Editorial Review:

Puerto Rico, Island in the Sun is a small "coffee-table" pictorial book (measuring 10 x 9") with color photographs and English-language text. The photographs and accompanying captions present the scenery, beaches, architecture, geography, culture, and history of Puerto Rico, with a special emphasis on aerial photographs and Viejo (Old) San Juan. A full page of text introduces each of the four chapters, which are: "Dawn" (dealing with the island’s history); "La Isla del Encanto" (translation: "the Island of Enchantment"); "San Juan"; and "Island in the Sun".

This is the fourth book on Puerto Rico from author-photographer Roger LaBrucherie, whose books on Barbados, Bermuda, the Dominican Republic, and Hawaii have made him one of the world’s leading photographers of tropical islands. His previous three tiles on Puerto Rico have been best-sellers on the island over the past two decades. In addition to his stunning award-winning photography, Mr. LaBrucherie brings to his work the perspective on the Caribbean gained from his training and service as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, as well as his years spent living throughout the Caribbean.

Worth its weight in sunken treasure 5 out of 5 stars.

I spent two weeks in Bermuda, and was very glad I brought this book along with me. I doubt very much that there are many interesting corners of the country that have been overlooked by the authors of this guide -- some of which I never would have thought to investigate had this book not alerted me to their existence. I especially appreciated all the historical and cultural details, and found that it was an invaluable tool in keeping costs down in a country where just about everything is VERY pricey. This book has since been re-used by other members of my family on their own trips to Bermuda, and has paid for itself several times over.

This opening fold-out contains a general map of Rome to help you visualize the 6 large districts discussed in this guide, and 4 pages of valuable information, handy tips and useful addresses.

Discover Rome through 6 districts and 6 maps

Campo dei Fiori/ Pantheon/ Piazza Navona
Vaticano/ Piazza Cavour/ Prati
Testaccio/ Aventino/ Trastevere/ Ghetto
Tridente/ Piazza del Popolo/ Villa Borghese
Quirinale/ Esquilino/ Termini
Caracalla/ San Giovanni/ Colosseo

For each district there is a double-page of addresses (restaurants — listed in ascending order of price — cafés, bars, tearooms music venues and stores) followed by a fold-out map for the relevant area with the essential places to see (indicated on the map by a star *). These places are by no means all that Rome has to offer but to us they are unmissable. The grid-referencing system (A B2) makes it easy for you to pinpoint addresses quickly on the map.

Transportation and hotels in Rome
The last fold-out consists of a transportation map and 4 pages of practical information that include a selection of hotels.
A thematic index lists all the sites and addresses featured in this guide

Good, but not accurately updated 3 out of 5 stars.

I just reviewed Let's Go PR and Explore PR by Harry Pariser and returned from PR a few days ago. I agree with previous reviewers about this edition - some of the information is not accurate and was not updated. But this might be because the publication year is 2002. I really liked Let's Go - this had by far, the best and most comprehensive info on lodging, eats, and getting around. I would not use Explore PR - this is not useful at all. I would say Let's Go had mostly everything that Lonely planet PR did - except for maybe the background info on culture, history etc. I will consider travelling with both a Lonely planet and a let's go in the future. If you have to choose one book on PR, I would buy Let's Go. If you can take a second, bring the Lonely Planet PR. Also visit Culebra!

Editorial Review:

Tourists visit popular islands of the Caribbean by the planeload. What they don't see from their resort hotels are the hundreds of out-of-the-way, uninhabited islands sprinkled along the West Indies from Florida to South America. This alluring archipelago, strung with beaches accessible only by boat but spaced temptingly close together, led Mississippi adventurer Scott B. Williams to embark upon an open-ended quest to see how far south he could go in a seventeen-foot sea kayak.

No one was willing to accompany him. He spent months working his way down the west coast of Florida, through the Bahamas, and on to Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. On Island Time: Kayaking the Caribbean, his narrative of this journey of a lifetime, describes the wonders of discovery as he makes landfall on pristine cays. Relentless headwinds, dangerous surf, countless beaches declared off-limits to trespassing, and aggressive sharks that ram his kayak and snap him out of his musing remind the adventurer that this paradise is far from perfect. Every day of the journey required constant vigilance.

With no one to depend on and often no one even knowing where he was for weeks at a time, Williams learned what it means to be self-reliant and to adjust to "island time." With just a simple craft and the few belongings that would fit in it, Williams explores an almost boundless frontier and a powerful natural stretch of the Caribbean rarely, if ever, accessed by the island tourist.

A woodworker and boat carpenter, Scott B. Williams, Brandon, Mississippi, has published in such periodicals as Sea Kayaker, Mississippi Outdoors, and South Mississippi Outdoors and Recreation.

Editorial Review:

Each of the islands in this chain has its own history, culture and ecology, and the author tells about each one. Rainforest, beaches, wetlands, mangrove swamps and offshore shoals afford an unlimited variety of places to create your own adventure vacation. The ultimate resource if you re heading for some fun in the sun, the guide also covers all the sites and attractions, including historical forts, plantations and in-town places of interest, but it leads you away from the tourist traps and into the heart of each island to discover hidden waterfalls, mountain streams and secret trails. For each island there is detailed information on where to stay and eat, from five-star resorts to family-run B&Bs and from haute cuisine to roadside stands selling the best BBQ chicken on the island. Focusing on outdoor activities, the author recommends local tour operators and adventure outfitters, with contact names and numbers, but also tells how to tour on your own. Color photos & maps throughout.

Great compact guide 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book came in handy on our recent visit to St. Lucia. It was small and had great pictures. The top 10 sights of St. Lucia list was also helpful. The book was organized by areas of the Island, so it was difficult to make comparisons without flipping back and forth. Overall I would give the book a high recommendation.

hummmmmmmmm it's OK. 3 out of 5 stars.

Well, I just got this from Amazon (1 month to get it delivered!) and am unimpressed. I've read it, and just don't feel any more ready for my trip than I did before. I also ordered the landmark guide, and if it ever comes, I'll compare it as well.... The pictures ARE lovely and it's a handy size for throwing in a pocket or bag. Will update the review after I return from St Lucia....

Editorial Review:

This 120-page, small pocket-sized book tells you all you need to know about St. Lucia's attractions, from its spectacular rainforest to its fine beaches, from towns shaped by pretty squares and French-colonial architecture to colourful underwater treasures around pristine reefs. An introductory chapter details its history and culture; and a comprehensive information section at the back of the book is packed with hotel and restaurant listings, essential contact addresses and numbers. Plus dozens of top-notch, full-colour photographs and maps.

Buy Lonely Planet instead 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I travel to PR frequently for my job. I like to always have a guidebook with me in case I have a new person with me or venture somewhere new. I bought the Let's Go because my most recent Lonely Planet guide was 4 years old (too old for a guidebook) and the new one wasn't coming out until mid-summer. The Let's Go book was a disappointment. The information is insufficient, poorly organized, etc. For example, in the sections about Culebra and Vieques (places I love to visit), it fails to mention how to get to the ferry dock in Fajardo from San Juan - you either need to drive there and park (and finding the dock is NOT easy in Fajardo as putting up helpful signs is not something PR does well), or you can take a publico (they do tell you where the station is in SJ) but this takes all day and maybe won't get you to the dock at all. They mention flying but with no instructions or map for finding the airport in Fajardo. Anyway, this is just an example of where just reading Let's Go could lead to a very frustrating experience for a traveller. Being an independent traveller is great and implies some tolerance for "adventure" but it is the guidebook's responsibility to help independent travellers be prepared for what they are going to have to deal with so they can have fun! Buy Lonely Planet. It's a better PR guide. I have also read Fodor's pocket guide to PR. Skip that one too. And when you get to PR if you rent a car, buy a real road map at a gas station or drugstore.

Editorial Review:

A delightful book by a wonderful naturalist 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Archie Carr was the Godfather of modern sea-turtle biology and an outspoken advocate of turtle conservation who did more than anyone else to bring our attention to these creatures. The Windward Road is a masterpiece of Natural History writing, capturing a magical moment in time as Carr delves into the secret lives of the great green turtles and takes us with him on journeys to Caribbean islands as yet largely unspoiled by the wave of development that was to come. Anyone interested in conservation biology or with a love of a good yarn should get hold of this book, sink back and hear the trade winds blow -and then get out of your chair & do something to carry on the struggle that Carr waged for so long to preserve turtles and their habitats. This is a book that you will come back to repeatedly & pass on to friends and students with enthusiasm.

Editorial Review:

The Windward Road, published in 1956, made history. When Archie Carr began to rove the Caribbean to write about sea turtles, he saw that their numbers were dwindling. Out of this appeal to save them grew the first ventures in international sea turtle conservation and the establishment of the Caribbean Conservation Corporation.  In addition to sea turtle biology, Carr recorded his general impressions, producing a natural history sprinkled with colorful stories.

Very helpful 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I am a Trinidadian who has been living abroad for the past eight years. I had not been back to Trinidad and Tobago since 1999 and was very much out of touch with what was current. I needed to organize a wedding in Trinidad from abroad and accomodation and activities for our foreign guests.
This was one of two guidebooks dedicated only to Trinidad and Tobago in my local bookstore. For this reason alone it already earns its stars because Trinidad and Tobago is not a popular tourist destination so there aren't many guides dedicated to the this country alone.
I thought the sections on accomodations in each locale was well organized and that the information about the places were mostly accurate. There were exhaustive descriptions of each area of Trinidad and Tobago which were very accurate along with long lists of what to see and do in each area and who to call for tours etc. It also contained long lists of bars, restaurants and clubs for all budgets and tastes.
I was very pleased with this book as it helped me immensly in planning of my wedding and accomodations and tours for my guests. Of course one should supplement the information in the book with searches on the internet for things like accomodations and tour guides as I was able to find some cheaper deals which were not included in the book. However, this is also the case with many other travel books on other places which I have visited where I have always found cheaper accomodations and tours etc. from the internet.

Editorial Review:
