Required Reading 4 out of 5 stars.

The Reader's Companion to Cuba is one of an excellent series in the Readers Companion books from Harvest. Edited by Alan Ryan, who edited all of the books in this series, this book is required reading for anyone expecting to travel to Cuba or to any student that is studying Cuba to any degree. The book is a chronicle of Cuba from the mid 1800s to the 90s seen through the eyes of various witnesses including such literary greats as Langston Hughes, Amiri Bakari(formally Leroi Jones, poet and playwrite of the such works as the Dutchman ). One simply can not write a book about Cuba without including something about the late legend, Ernest Hemingway. Arnold Samuelson, Norman Lewis, and Martha Gellhorn, one of Hemingway's many former wives fulfill this task beautifully. It also includes an account from sports great Tommy Lasorda who played in Cuba during the off season. There's even an account about mob activities during the reign of Fugencio Batista by Frank Ragano and Selwyn Raab.

Editorial Review:

A gathering of some of the best travel writing ever about the most intriguing hot spot in the Caribbean, this book includes work by Hemingway, Langston Hughes, Thomas Merton, Anais Nin, Frederic Remington, James Michener, Tommy Lasorda, and others.

A muddled view of the Caribbean 1 out of 5 stars.
12 of 17 people found this review helpful.

A very poorly written muddle of a confused account of random events of Caribbean history and social issues. The Author continually seems to get confused between what is the indigenous population and what is the current population of the Caribbean islands. He refers to the resistance of the indigenous population and then goes on to discuss a slave rebellion a century later as if they were all one and the same. In one section he describes the peaceful, docile natives fighting fiercely (a contradiction of terms in itself) but fails to inform the reader that the Arawaks and the Caribs were two entirely different peoples living in the Caribbean. While the Arawaks were indeed peaceful and docile the Caribs were anything but! He also seems to miss the point that the Caribs were in the midst of their own very bloody conquest of the Caribbean when the Spanish arrived on the scene.
He creates a confusing picture of what are issues and what were issues. He freely wanders through the centuries leaving the reader wondering whether he is addressing today's issues or one's of long ago. The only theme of connectivity is the Caribbean. His statistics are more self-serving than objective.
If you are looking for a book of jumbled social issues that provides no useful information on the Caribbean then I heartily recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

Why have noted Western intellectuals-from George Bernard Shaw to Jean-Paul Sartre to Susan Sontag-embraced the vision of various "revolutionary" societies, often in their most repressive historical phase, while downgrading (and yet enjoying) the benefits of Western liberal pluralistic political cultures? How have the delusions and dreams of many Western observers of the Soviet Union, China, Cuba, and other socialist states contributed to a moral and political double standard? Paul Hollander explores these crucial questions in a remarkable study of travel reports on socialist countries written by Western visitors. Observing that political pilgrims represent a tradition of seeking alternatives to flawed social arrangements at home, Hollander also suggests that underlying these visits is a quest for meaning, purpose, and sense of community that intellectuals feel increasingly deprived of in secular and individualistic societies in the West. "Political Pilgrims," listed among "The Notable Books of the Year" in the "New York Times Book Review," is a provocative study of the relationship between political commitment, perception, and moral sensibility. Originally published by Oxford University Press in 1981.

Cuba and magical pictures 5 out of 5 stars.

I was so surprised that I actually found 2 pages of pictures from my Aunt Amelia Pelaez'house in this book!!! And what pictures!! Shows her bedroom perfectly. Other pictures are of a real and depressing Cuba. Some people think Cuba is a Tourist paradise and they forget the citizens of that same heavenly paradise! Cuban people are dying of hunger and many parts of the city are hidden from tourists, they're not allowed to see the real Cuba, which yu can see in this book. Wonderful pictures of Cuba! Bought 4 kept one gave others as Christmas presents!

Editorial Review:

An elegant hotel now serving as an elementary school...the parlor of a grand mansion transformed into a barbershop...these are Havana’s most intimate spaces. Having enjoyed four years of unprecedented access to the private interiors of Cuba’s capital, Andrew Moore has created an unrivaled portrait of both its legendary historic architecture and the city’s inner life. These rich and elegiac images capture intimate details and sensuous moods, creating an open-ended drama that unfolds with each viewing. Painterly light lends grandeur to Havana’s most unlikely landmarks. Andrew Moore’s work is distinguished by its singular perspective, one that combines a documentarian’s love of subject and story with an unexpected poetry.

Editorial Review:

When the Soviet Union dissolved, so did the easy credit, cheap oil, and subsidies it had provided to Cuba. The bottom fell out of the Cuban economy, and many expected that Castro’s revolution—the one that had inspired the Left throughout Latin America and elsewhere—would soon be gone as well. More than a decade later, the revolution lives on, albeit in a modified form. Following the collapse of Soviet communism, Castro legalized the dollar, opened the island to tourism, and allowed foreign investment, small-scale private enterprise, and remittances from exiles in Miami. Capitalism, God, and a Good Cigar describes what the changes implemented since the early 1990s have meant for ordinary Cubans: hotel workers, teachers, priests, factory workers, rap artists, writers, homemakers, and others.

Based on reporting by journalists, writers, and documentary filmmakers since 2001, each of the essays collected here covers a particular dimension of contemporary Cuban society, revealing what it is like to have lived, for more than a decade, suspended between communism and capitalism. There are pieces on hip hop musicians, fiction writing and censorship, the state of ballet and the performing arts, and the role of computers and the Internet. Other essays address the shrinking yet still sizeable numbers of true believers in the promise of socialist revolution, the legendary cigar industry, the changing state of religion, the significance of the recent influx of money and people from Spain, and the tensions between recent Cuban emigrants and previous generations of exiles. Including more than seventy striking documentary photographs of Cuba’s people, countryside, and city streets, this richly illustrated collection offers keen, even-handed insights into the abundant ironies of life in Cuba today.

Bless you, mom and dad 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I thank God daily for the decision my parents made when sending me alone out of Cuba . Since my parents thought that they could say they were going on vacation, they had also packed to leave with me but the militia was too wise for that and held my mom's and dad's visa at the docks since they had not left everything to the government. At the precise moment they decided to send me alone (8-05-61)on the last cargo ferry that left Havana with sugar, under the care of Pedro Pan Operation. I was starting fourth grade that September of 1961 and I would have gone through the same ordeal Teresa went through. I admire Flor Teresa for the loyalty to her parents and family, for her courage of making the best of the moment and for her maturity at such young age. I believe that young as well as old will get teachings from this book. Teachingsof survival, of meeting with your goals, of distinguishing what is right from what is wrong and of giving a value to the simple things in life. As an adult Flor Teresa must be an extraordinary human being.

Editorial Review:

Born in Cuba in the 1950s, the author was a child when revolution swept her homeland and Fidel Castro came to power. While her family suffered injustice and austerity after their plantation was seized, her grandmother and Afro-Cuban nanny remained strong. They taught her the healing wisdom of curanderismo and the magical beliefs of Santeria. This memoir offers a heartfelt view of Cuba's history and culture.

too bias 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I first met the writer during the book fair at the Miami Dade Community College on November 11, 2007. During the conference he spoke about his book and also made some anti embargo comments. Mr. Estrada spends more time accusing past Cuban dictators such as Batista, Grau and Machado of criminal acts and at the same time idolizes a criminal such as Ernesto " Che" Guevara. At no time does Mr. Estrada refers to Fidel Castro as a corrupt dictator that has committed more crimes on the Cuban people than all of Cuba's past "Presidents" put together. Nevertheless the book is well written if he had balance fairly the political history of Cuba.

Editorial Review:

Alfredo José Estrada's intimate ties to Havana form the basis for this "autobiography," written as though from the city's own heart. Covering the island's five hundred year history, Estrada portrays the adventurers and dreamers who left their mark on Havana, including José Martí, martyr for Cuban independence; and Ernest Hemingway, the most American of writers who became an unabashed Habanero.
Deeply personal and affecting, Havana is the accessible and complete story of the city for the history buff and armchair traveler alike.

Editorial Review:

During the mid 19th century the US Senate entertained a bill to expand South and annex Cuba, to become not only a Caribbean empire but the greatest slaveholding nation in history. The 1860 publication of To Cuba and Back detailing, in Dana's words, .the despotic civil government, compulsory religion uniformity, and slavery.. changed many minds. With astute observations of the land and the people this book became a rallying cry for change.

Editorial Review:

From the indigenous simple huts known as bohios to elegant neoclassical villas, from the grand palaces of the Spanish occupation to luxurious quintas or country mansions, all the secrets and enchantments of Cuban life, past and present, remain intact today in the city of Havana, in the towns of Trinidad, Camagüey, and Santiago de Cuba, and in the countryside. This superbly illustrated book reveals a Cuban architectural heritage that is often ignored or hidden from the view of visitors to the island. Drawing upon local archives, museum records, memoirs, diaries, and other native sources, Llilian Llanes describes Cuba's architectural history from the sixteenth century to the nineteenth. The evolution of Cuban architecture, influenced by climate and social conditions, parallels the cultural, political, and economic history of the island, and the houses and their decoration reflect periods of greater or lesser prosperity, as well as social inequalities. Courtyards, balconies, galleries, balustrades, grilles, and louvered doors: the evocative photographs, all in color, illustrate the subject magnificently with exterior and interior views plus close-ups of details. Extended captions explain the development of architectural features and the houses themselves over centuries and provide fascinating details of Cuban daily life, customs, and pastimes. 168 color photographs and a map.
