Good Job 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I've literally been around the world backpacking with Lonely Planet guides and like them a lot for budget travel. This is my first experience with Moon and I like this one better. I also ordered the Lonely Planet Cuba guide at the same time and they were released in October and November, '06 so they're comparable in that sense. The Moon is a little heavier which is a consideration if you're traveling light, but that's not insurmountable.

Editorial Review:

Moon’s award-winning guide to Cuba provides you with the essential details needed to discover all the can't miss sights, attractions, and restaurants in Cuba — for all budgets. Plus, Moon Cuba highlights the best lesser-known and local hotspots. Check out off-beat destinations such as Finca Manacas (the birthplace of Fidel), Parque Lennon, and Rumba de Salvador's Alley. Or read the intriguing sidebars on Tropicana nightclubs, cigars, and the history of Cuba.
With firsthand experience and honest insight, bestselling author Christopher P. Baker provides you with all the tools you need to create your own unique experience. Chris's fun and creative travel suggestions can help you plan your perfect trip.

The only book we used... 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

We bought 3 books and always seemed to rely on this one. Mr Kay gives great info on restaurants and hidden lodgings, which are the 2 most important topics for us. We actually stayed in one place that he labeled "hidden" and he was right! We could not find the entrance and when we did they were not open to the public, but they decided to let us stay and we were the only guests for a week. No other guide book listed this hidden lodging. Mr. Kay has a more personal approach and gives great descriptions, which the other guide books lack. And as far as not giving exact prices, it's useless to do so as these things change so much anyway. All you need to know is this: you stay in a big hotel where all the other tourists stay you will pay big money for not so much, if you venture out to where the real people live, you pay less and get better service, food, and memories.

Editorial Review:

Award-winning travel writer Robert Kay offers this all-new guide for those seeking adventure on Tahiti and throughout French Polynesia. From the "Bounty" to "Bali Hai," no place symbolizes escape like Tahiti. With over 130 islands spread across an area larger than Western Europe, French Polynesia is an entire world of secluded retreats. Hidden Tahiti is the perfect guide for those seeking an island adventure or a soul-rejuvenating getaway. Illustrations and maps.

OK, But Paul Humann's Book is Much Better 2 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

A few years ago, I bought the Audubon Society Field Guide to Tropical Marine Fishes and found when I tried to use it in the Florida Keys that there were many fish I couldn't identify. People recommended I buy Paul Humann's book, "Reef Fish Identification." The book is more expensive, but I found it to be far more comprehensive and user friendly. For example, many fish look entirely different when in their "juvenile," "initial" or "terminal" phase, and the "Reef Fish Identification" book has clear photos of each of the three stages shown beside each other, and frequently includes photos of alternate color phases as well. The Audubon book usually just shows a picture of the fish in just one phase, and often not a terribly good photo at that. Next to each photo in the Humann book is an excellent line drawing of the fish, highlighting and labeling which features of a fish are most dependable for identification. The Audubon book includes no such diagrams to aid identification. Finally, the Humann book is based upon both an extensive bibliography and collaboration with field biologists, and if the detailed descriptions in his book of definitive features for discriminating species of fish are correct (and experienced scuba divers tell me they are correct) then some of the pictures in the Audubon guide are actually even misidentified as to species. For example, the Audubon picture labeled as a "Leopard Goby" is almost certainly a picture of an "Orange-sided Goby" (if the Humann book is correct about dark lines outlining the orange rectangles being a reliable discriminating feature). If there were no other reef fish identification book available, I would have given the Audubon book more stars, I am usually a great fan of the Audubon Field Guide series, but in comparison with the Humann book it just doesn't rate very well. I should add that I have never met, nor have any private or professional association with, the author of either of these books, so my opinion is not biased by any such affiliation.
Finally, I should add that I am pleased nevertheless to own both of these books because, for many species of fish, fish of the same species can be found in a wide variety of colors and patterns, so you can never study too many photos to get a handle on the range of appearances possible for any given species. Buy the Humann book if you can just afford one book, but owning both books is even better!

Editorial Review:

The most comprehensive field guide available to the tropical fishes of the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, Florida, the Bahamas, and Bermuda. All 417 photographs are in full color, capturing the natural beauty of the fishes on coral reefs and other habitats of tropical marine waters. The species photographs are keyed to full text descriptions of more than 400 species, each with its own range map. The text also includes brief coverage of nearly 800 additional species. Detailed endpaper maps, precise black-and-white drawings, and an illustrated family key supplement this authoritative and visually stunning resource.

The National Audubon Society Field Guides group species according to taxonomy and shape. Helpful thumb-tab silhouette keys make identification quick and easy.

Good book for your tackle box 3 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I bought this 64-page 6"x9" booklet mainly to keep in my tackle box. It has figures of basic knots. It talks about how and when to set up baits, lures and rigs under various conditions. It also gives techniques when fishing from jetties, banks, inshore, offshore, bridges, canals, etc. It's really handy if you are not having a particularly good fishing day and you want to move or change bait. I would have rated it a 4-star, except that it is a 1992 book, and the information on tackle and rigging is generically informative, but specifically just too old. The techniques info is just fine though. I'd recommend it only as a reference booklet.

Editorial Review:

Using photos and illustrations, this book is a valuable resource on the fishing line, rods, reels, knots, terminal tackle, and lures used in saltwater fishing. Other subjects include information on where to fish, the techniques and conditions that affect fishing, the best ways to fish both on land and from a boat, and tips on catching different species on fish.

Love This Guide 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Although we won't be leaving for our first trip to St. Lucia for another week, I have to say that this guidebook had everything I look for when researching vacation destinations.

Given that St. Lucia is a small island, there aren't the number of guidebooks out there that there are for larger destinations. I ordered three different books on St. Lucia but this is, by far, my favorite. My frustration with other guides is that some didn't even have color pictures! When I'm planning a vacation, I like to have clear, color pictures of different attractions and this book has quite a few. It's also more detailed than my other books as far as describing restaurants, resorts, and directions to attractions.

I also love the pocket size of this guide so that I can take it along and utilize the maps, directions, reviews etc. without having something large and bulky to tote around. I feel this guidebook was the most informative and had the clear advantage of having more pictures.

Editorial Review:

Slim, stylish and pocketable, Rough Guides Directions St Lucia has all you need to get the most out of your trip to the island. Pirate hangouts, glorious beaches and lush rainforests are all covered in detail, as are the bustling Castries and the many nature reserves. The guide''s hand-picked accomodation and eating recommendations cover all the main resorts and inland villages, revealing plenty of hidden gems, all indicated on a series of useful maps. With a full-colour section packed with suggestions for things to do and see, from spectacular snorkelling to local festivals, you''ll never be stuck for ideas.
