Editorial Review:

Feeling "alive" is commonly used to describe the state when you are energized, excited, full of life! And that's exactly what these books inspire -- a feeling of eagerness to explore and discover. Alive! Guides are a refreshing change from the "same-old" guidebooks. They are written for the savvy traveler who is looking for quality and value in accommodations and dining, with a selection of activities to fill the days and nights. Each book's introduction covers the basic travel information, including climate, when to go, what to pack, history, package tours, geography and -- for overseas destinations -- currency concerns and health issues. Daytime pursuits are detailed in the "Sunup to Sundown" section, which cover the best beaches, walking tours, driving excursions, nature trips and sightseeing. Shopping plays a big part, with tips on how to barter in island crafts markets and where to find the best deals. And if you're looking for some fun when the stars come out, turn to the "After Dark" section, where you'll find descriptions of the best discos, cigar bars, theaters, movies, nightclubs and happy hours!

Stephen P Has Been There and Done It 5 out of 5 stars.
31 of 31 people found this review helpful.

I have cruised the Bahamas aboard all kinds of small boats for over 30 years, and I wouldn't go without Stephen P's books. There have been many Bahamas cruising guides written but many fall far short of the complete story.
Stephen P. has spent many years in the Bahamas. His guide info is virtually faultless. His charts are the best and amazingly accurate. This is not always the case with other guides. His stories and "local knowlege" is historic. He spends countless hundreds of hours on sight to obtain the information needed to produce a really good guide. He is an active ham radio operator so you can talk to him anytime and discuss his works.
I guess it's obvious that I love the Guide. Stephen Crow K4CPX

A Must-Have for Boating in the Sea of Abaco 5 out of 5 stars.

An indispensible guide to plan your trip to the Sea of Abaco. Great Charts, Directions, Suggestions. You name it, it's got it. Although, I am geographically-challenged, I had no problem trolling the waters of the Sea of Abaco for a week thanks to the Abaco Guide.

A terrific book for vacation planning 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This is the best book for snorkeling I've ever found. The other books are so vague, they don't tell me much of anything. This one describes all the neat places to walk in from the beach and go snorkeling, how rough or calm the area is, how to get to various snorkeling beaches once I get there, whether the kids can safely swim in each area. It also has all the resorts that have snorkeling off their beaches, which is really nice for people traveling with small children and the airlines and travel stuff we need.

Repeats the excellent tradition of the 1st edition 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The book has very brief descriptions of snorkeling sites at a large number of different places. Most, but not all are Caribbean islands. There are also descriptions of other "traditional" snorkeling places, such as the Yucatan Penninsula and Hawaii. And there are two large sections on snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef and the Galapagos Islands. Several snorkeling sites are listed at each separate location, and useful advice and information is given for most. All sites are rated on a 1 to 5 "starfish" point system. About the only criticism I have of the book is that much of the hotel information seems to be pulled directly from the hotel's advertising about themselves. A little more independent commentary would be nice. The information is still useful as a starting point. Finally, for each location, there is useful information on weather, how to get there, and when to go. If you have the first edition of this book, I see little reason to purchase this new edition, however. I do wish a few other sites or activities had been included, in particular snorkeling with whale sharks off Northwest Australia. That's something that interests me, but there seems very little information on it out there. If you travel to snorkel, and don't have the First Edition, GET THIS ONE!

Editorial Review:

"Best Dives' Snorkeling Adventures" is a guide to the best snorkeling and boat sites. It offers details on shallow reefs, shipwrecks, snorkeling cruises, beach & reef-front resorts, boat tours, and places to swim with dolphins and manatees. In addition, it contains advice on underwater photos and first-aid for coral cuts and sea stings. Finally, the book informs you about sharks--what you need to know.

Editorial Review:

Few islands anywhere have been refashioned by man to the extent of Grand Bahama.

P.J.H. Barratt, a town planner formerly in charge of the development of Freeport, writes from a first-hand knowledge of the island in all its aspects - from the 'island of the great shallows' of early sixteenth century discovery by Europeans, to the spectacular development in more recent times of the new city and resort of Freeport.

Once a barren, pine-covered land, Grand Bahama is now the second most populous of the Bahama Islands. The creation of Freeport was undoubtedly a social and economic experiment of the first importance that did not come into being without first overcoming serious difficulties. Apart from Freeport and a few scattered settlements the island, for the most part, remains unspoiled; tranquil beauty being its dominant characteristic.

The Grand Bahama of today is a major resort destination, an island with an exciting future, facing up to the many challenges posed by an independent, emerging society.

In this new edition (the fourth printing), the author has revised the text, introducing updated information on the many aspects of Grand Bahamian life as well as including several new colour and black and white photographs.

Suggest itineraries, gives details. Not all OutIslands covered 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Interesting approach: Suggest itineraries and give details for the trips. Detailed info but only on NewProv,GrandBah,Abacos,Eleu,Harbour,Cat,Exumas,Andros,Bimini. Skimpy info on out islands. Good complement to more detailed and complete travel book. Includes mailboat info. Gives real prices, not $ signs. Doesn't give low budget accomodations. No good maps.

Editorial Review:

One of America's premier vacation destinations is brought to life by veteran travel writer Ron Charles. Bahamas Guide gives the reader all the information necessary for that perfect getaway for both first-time and return visitors. The 700-plus islands of the Bahamas is close to the US and features beautiful year-round weather. Editorial Review:

Designed as a lively encyclopedia, this includes all the elements that constitute the heritage of modern Bahamians: historical, geographical, economic, political, social and cultural. Key events, institutions, customs and personalities are not just described but evaluated. Yet, as even a dipping will show, this A-Z is far from being entirely strait-laced. Apart from heroes and high-fliers there are plenty of eccentrics and even a few villains. Compiled by the premier historian of "The Bahamas" and four years in the making, this sparkling reference book is the distillation of research and analysis spread over half a century. Printed in colour and beautifully illustrated, it is aimed at both fact-seekers and browsers. It will interest and profit Bahamians, visitors and armchair travellers alike."Macmillan Caribbean A-Zs" are a comprehensive series of reference books that provide an invaluable and entertaining source of information to the countries that comprise the Caribbean region. Highly illustrated and in full-colour throughout, they are a unique 'one-stop' resource to the cultural heritage of a fascinating and richly diverse part of the world.
