Fantastic Guide-The Real Deal 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Before purchasing this book, I did a bit of research on the different guides available. One had a lot of advertisements, but was popular. It was more like a Frommers travel book. This one was written by the guy who actually used equipment relied upon by chartmakers for local depth soundings. You could tell by his "local" hints that he really took the time and effort to give you the insider's view. From recomming "Mr.Fantastic" (a local boat vendor who sold us delicious lobster), to recommendations on local restaurants at each of our island stops along the way, this book was fantastic. The black and white pages made it all the more authentic as not being overly commercialized. In each port he gave highly reliable waypoints which I fed into my Garmin GPS, and everything worked like clockwork. His depth soundings in the anchorages were highly reliable as well. Our crew of 6 sailors, all passionate for adventure in the Windward Islands, raved about this book. Other books were aboard, but this one quickly became the one that we relied upon. It was concise and to the point, and we really enjoyed using it. Accolades to Mr. Pavlidis. This is a winner!!

Editorial Review:

With 80 sketch charts this is the most comprehensive guide covering The Windward Islands. The Windward Islands Guide contains GPS waypoints, approaches and routes, anchorages, dive sites, an extensive appendix, photos and a bibliography. As with all of Steve's guides it contains sections on history, marina services, and much more useful info.

Our most-used guide book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

We spent spent two months in Grenada, St Vincent, and the Grenadines on our sailboat in the winter of 2008. We had seven guide books for this area -- Rum & Reggae was our favorite. For exploring, hiking, snorkeling, eating: this book consitently recommended places and activities that were more interesting and less touristy. Sure, we used the others books too, but we used this one more.

Note that we were living on our sailboat and did not use their hotel recommendations.

We've since bought the Rum & Reggae books for the rest of the areas that we plan to explore next winter.

Editorial Review:

The 1st edition of this book was selected by the Caribbean Tourism Organization as Best Guide Book to the Caribbean These unspoiled islands lie at the southern end of the Caribbean chain and are just now being discovered by tourists. St. Vincent, with the oldest botanical garden in the Americas, is dominated by a huge volcano, its peak usually hidden in clouds. The Grenadines include Bequia, Mustigue, Mayreau and many other islands, each one a unique gem. Grenada, with its pristine reefs, is the source for a third of the world's nutmeg; the smell of spices is everywhere in the air. This guide is the best preparation for a visit to these islands, with full details on accommodations and restaurants, getting around, sightseeing, climate, history and geography. Activities covered include sailing, fishing, kayaking, diving, hiking, horseback riding and shopping. The book covers Grenada, St. Vincent, Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, Tobago Cays, Mayreau, Union Island, Palm Island, Petit St. Vincent, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Color throughout.

A guide to St Vincent, Grenada and the Grenadines. It covers Mustique, Bequia, Palm Island, Tobago Cays, Carriacou, Mayreau, Petit St Vincent, St Vincent and Grenada, at the southern end of the Caribbean arc, just below St Lucia. St Vincent has the oldest botanical gardens in the Americas; on Bequia, some islanders still harpoon whales as their ancestors did; Grenada has pristine reefs and abundant natural beauty; and tiny Mustique, home to countless celebrities, has verdant mountains. The series of "Adventure Guides" are about living more intensely, waking up to your surroundings and truly experiencing all that you encounter. Each book offers a mix of practical travel information along with activities designed for everyone, no matter what their age or ability. Comprehensive background information - history, culture, geography and climate - presents a knowledge of each destination and its people. Regional chapters take you on an introductory tour, with stops at museums, historic sites and local attractions. The volumes also cover: places to stay and eat; transportation to, from and around your destination; practical concerns; useful websites; e-mail addresses; and tourism contacts. Detailed regional and town maps feature walking and driving tours.

July 2001 I dove several of the sites reviewed by ms Ryan and Mr Savage
and found their profiles of the dives to be very accurate and
helpful.I hope she and Brian Savage will do a "complete
DG of the Bahamas,I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Editorial Review:

A comprehensive guide to the southern islands of the Eastern Caribbean island chain, including Dominica, Martinique, St Lusia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Tobago and Barbados. Only an hour's flying time from the better-known islands to the north, they offer sites infrequently dived, dive boats with six or fewer divers, and marine life rarely seen in more heavily dived areas (such as black coral, frogfish, seahorses and manta rays). The guide focuses on information. It contains a description of each island, including apres dive activities, an overview of the diving environment, rules, regulations and safety information, site plans and maps, and fact panels about marine life. The descriptions of the dive facilities are based on interviews with all operators and there are at-a-glance summary tables of the facilities.

Too many adverts 2 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Doyle's info was very good and the color arial photos and mini charts are very usefull. The book is 9 inches by 6 inches and has 400 pages, however if you were to remove the advertizments and touristy photos you would probably end up with about 275 pages of usefull info.

One of my favorite travel guides ever. 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This is one of my favorite travel guides, ever, period. Even though this book is aimed at sailors, it has plenty of helpful information for land travelers too. Plus it has a lot of information I've never found in another travel guide. The best example is this. One beautiful night as we sat on our terrace enjoying the 180 degree view of the southern skies, I turned to my travel partner and said, "Did you print off those star charts so we can identify the southern cross?" His response. "Uh oh, I never got around to that."

The next day we looked all over the Island of Bequia for a star chart. We were laughed out of stores, some of which even catered to sailors. At one point I suggested maybe the Sailors Guide we have back at the villa will have a star chart. We agreed it was not likely but hot and tired, we decided to go back and see. We get back, look, and sure enough there it is - a star chart of the southern skies along with a date and time table for determining where everything should be and when. Oh my goodness. We had a chart all along. Thank you Sailors Guide!!

We used that star chart every night for the rest of the week and had a blast locating and identifying all the constellations we could see. It was fascinating watching the southern cross gradually rotate around the point in the sky where the south axis of the earth intersects with the southern sky. Ah, the pace of life on Bequia and the joy of a guide book that delivers way more than expected.

Editorial Review:

This new edition features updated color sketch charts with GPS coordinates. Covering the islands from Martinique south through Grenada, the guide includes all the latest information on everything from reefs to customs procedures to the best bars and restaurants. Also included is a 40 page color directory of services.

Not a Cruising Guide 4 out of 5 stars.

While this book is beautiful and informative, one should not expect a current cruising guide to these islands. The photography is excellent and the accompanying text provides valuable, if slightly dated, insights to the island culture.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

After making several trips to the Grenadines, I have found this book to capture it all. The pictures and script are wonderful. It is a book I have wanted since my first trip to Mustique and am so glad to finally own it.

Editorial Review:

St Vincent and the Grenadines are some of the least visited Caribbean islands, but are nonetheless beautiful because of this. Mike Toy has photographed throughout the chain of islands, including Bequia, Mustique and St Vincent itself and has captured each island wonderfully.

The real scoop for the tourist visiting St. Vincent 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is a good over view book that expands, but does not replace an excellent travel annual published by the St. Vincent travel bureau. The author is explicit about specific companies and people who can render service, such as diving. She also updates situations that may have changed since recorded in an older travel book. She clearly loves the islands and this comes through. Not expensive, and well worth adding. Books about St. Vincent are few enough.

Editorial Review:

St. Vincent and the Grenadines have so much to offer the visitor. St. Vincent itself has breathtaking volcanic mountains, fertile valleys famous for their fruit and vegetables, archaeological sites, ancient fishing villages, and much more.

The harbors and anchorages of the Grenadines are meeting places for sailors and yachts from all over the world. Special emphasis has been given to providing the right sort of information needed on sailing vacations throughout the area.

Appreciation of all these attractions is enhanced by the author's brief historical detail.
