Editorial Review:

This opening fold-out contains a general map of Vienna to help you visualize the 6 large districts discussed in this guide, and 4 pages of valuable information, handy tips and useful addresses.

Discover Vienna through 6 districts and 6 maps

Stephansdom
Freyung/ Hofburg
Ring/ Josefstadt/ Alsergrund
Leopoldstadt/ Prater
Karlsplatz/ Wienzeile/ Belvedere
Schönbrunn/ Hietzing

For each district there is a double-page of addresses (restaurants — listed in ascending order of price — cafés, bars, tearooms, baths, music venues and stores) followed by a fold-out map for the relevant area with the essential places to see (indicated on the map by a star *). These places are by no means all that Vienna has to offer but to us they are unmissable. The grid-referencing system (A B2) makes it easy for you to pinpoint addresses quickly on the map.

Transportation and hotels in Vienna
The last fold-out consists of a transportation map and 4 pages of practical information that include a selection of hotels.

A thematic index lists all the sites and addresses featured in this guide.

Editorial Review:

Heinz Tesar's architecure is associated with holistic ideas, and it is value-conservative in this sense. But at the same time, the architecture relates to its time, is modern, frank and open to consensus in a subjective dialectic between connection and isolation. However, the holistic concept is not concerned with hierarchical orders, but with relative weighting in a denomination process. He works from a fictitious, almost ritualized dialog situation, in which the levels for coming closer to a building idea can be accessed - in terms of drawing and of building itself.

Simply the best. 5 out of 5 stars.

I planned a recent trip to Vienna w/ this guide & it proved indispensable. Sharp, concise, fun & up-to-date - The Rough Guides are the best.

Informative, fun, and opinionated 5 out of 5 stars.

I found this book to be highly valuable in my trip to Vienna. I found the restaurant and hotel descriptions, short, useful, and (at least for the restaurants that I went to) spot-on. The guides to the various sites (Belvedere, Schoenbrunn, etc.) are also informative, and somewhat opinionated, which different readers will find either useful or irritating. All in all, definitely worth the money.

Editorial Review:

The Rough Guide to Vienna is the ultimate guide to Austria’s dazzling capital city. This new edition includes a full-colour section showcasing Vienna’s highlights, from the magnificent gothic cathedral to the monumental imperial boulevards of the Ringstrasse. The following chapters give evocative accounts of all the sights, from the Hapsburg palaces to the cutting-edge galleries of the new Museums Quartier. For every district there are up-to-the-minute reviews of the city’s best hotels, restaurants, bars and classic coffeehouses. Beyond the city, the guide gives lively accounts of day-trips to the spa town of Baden, the monastery at Klosterneuberg and elsewhere. Maps and plans accompany every chapter and the ''contexts'' section gives an informed commentary on Vienna’s history, musical heritage and contemporary culture.

Baedeker's Austria - Not What It Used To Be 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I just purchased the latest edition of this book and am comparing it to one I have from 1984. I would rate the 1984 edition as a 5 star. This newest one is lacking.

The size format has changed, but this is of no consequence to the content. What's missing from the newer edition are sections of the "Practical Information" section. The older edition had lists of the Castles, Schlosshotels, Country Houses, Monasteries and Religious House; and these antiquities are some of the main attractions of this beautiful country.

The newer edition contains none of these, and the space has been taken with lists of Information Offices, Water Sports and Winter Sports Centres, etc. It certainly appears - disappointingly - that the focus of this used to be great guide has changed. Good, it is; but no longer great. 4 stars

an art lovers' guide to umbria 4 out of 5 stars.
28 of 28 people found this review helpful.

The Blue Guide is the most exhaustive guide on art in Umbria I came across. Usually this fairly small - and touristically not yet overexploited - region is treated together with Tuscany and/or Le Marches. So if you really want to focus your trip only on Umbria and art is your main concern, this is the guide to take along.

It must be said that visually the guide has not much to offer : the lay-out is conservative and illustrations are kept to a minimum (no pictures, shaky pen drawings only). The city maps are very helpful.

The depth of information offered is however staggering - and to a certain extent misleading : even the most insignificant borough gets jubilant descriptions of frescoes, oil paintings, sculptures and other works of art that are on display. Often however the actual quality of the art collections shown a.o. in the local pinacothecas of the smaller hill villages is rather disappointing and not really worth the trip unless you are fanatically obsessed with medieval and early renaissance art and want to see every scrap that is available.

What is really lacking in these guides is a rating system that makes Michelin Guides so useful for planning excursions, because it would allow you to weigh more or less objectively the different options that are open to you. The Michelin Guide for Italy is however totally insufficient if you want to focus your visit exclusively on Umbria and want to see more than Assisi, Orvieto and Perugia.

Editorial Review:

Along with its near neighbor Tuscany, Umbria is an increasingly popular destination for its beautiful landscapes and charming towns such as Perugia, Assisi, Orvieto, Spoleto, and Todi. This is the only guide dedicated to this region.

A view of Vienna from a native. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I happened to pick up this book in an ebay auction after two visits there. Paul Hoffman is a Vienna native and has written
extensively about the city and his native land elsewhere. The book is unique in describing points of interest in the woods which surround Vienna on the south and west. Points of interest such as churches, monuments, restaurants, homes and palaces are described in the detail which only a native can. A good example
are facts about the suicide of Crown Prince Rudolph in the woods in 1889 which I have not found published elsewhere.
If you love Vienna, you'll love this little book.

Editorial Review:

Paul Hofmann, a foreign correspondent for the New York Times, offers a fine meditation on the Vienna Woods, a tract of gladed forest five times bigger than the combined boroughs of New York, geographically the last gasp of the Alps before Austria opens onto the great central European plain. In those forests, Hofmann tells us, lie the origins of many great works of the imagination: the later symphonies of Beethoven, several Schubert sonatas, Mozart's The Magic Flute, and, most famously, Richard Strauss's 1868 opera Tales from the Vienna Woods, which instilled in the Viennese a sense that the woods had to be protected from the growing city on their fringe. Thanks to the play of art and memory, the woods thrive today; as Hofmann remarks, "No other major European capital can boast such a large and safe recreational area."
