Unexpectedly good read 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 19 people found this review helpful.

Cameron's approach beats the other guidebooks in its up to date assessment of the country's politics and history as it relates to each of the regions you plan on visiting. Relevant sidebar info is sprinkled throughout the book to provide the reader with something other than the usual monotonous listings of hotels, restarants, and places to visit--though she knows her stuff here as well. This book is the most currently published of all the other titles out there.

Editorial Review:

Written by an expert, this travel guide to the Dominican Republic features all aspects of holidaying in this destination. It contains information on exploring the coast, as well as exploring inland, with full coverage of the best beaches and associated watersports, and "adventure" tourism - river rafting, climbing Pico Duarte, horse riding, and walking. Extensive listings of hotels, restaurants and car hire are included, as well as comprehensive coverage of national parks. There is a special feature on the history and culture of the Republic.

Editorial Review:

"The small island of Barbados, "the Rock" as it is affectionately called by those who cling to it... has long been recognized as a peculiar place that defies, if not description, at least explanation."

So begins Peter Laurie's introduction to the work of Barbados's leading photographer, Mike Toy. Here his photos are collected for the first time, providing a fascinating and visually stunning portrait of the island and its people. Indeed, a real attempt is made to describe and explain some of the mysteries of this proud nation as well as shedding light on the future of what is undoubtedly the Caribbean's leading tourist destination. It depicts all the subtleties and complexities of a country inextricably linked to its past-a love of cricket being just one example-and how its people have successfully forged a unique Barbadian cultural identity loved all over the world.

In this island portrait comprising over 160 images, Mike Toy takes us on a in-depth tour highlighting not only the major tourist destinations and sights but also revealing their cultural, historical, and artistic significance. Above all, he provides an intimate portrait of the Bajan people themselves-close up-leading their every day lives and clinging determinedly to their beloved "Rock."

Doyle's Guide to Trinidad, Tobago and Barbados 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This guide is another superb resource for cruising sailors from Chris Doyle. Thirty five years of living on a boat while collecting and updating information about sailing in the eastern Caribbean have honed Doyle's ability to include essential details about everything a cruising sailor might want or need.

In this guide for Trinidad, Tobago and Barbados, the combination of detailed charts as well as aerial photos with navigational overlays provides a clear picture of how to get in and out of every harbor safely. For each port there is a wealth of information on the nearest supplies and services for repairs and replacements of the zillion things that might go awry or get dropped overboard when living and traveling on a boat.

Doyle's affection for both the islanders and their environment is reflected in his enthusiastic descriptions of the many places and (and proprietors) to visit while on shore. In addition to details about how to get to and from grocery stores, restaurants, laundry facilities, etc., there are many descriptions of wonderful places to explore on foot or by dinghy. This is particularly helpful in these islands where one needs ideas on where to begin to see the amazing wealth of natural wildlife.

Best of all, the guide is well-written, easy to follow and fun to read.

Editorial Review:

This new, completely updated edition has been expanded to include Guyana. Including 53 sketch charts, aerial photographs, dazzling scenic photography throughout, unsurpassed onshore information with sections on exploring, provisioning, services and restaurants. The guide is linked to the author's website where you can download town maps, GPS waypoints given in the sketch charts and much more.

Somewhat informative, but disappointing 2 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book is well organized and written, but I was never sure how up-to-date the information was. The book was first written back in the 1960's and was last published in 2001. The author does not ease my concerns because in several places in the book he says this is the way it was in the early 1970's, or I went back in 1984 to update this information. It reminds me of listening to my father reminisce about the good old days-pleasent stories, but not always relevant to the way things are today. Also, there are few pictures contained in the book and none of them are in color. This adds to the feel that the book was written in the 1960's and it certainly does not create excitement or motivate anyone to go to the Windward Islands. In summary, the positives are: detailed information on navigation, sailing routes, areas with tricky currents, waves, etc. The negatives: limited and/or outdated information on navigation hazards, buoy locations, places to get provisions, restaurants, hotels, shops etc. This is a pricey book and I would expect it not to be outdated and dull. It appears that the book is slipping from a cruising guide to an autobiography by Mr. Street. I would skip this one.

Editorial Review:

Street’s Guides are the result of his forty-four years of Caribbean experience— his first guide to the Virgin Islands (1964) has been expanded over the years to cover the entire eastern Caribbean. These guides give the mariner all the information needed to safely cruise the area, not only piloting information but also interesting background information on people, places and history.

“In the beginning was the word and the word came from Street. Since 1964 all other guide authors have followed in Street’s and Iolaire’s wake, avoiding the rocks and shoals Street and Iolaire discovered.”
—Patience Wales, Editor, Sail
