Editorial Review:

Mention the British Virgin Islands, and people immediately think of the “yachting capital of the world.” However, with Anegada lobster, local conch, fresh papaya, mangos, and passion fruit galore, the British Virgin Islands are home to much more than brilliant sun and tranquil waters. In fact, the islands are brimming with the best local ingredients, recipes, and chefs in all of the Caribbean.

In this mouthwatering guide, Paul Spicer takes you on a tour of the region and shares the delectable secrets of its cooking. Visit the Sage Mountain National Park on Tortola, where you’ll find fruit in every direction and encounter the sweet-and-sour tang of local mango chutneys—the perfect complement to a roti, an East Indian crepe-like wrap filled with meat or vegetables. Discover the best places to get callaloo, a Caribbean version of gumbo. Get an insider’s recommendations for the most romantic dining destinations and for hidden beachside pubs.

Part cookbook and part travel guide, The British Virgin Islands: The Hometown Lowdown Guide to Travel and Taste introduces you to the finest seaside restaurants and recipes, offers a peek inside island kitchens, and provides a colorful evocation of life in the British Virgin Islands.

A must read for any visitor to the Virgin Islands 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Even if you aren't a yachtsman this book is a must when visiting the Virgin Island particularly the British Virgins. There is information on the island's beaches, restaurants and other features that are very relevant. Its spiral bound for constant use and a handy size too. The publishers rely on a demand for reprinting this guide on a regualar basis. Unlike other travel books where advertisers have heavy influence on content, the Cruising Guide must rely on the quality of it's content to prosper. Gator

I really love this book..it is really well written and incredibly informative. I would love to read anything Lawson Wood decided to write next!

Great photos & maps too. I especially like the little tidbits of information set off in blue boxes throughout the book.

An Excellent Guide. 5 out of 5 stars.

This series of guides has a well-established format - which, in this instance, has been used to very good effect by an Author who knows what he is doing.

Beginning with an explanation of how the book should be used, there are keys, legends and icons to be understood. These are placed next to each dive site throughout the book as an instant means of identifying the type and standard of diving involved. Not popular with everyone - but very useful for those who like them. Next is an introductory chapter which provides plenty of information vital to anyone contemplating a visit. This is followed by a large section on diving and snorkelling in general, before the book gets down to specifics - all of which provides an excellent "lead-in."

Commencing with the USVI, this section kicks off with an introduction to the country and then goes on to cover 72 specific dive sites throughout St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John. This is followed by similar information on the BVI before tackling 60 dive sites found throughout Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Anegada. The book then concludes with chapters on the marine environment, photography, health & safety and a bibliography.

Lawson Wood is an immensely capable and experienced underwater photographer and author. Altogether, the photography is well above the average standard normally encountered in such guides as this and it says much for Mr Wood's skills that I was unable to find a single poor photograph within the book.

In Summary; an excellent and well-presented book produced by a talented writer and photographer - and one that will not disappoint anyone contemplating a visit to the Virgin Islands.

A Beautiful Book! 5 out of 5 stars.

From Back Cover:

"Columbus came to the British Virgin Islands - named them, in fact, for St. Ursula and her 11,000 virgin companions. So did Danes, Dutch, and Quakers, buccaneers, Spanish galleons and British warships. Now sailors still ply these waters in droves, for they are among the finest cruising grounds on the planet; divers and snorkelers revel in the crystal-clear waters; and land-based visitors enjoy a laid-back island lifestyle in the near-perfect year-round climate."

Editorial Review:

However you see yourself in the British Virgin Islands, sailing up the Sir Francis Drake Channel from Tortola to Virgin Gorda, reveling in the island protected waters and fresh trade winds; relaxing on a quintessential white sand beach fringed with palm trees or snorkeling over living coral reefs; you'll collect images that will stay with you a lifetime. So enjoy these images of a collection of small islands that live in a vast blue sea, produced by a talented photographer that has lived and worked in the BVI for many years.

An essential guide to BVI diving and snorkeling 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This book picks out the twenty-one best diving sites in the British Virgin Islands and gives a page or two of descriptive text about each. Each dive site has one or more pictures to show the reader what to expect. Each dive site also has some general descriptions such as the typical depth, the current condidtions, how to access the site, and what expertise is required. There is a map on which all of the sites are located. There is a rating system the book uses to inform the diver whether a place is suitable for a beginner or an expert. The book also serves as a general guide to the BVI, including history, food, culture, lodging, and tourist information. The book includes some helpful tips on diving in the BVI and warns about the dangers underwater.

Editorial Review:

Comprising some 40 islands and cays in the northeast corner of the Caribbean, the British Virgin Islands are low-key and uncommercial. Topside, they offer lush subtropical forests and endless pristine beaches. Underwater, divers and snorkelers delight in coral-covered pinnacles, caverns, walls and shipwrecks, including the famed 19th-century RMS Rhone. Once a notorious pirate hideaway, today's British Virgin Islands continue to be a sailors' paradise and are counted among the Caribbean's premier yachting destinations. This book describes 63 of the British Virgin Islands' best dive sites, with full-color photos throughout.

You'll get specific information on:

  • depth range, access and conditions
  • Common and hazardous marine life
  • Topside activities and attractions
  • Diving services, live-aboards and yacht charters
  • 8 easy-to-read maps

Diving NOT a Snorkeling Guide 1 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

The title is misleading, therefore only 1 star. There is only one paragraph devoted to snorkeling. It is, however a great 4 star diving guide. Great marine life pictures.

This book is useless as a snorkeling guide. 1 out of 5 stars.

The title is very misleading. If you are looking for a guide to snorkeling in the USVI, look elseware. The space devoted to snorkeling involves approximently five sentences. I got more information from my Fodor's!

Buy the new edition instead 1 out of 5 stars.

[Bad info] for snorkelers, and the site information is flimsy. But Lonely Planet just published a new edition of this book. ...It's MUCH better than this sorry, 10-year-old book, and the pictures are incredible!

This does suck for snorkelers. But Lonely Planet just put out a new edition of this guide. I bought if off their website, www...(sorry Amazon!). It's MUCH better than this tired old book, and the photos are incredible!

Snorkelers Beware 1 out of 5 stars.

Wrong book for those who enjoy snorkeling!! There is great snorkeling in St. Thomas but you will not find it in this book!!
