Not too helpful.... 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I did not find this book to be helpful in providing information specific to Barbados that I could not find in any free tourist booklet on the island. There is a whole page on "Beach Boys"... there are local men anywhere you may go on vacation that will try to pick up vacationing women. This is not information specific to Barbados. There is a whole page on "What to take": Shoes and socks, underwear, swimsuit, soap, sunscreen, comb, shaving kit, etc, etc. Please!!! I stayed at the Coconut Court Beach Resort which is one of the oldest and most respected family run hotels on the island and it is not even listed in the accomodation sections. I would save your money and pick up the multitude of free guides available on the island.

Editorial Review:

Travel with award-winning author Harry S, Pariser around Barbados and delve into its culinary, cultural and historical treasures. Famed for its beaches and intimate, high quality hotels and inns, Barbados is the Southern Caribbean's crown jewel. This is the only complete guide for this very special Caribbean democracy. Visit plantation-era greathouses, stroll through the Flower Forest and exotic Andromeda Gardens, descend into the depths of Harrison's Cave, fly over the island's dramatic contours by helicopter, take a sunset cruise, descend into the oceanic depths via submarine, or just kick back on one of the island's many spectacular beaches. Local bus service, festivals and events, history and culture, live music spots. It's all covered! Maps, photographs, web sites, useful tips. Humourous, informative, educational, detailed. There is no other guide quite like it!

July 2001 I dove several of the sites reviewed by ms Ryan and Mr Savage
and found their profiles of the dives to be very accurate and
helpful.I hope she and Brian Savage will do a "complete
DG of the Bahamas,I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Needs more vacation details 1 out of 5 stars.

I found this guide pleasant to look through, but not half as helpful as Best Dives of the Caribbean by Hunter Publishing, which gives a lot more detail on the dive sites, places for kids to snorkel, hotels and everything I need to plan a vacation.

A bit of a let down 3 out of 5 stars.

Earlier dive guides I have used have come from the Globetrotter series - who do not have a guide for Barbados, which is what I was looking for. Coming to the "Complete Diving Guide" after the high standards of Globetrotter is something of a disappointment. There is nothing wrong with the book in terms of the content it is providing - it gives information on the sites, some (though by no means all) dive schools, and a little background on the islands. However, the writing style is very narrative - think "what I did on my diving holiday this summer" type essays. The presentation is also a bit dated. It is not a bad guide by any means, but if Globetrotter do get around to publishing on the area, it is almost certain to be a better bet.

Editorial Review:

Wow! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

In a word, Wow! This is a superb "portrait" of this island. The photographs are absolutely stunning. But this isn't just a "postcard" view of Barbados -- there's lots of coverage of the people, history, and culture, too. The author-photographer has been traveling to Barbados for over two decades, and it shows both in his photographs and his extensive text, which gives a solid but concise presentation of Barbados' history in a very readable way without being dry. (Kind of National Geographic style.) And the picture captions are in-depth, presenting little gems of info about the picture subject matter if you're in too much of hurry to read the whole text. I've lived in Barbados, and this has the feel of an insider's view, not just someone who has breezed through the island and shot a few pictures.

Editorial Review:

Barbados, Sun, Sea, Superb! is a photographic-essay coffee-table book about the island of Barbados. It covers, in photographs, maps, and text Barbados's history, culture, people, flora, fauna, geography, and scenery, with a special emphasis on the touristic aspects of the island.

We had a group of 12 College Students constantly fighting over this map because it was so great to use and was very tough. We took it the surfing beaches, Harrisons Cave, and everywhere else on the island. If you are Traveling to Barbados... Please take this map with you. Since we Returned we then turned the map into a poster and it is on the Wall in my Office!

Get ready, Barbados! Here comes the Fab Five! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Of all the super edition books, this was probably my least favorite. There just wasn't a whole lot of action. Anyway, when Melanie's dad wins a trip to the Barbados (from being the best salesman at his job) he and his family are thrilled! Then Mel manages to get all the Fab Five to come and they set out Christmas Day to spend a whole week of fun in the sun! All the girls have boyfriends back home and they certainly don't plan on meeting guys, but things change when they get a load of Marco Montavo, the charming, handsome singer at the villa they are staying out. (he's a jerk!) He's bored on the island where 'nothing exciting happens', so he decides to have some fun by getting all the girls interested in him. His flirting charms work and soon all the girls have a crush on him (even Katie!) But they figure things out in the end and get revenge! I really did like this book, it's just that they spent all their time running around secretly meeting Marco. I'm glad they wised up and realized what great guys they have back home. =)
