OK, But Paul Humann's Book is Much Better 2 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

A few years ago, I bought the Audubon Society Field Guide to Tropical Marine Fishes and found when I tried to use it in the Florida Keys that there were many fish I couldn't identify. People recommended I buy Paul Humann's book, "Reef Fish Identification." The book is more expensive, but I found it to be far more comprehensive and user friendly. For example, many fish look entirely different when in their "juvenile," "initial" or "terminal" phase, and the "Reef Fish Identification" book has clear photos of each of the three stages shown beside each other, and frequently includes photos of alternate color phases as well. The Audubon book usually just shows a picture of the fish in just one phase, and often not a terribly good photo at that. Next to each photo in the Humann book is an excellent line drawing of the fish, highlighting and labeling which features of a fish are most dependable for identification. The Audubon book includes no such diagrams to aid identification. Finally, the Humann book is based upon both an extensive bibliography and collaboration with field biologists, and if the detailed descriptions in his book of definitive features for discriminating species of fish are correct (and experienced scuba divers tell me they are correct) then some of the pictures in the Audubon guide are actually even misidentified as to species. For example, the Audubon picture labeled as a "Leopard Goby" is almost certainly a picture of an "Orange-sided Goby" (if the Humann book is correct about dark lines outlining the orange rectangles being a reliable discriminating feature). If there were no other reef fish identification book available, I would have given the Audubon book more stars, I am usually a great fan of the Audubon Field Guide series, but in comparison with the Humann book it just doesn't rate very well. I should add that I have never met, nor have any private or professional association with, the author of either of these books, so my opinion is not biased by any such affiliation.
Finally, I should add that I am pleased nevertheless to own both of these books because, for many species of fish, fish of the same species can be found in a wide variety of colors and patterns, so you can never study too many photos to get a handle on the range of appearances possible for any given species. Buy the Humann book if you can just afford one book, but owning both books is even better!

Editorial Review:

Covering tropical marine fishes of the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, Florida, the Bahamas, and Bermuda, this field guide by C. Lavett Smith (curator emeritus, Department of Ichthyology, American Museum of Natural History in New York) sets the tropical-fish standard. There are 417 truly magnificent color photographs evincing the glories of the coral reefs and full-text descriptions for more than 400 species, each with its own range map. In addition, the guide includes maps of the regions, more than 100 fish anatomy illustrations, and close to 800 more brief species descriptions. Easy to use and understand, lightweight, and sturdily constructed for travel, the field guide is a great boon for one's snorkeling or scuba-diving vacations. --Stephanie Gold

the most comprehensive guide in the desert, I especially liked the not recommended restaurants. rarely do you see a guide that dares to do that. It is obvious that this book is not advertiser driven and can tell the truth. Excellent!

Screw War & Peace...buy this book!!!!!!!!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I have been caught in the desert many times and now will never starve.

Cannot say enough positive things about this text. The only change I would ever dream of making is perhaps including a thermos.

Editorial Review:

This frank and thorough guide to selected established and lesser-known restaurants, including comments on food quality, pricing, and dress codes, covers the nine resort cities of the Coachella Valley--collectively known as Palm Springs--which include the communities of Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Bermuda Dunes, Indio, and Desert Hot Springs. Presented in an accessible style, the book is divided into resort and hotel dining, casino dining, and "palaces" and bistros. Smaller chapters are devoted to mountain getaways, gay-friendly eateries, novelties, kid-friendly eateries, and kosher options.

Magnificent! 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Extraordinary photography, combined with intelligent, concise, even poetic text. I am English, but I have lived in Boston for many years. Bermuda is perhaps my favorite island--for its civility, its quiet beauty, a little touch of England in the middle of the Atlantic. This book captures Bermuda as I have seen no other book do ... perhaps because it focusses on the small things: the tiny flower known as Bermudiana, the young schoolgirl gazing deep into the camera ... The picture captions are concise, but packed with information; the author chooses and rations his words carefully! There's also, for those who want it, a complete text which conveys the history of the island. A small quibble: there's no information about hotels, restaurants, etc. However, this is not a guidebook, but rather a coffee-table "documentary" book, and in that department it is incomparable.

A "Bermudaful" book. 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This elegant photography book provides a thoughtful and perceptive portrait of a genteel world all of its own. It makes one think that to escape modern life, the place to go is Bermuda. There is a wide variety among the hundred fifty or so photographs, from close-ups of people to scenic panoramas, all in rich, lush colors. The beach scenes and sunsets are breathtaking. A bonus is the extensive historical background presented in an easy to absorb reader-friendly style. Particularly interesting are the stories of how Bermuda found itself squeezed between England and the Thirteen Colonies during the Revolutionary War and between North and South in the American Civil War. The author reveals that there were no cars on Bermuda until the 1940s and describes the more recent transformation of the island into a corporate center, "the Switzerland of the Atlantic." The care and craftsmanship that went into the creation of this work is obvious. This is literally a "Bermudaful" book. And do not forget to catch the sweetheart on page 17!

Mistakes, Mistakes, Mistakes do not buy!!! 1 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

We recently purchased this guidebook 2008 edition for an October 2007 trip to Bermuda. The first & biggest mistake-Wyndham Resort Spa & Fantasea dive center no longer exists! The hotel has been closed for at least 1 year.I dont understand how an entire resort can close, in one of the most popular areas, yet Frommer's does not KNOW THIS?!?! unacceptable! Especially if they claim the books are updated every year, clearly this is not possible. Second,MR Onion is closed, a'very popular' local place no longer exists. Third, Tuscany, the best italian eatery in Bermuda where all the locals go...also no longer exists. I even checked the online website in November (after our vacation) and found the same incorrect information listed that should be corrected. Bermuda is a small island & it is disappointing to learn that even with an island the size of Bermuda they can't get it right. Shame on them!
Update: I noticed positive feedback from another user & she writes "I am planning a trip to Bermuda and never having been there before I found this book very helpful. I know where to go for the activities and when to go for the events I wish to see." My response to that- how can you give a positive travel guide review when you haven't been to the places the book recommends???? We ALSO thought we knew where to go- a dive resort and spa, so I could go diving and my cousin could get a massage- yet the entire RESORT was closed for more than a year!!! So she gives a positive review - which makes no sense- yet hasn't confirmed these places and events are still active. It wasn't just one entire resort they missed but three very popular (according to them) attractions on one of the smallest countries in the world! Whoever wrote that positive review is not looking out for the general public- maybe she works for the company.

This is an elegantly produced book, with thoughtful and scholarly writing by Sylvia Shorto, who is one of Bermuda's most knowledgable antiques experts and whose contribution lifts this book out of the realm of just another pretty Bermuda picture book. Ian MacDonald-Smiths pictures are well done and provide an excellent overview of the development of Bermudian architecture and style.

Help at last for anyone moving to a warm climate 5 out of 5 stars.

Anyone who has ever moved (or is thinking of moving) to a new country will find this book invaluable. Tracey gives much needed advice on survival and goes right to the nitty-gritty of everyday life. Especially fascinating for people interested in Bermuda, this guide is a must-read for anyone moving to a different culture and climate.

Well written combination of thoughtfull advice and humor 4 out of 5 stars.

Excellent reading for people planning to visit Bermuda, live there, or simply for those who travel the globe via armchair. Tracey deals with the everday trials and tribulations of life in a way that avoids painting a negative potrait of this island paradise but has enough guts to stress the importance of being able to cope. Well done Tracey! very entertaining!. I can't wait to visit!.

Fun-to-read useful tips for living in Bermuda 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is an absolute must-read for anyone planning to live in Bermuda! It was fun to read in the first weeks I was on the island, when I still thought it couldn't all be true. But it is. The mould, the cockroaches, the ants, the humidity... In the three and a half years I have been living in Bermuda I experienced most of it. Yes, you do have to put salt in the fridge and rice doesn't work to keep it dry. You need a big fridge in Bermuda to store anything save from ants (sugar, candy, marmalade) and bugs (pasta) and to keep it dry (salt, flour, cookies).
Every time I saw the mould on my leather couch, jacket and shoes it reminded me of Tracey's words: keep it moving... (Ventilation is key too.)
And yes, my hair was curlier because of the high humidity. But that wasn't the worst thing about it. You start appreciating winter just because it's less humid and you don't sweat with every step you take...
But it gets cold in winter too. However, I never sat reading in the walk-in closet like Tracey did because it was the warmest place in the house. I wish I had had a walk-in closet...
Thank you very much Tracey for all those useful tips!
How I miss Bermuda...

Jeannette
