with all the latest developments and the newest ships. You'll also get complete coverage of the major port destinations, with advice on how to spend your limited time ashore.

Good Easy Read 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a good, fun, easy read (only 120 pages or so). You are not going to reach any epithanies in your life from the book, but there will be times you will just plain lose it from some of its humor. Everyone I have given the book to read (they are all motorheads) have found the book a great read. I recommend it.

Fantastic Riding Story 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book was excellent! Kroeker is very funny. He rides from Canada thru Central America on a motorcycle. He is very self aware so he is able to really descibe what the trip was like, and why he reacted to certain situations.

I reccomend this book even if you are not a big motorcycle fan.

An ok read but not value for money 2 out of 5 stars.

Good humour in the book, nice for a quick read but definately not worth the $15 or so dollars for what you get.(Hence the 2 stars)

Editorial Review:

From the Canadian Rockies to the Panamanian Jungle, Motorcycle Therapy rumbles with comic adventure as two men, fleeing failed relationships, test the limits of their motorcycles and their friendship. Join the horn-honking, signal-flashing, wheelie-popping pair as they endure painful bee stings, painful snakebites and (when they talk to girls) painful humiliation.

Good reference guide 3 out of 5 stars.
10 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I used this, along with Best Easy Day Hikes to plan a trip to Glacier. I wouldn't necessarily use it as the only reference guide, but it was a good start and was helpful for mileage and difficulty ratings for each trail. I also generally do quite a bit of research for my trips on the internet. This did come in handy one day we were trying to fill an afternoon with a shorter hike, though. It was good to have more detailed information about each trail to assist in that decision.

One thing to be warned about at Glacier - especially if you go early in the season (we went 1st week of July)- information from Rangers is not always accurate or up to date. We were told several trails were closed due to snow that we found out too late weren't. We missed one very good hike due to this. We also were told the Highline trail would only take us a couple of hours. When we got to Granite Park Chalet (4.5 hours later) we found out the trail generally takes at least 4 hours. You will want to add in time for picture taking and possible traffic jams (by mountain goats and such) and if you go early in the season, crossing of snow fields. We also found out that several people were advised not to hike the Highline when we did due to some dangerous snow fields (narrow trail covered in slick snow with a sure to be dead drop off if you should slip). I guess my suggestion would be to ask several people instead of relying on advice from just one. It is a beautiful park that everyone should see once - I would recommend the Highline, Swiftcurrent, and Hidden Lake trails.

A good view from "The Rock" 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Robert Finch's "The Iambics of Newfoundland" reconnected myself to my own experiences as a visitor to Newfoundland's shores. Having been "from away" Robert's book helped put into words the same generosity and concerns Newfoundlanders exhibited during my time on "The Rock".
My definition of a typical Newfie had always been a person that helps though you didn't ask, does more than what you expect and then apologies because they felt they hadn't helped you enough. His book helps show what a truly wonderful community these people are and explains precisely how, after hundreds of years of hardship and uncertainty these families have endured, adapted but mostly kept that keen sense of humour and respect for their surroundings.

Editorial Review:

For nearly a decade, Robert Finch traveled around the “edge of North America” — the stunning yet seriously inhospitable island of Newfoundland. Here, he chronicles the people, geography, and wildlife of this remote and lovely place. In beautifully written essays, sketches, and stories, Finch roams from verdant valleys to the rocky cliffs of Cape Spear, from Sandy Cove to Squid Tickle, from the steep streets of historic St. John’s to the moss-covered tundra of the southern coast. As he describes the land, he brings to life the island’s diverse array of characters — newcomers and old-timers, fisherman, hunters, hitchhikers, and children. Most of all, The Iambics of Newfoundland shows readers the island itself — an ancient place tucked between provinces, languages, and cultures — struggling to find a footing in the modern world.

A Great Book About The Portland Metro Area 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 12 people found this review helpful.

INSIDERS' GUIDE TO PORTLAND, OREGON, 5TH is a great guide to the cities of Portland and Vancouver, as well as their surrounding suburbs. Besides such information as house values, attractions, and the quality of schools in the area, the book also features detailed listings of the radio stations in the area, as well as in-depth discussions of what types of healthy-eating ideas and ethnic cuisine you can find in this metroplex. The book lacks a deep discussion of shopping malls in the area, preferring instead to focus on the other types of stores where a guy can find things to keep his woman happy, including CDs to dance to with her and clothes to help him look his best for her, which seems to indicate that independent stores are often the way to go to keep such promises, especially in a high-culture area such as Portland/Vancouver. Despite the lack of information on local malls, however, it's a wonderful book.

Editorial Review:

With more microbreweries than any other city, the nation's largest bookstore, and the most beautiful Japanese garden outside of Japan, Portland is an ideal place to live or visit. Highlighting the best of the city's arts, recreation, and dining, this guide is essential for anyone wishing to get the most out of what Portland has to offer.

Good, But The Other Maps Are Better 4 out of 5 stars.
37 of 42 people found this review helpful.

This map is a good map for those people (like me) who are addicted to Pratchett. Like the others, it helps so much with the visualisation of the places of the book (hubwise, rimwise - it all gets blurred after awhile). However, the map's only negative aspect was that it was a very large map with only a bit of detail here and there - Everything looked a bit spaced out.

Editorial Review:

Between Uberwald and Whale Bay, the Octarine Grass Country and the Widdershins Ocean, lies the most exciting and dangerous terrain in all Discworld. This is a map of Lancre, where Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, and Magrat Garlick live.

What to Do Where 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The key feature of Frommer's guides is their "what to do if" pages. While I was on a tour which took us to certain attractions, there was sufficient free time to explore others. Having someone to guide you to the most worthwhile attractions depending on how much time you have available is helpful when visiting for the first time. I took some of their suggestions, but also found others just as interesting. The guide book is targeted for the mainstream adult audience rather than youth or those on a frugal budget. The pages of need to know items as well as items such as where to find bookstores and other make it very handy. The pages concerning accommodations and restaurants are as current as can be.

I highly recommend it for its target audience

Jonathan

Wish I'd had this the last time I visited Hogtown... 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

... you can bet I'll have it with me when I go back. The usual Streetwise quality is evident in this map; the only quibble I have with it is the rather odd orientation. Thanks to the fact that all Streetwise have to fit into their standard rectangle shape, and the somewhat unusual shape of Toronto means that in order to fit it in, it has to be oriented with north nowhere near "up". Once you get used to that, though, you have a dandy, sturdy map of Toronto, including the TTC subway lines.

Convenient, but needs to be updated 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this in 2003 for a trip later that year. I had no problems getting around, but after multiple trips to the city I would recommend buying a map once you're in the city. I spotted a minor error with the subway listings, and they list a non-existent green space in the Annex neighborhood...I asked a passerby and they had no idea where it could be! The TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) has free, to-date-maps that are available in all the stations with agents. So do some booths at Pearson Airport. Still, the foldable, waterproof format is super-convenient. Just remember to pick up a more current map and carry the Streetwise one when you're walking around for general reference.
