Good breakdown 5 out of 5 stars.

I have to say that I haven't been there to validate what the book contains, but from the looks of it I think it provides a fair assessment. It was helpful and has loads of categories so whether you're going all-inclusive or not it can help.

Beautiful book 4 out of 5 stars.

Very beautiful, lots of good pictures.

On the negative side, a little bit hard to read, a just too little of information and not enough maps.

In general, very good book.

Great book if travelling to Dominican Republic 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

In 1960 the government of Trinidad invited V. S. Naipaul to revisit his native country and record his impressions. In this classic of modern travel writing he has created a deft and remarkably prescient portrait of Trinidad and four adjacent Caribbean societies–countries haunted by the legacies of slavery and colonialism and so thoroughly defined by the norms of Empire that they can scarcely believe that the Empire is ending.
In The Middle Passage, Naipaul watches a Trinidadian movie audience greeting Humphrey Bogart’s appearance with cries of “That is man!” He ventures into a Trinidad slum so insalubrious that the locals call it the Gaza Strip. He follows a racially charged election campaign in British Guiana (now Guyana) and marvels at the Gallic pretension of Martinique society, which maintains the fiction that its roads are extensions of France’s routes nationales. And throughout he relates the ghastly episodes of the region’s colonial past and shows how they continue to inform its language, politics, and values. The result is a work of novelistic vividness and dazzling perspicacity that displays Naipaul at the peak of his powers.

OK, But Paul Humann's Book is Much Better 2 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

A few years ago, I bought the Audubon Society Field Guide to Tropical Marine Fishes and found when I tried to use it in the Florida Keys that there were many fish I couldn't identify. People recommended I buy Paul Humann's book, "Reef Fish Identification." The book is more expensive, but I found it to be far more comprehensive and user friendly. For example, many fish look entirely different when in their "juvenile," "initial" or "terminal" phase, and the "Reef Fish Identification" book has clear photos of each of the three stages shown beside each other, and frequently includes photos of alternate color phases as well. The Audubon book usually just shows a picture of the fish in just one phase, and often not a terribly good photo at that. Next to each photo in the Humann book is an excellent line drawing of the fish, highlighting and labeling which features of a fish are most dependable for identification. The Audubon book includes no such diagrams to aid identification. Finally, the Humann book is based upon both an extensive bibliography and collaboration with field biologists, and if the detailed descriptions in his book of definitive features for discriminating species of fish are correct (and experienced scuba divers tell me they are correct) then some of the pictures in the Audubon guide are actually even misidentified as to species. For example, the Audubon picture labeled as a "Leopard Goby" is almost certainly a picture of an "Orange-sided Goby" (if the Humann book is correct about dark lines outlining the orange rectangles being a reliable discriminating feature). If there were no other reef fish identification book available, I would have given the Audubon book more stars, I am usually a great fan of the Audubon Field Guide series, but in comparison with the Humann book it just doesn't rate very well. I should add that I have never met, nor have any private or professional association with, the author of either of these books, so my opinion is not biased by any such affiliation.
Finally, I should add that I am pleased nevertheless to own both of these books because, for many species of fish, fish of the same species can be found in a wide variety of colors and patterns, so you can never study too many photos to get a handle on the range of appearances possible for any given species. Buy the Humann book if you can just afford one book, but owning both books is even better!

Editorial Review:

The most comprehensive field guide available to the tropical fishes of the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, Florida, the Bahamas, and Bermuda. All 417 photographs are in full color, capturing the natural beauty of the fishes on coral reefs and other habitats of tropical marine waters. The species photographs are keyed to full text descriptions of more than 400 species, each with its own range map. The text also includes brief coverage of nearly 800 additional species. Detailed endpaper maps, precise black-and-white drawings, and an illustrated family key supplement this authoritative and visually stunning resource.

The National Audubon Society Field Guides group species according to taxonomy and shape. Helpful thumb-tab silhouette keys make identification quick and easy.

The most complete guide book for St. Martin 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I was looking for guide books for St. Martin in late 2006 but wasn't able to find one that I sufficiently liked. It was either one of those guide books for whole Carribean and would gloss over this small island in less than 10 pages; or concentrate solely on the outdoorsy/adventure aspect of things, which is not something I wanted. Fortunately, this book was published about a month before my trip to St. Martin and I was able to get a copy of it before then.

This is the most complete and comprehensive guide book for St. Martin that's out there, so I really liked it. I enjoyed reading about the island's history and it has helpful facts to help you prepare for your trip. The book doesn't list and review even half of the accomodation or the restaurants on this small island. For that, you should consult the internet, eg. Tripadvisor and such. Rather, the book highlights for readers what restaurants they shouldn't miss or which hotel they should book in different price ranges.

I wish that there was a price guideline for rental cars that tell you what the average compact car rental would cost. I also wish there were more restaurant review but that's just the foodie in me talking. Overall, the maps of the towns were quite good and helpful but the overall map of the island is not that great to refer to when driving. You can just get a better island road map when you're there anyway. Nevertheless, the book still offers helpful tidbits such as preparing your own medicines/sunscreen and other pharmaceutical needs because it can get tricky to find a complete pharmacy. The Anguilla/St. Barths section looks rather small but I'm not sure of its helpfulness or usefulness because I didn't go there.

Don't waste your money on this one. 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This "guide" to the Galapagos contains long, boring chapters on tour companies, logistics (including insightful advice such as "bring lots of film" and "don't drink the water"), how to take photographs, and mainland Ecuador. There is a short chapter on Galapagos wildlife. Mr. Boyce owns Galapagos Travel, a tour company specializing in trips to the Galapagos. It is obvious that Mr. Boyce wrote this book for two reasons: (1) to establish himself as an "authority" on the Galapagos, and (2) to sell a copy to everyone who gets on one of his boats. Don't waste your money on this one. (I can't recommend his tour company, either.) If you are in the market for a good guide to the Galapagos, I highly recommend Michael Jackson's authoritative Galapagos: A Natural History Guide.

Editorial Review:

The essentials of a "how-to" travel adventure to the Land of Darwin are available in this comprehensive guide. From the basics of what airline to choose to a detailed analysis of the Tour Operator network, the author describes the rules and tells the reader how to play the Galapagos adventure travel game. History, wildlife, and details on what to pack are also includEd

History of Chile book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a concise, well-written and comprehensive history of Chile, one of the America's oldest democracies until the 1973 military coup. It provides an interesting overview of the country's complex history. In the account of the country's return to democracy following the 1973 coup, it presents a fair, balanced treatment.

Editorial Review:

Within Chile is the driest desert in the world, the highest mountain range in the hemisphere, temperate rainforests, and a piece of Antarctica. In all these areas Chileans have created unique communities and, together, a vibrant nation. Chile's history mirrors its geographic variety. From its pre-colonial period, to its days as a Spanish colony, through its many independent governments, Chile has long been a land of crises and controversy. Beginning with a survey of the land, people, and current government of Chile, the book traces the chronological story of the country. Ten chapters follow the details of Chilean history from the indigenous peoples to the democratic transition after the Pinochet dictatorship. This is the perfect starting point for students and travelers interested in the history and people of Chile.
