Writing is good, but difficult to use 2 out of 5 stars.
9 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I used this book during a three day visit I made to Vienna. I only used the book in Vienna and therefore, I can not critique the book for the rest of Austria. However, based on the coverage of Vienna, I would have a difficult time recommending this book. The main flaw with the guide is the index which is inadequate. For example, if you want to find the opening hours of one of the museums in Vienna, you have the skim through the entire Vienna section of the book in hopes that the name of the museum will jump out at you because the museum will most likely not be in the index. This in itself is terribly frustrating.

This is the only book that I used, so I can not say if one of the other guide books would be a better option. Just be aware that the Rough Guide Austria has its flaws.

Editorial Review:

This Rough Guide is the perfect companion for any Tyrolean adventure. In-depth coverage of the country’s contemporary culture from Linz’s virtual arts festival to the floating opera of Bregenz and the world-class concert venues of Vienna, the Rough Guide includes practical listings to fill the itineraries of travellers with varied tastes and budgets. There is sound advice on outdoor pursuits, from hiking spectacular alpine passes to skiing in the Tyrol. This edition features a brand-new full-colour section with the country’s highlights, selected by the authors to help the reader find the best things to see and experience. Illustrated with stunning photos and accurate user-friendly maps, the guide is indispensable for any traveller.

Previous Edition MUCH Better 2 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The current edition of Time Out Vienna is about half the size of the previous one. The previous edition was wonderful, with much more information on cultural sites, museums, cafes, etc. What remains in this over-edited -- yet not, by the way, cheaper -- edition is basically a list of hotels and shops. The few museums, etc., mentioned are wedged into neighborhood 'sightseeing' chapters, as though the main factor in choosing a museum were locale. The end result seems quite shallow, even cynical, and a bit sad, apparently aimed at weekending yuppies on breezy consumption jaunts rather than travelers truly interested in the city. Further, this edition carries much outdated and erroneous information; many of the listed restaurants have closed down, and directions and opening hours are grossly wrong, as if the writers failed to visit the spots recommended. The only value of the new edition is providing prices in euros. If you can, get a used version of the previous edition -- the one with a lion's head fountain on the cover -- and figure out conversion rates yourself.

Editorial Review:

Time Out Vienna explores the splendid streetscapes of this elegant capital, guiding travelers through its rich past into its fluid, multicultural present. It profiles the city’s many highlights, including the Mozart anniversary celebrations, and offers detailed coverage of Vienna’s gorgeous fin-de-siècle architecture, dynamic restaurant scene, historic cafés and wine taverns, and sophisticated club culture. This essential guide has been completely updated, with new sidebars, venues, and listings added and previous entries verified for accuracy.

Pocket Map for Vienna 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I used this guide and map on a recent trip to Vienna. It was a lifesaver for getting around the Inner Stadt but not as useful outside of the central part of the city. The subway/bus/tram information was useful when I needed to get somewhere fast! It is particularly useful because it is easy to hold in your hand while walking and looking for street names. Overall I would not leave home without it.

All you need to carry in Vienna 5 out of 5 stars.

Very compact, informative little book. Handy to take on your trip. You have everything there. The street map was detailed enough with metro stops on it. Metro map folded out in the back. I read the big DK book for supplements but I only packed the pocket guide. I love it! Also saw another person on a walking tour carrying the same. I wish it had more info and a better map on the out of town trips but I guess that would negate the pocket size purpose, which it promised and delivered totally.

Editorial Review:

Every visitor to Vienna needs a good map and a good guidebook-now, for the first time, the two have been combined in a unique format at an unbeatable price. Perfectly sized to fit in a purse or back pocket, the Eyewitness Pocket Map & Guide is a fully illustrated guide to all the major sights-plus an ingenious fold-out map so you will never feel lost. The guide also includes restaurants, pubs, shops and a mini-phrasebook. It's all you need for a perfect day out and about-and for just $6.99.

Editorial Review:

Austria is the ideal country for the mountain walker. There are many hundreds of mountain huts linked by waymarked paths. Numerous summits over 2000m and even 3000m, can be reached by walkers, many by simply walking, others by easy scrambling or on easy snow. Suitably equipped parties of three can include some glaciers as described in this book. This is a revised edition of Cecil Davies' classic book. It is an introduction to 25 mountain groups with detailed descriptions of 98 walks varying from half a day to a good week. Using this guide as a starting point you could soon work out additional walks in each group. The huts of the Alpine Clubs are mostly wardened and meals are usually provided, thus it is not necessary to carry a heavy pack. The German and Austrian Alpine Clubs have over 500 mountain huts in Austria, linked by an incomparable system of hundreds of miles of footpaths. There are as many more mountain huts run by other clubs or privately. The vast majority of the walks can be undertaken by anyone competent to walk on British hills.

Editorial Review:

Fin-de-siècle Vienna remains a central event in the birth of the century's modern culture. Our understanding of what happened in those key decades in Central Europe at the turn of the century has been shaped in the last years by an historiography presided over by Carl Schorske's Fin de Siècle Vienna and the model of the relationship between politics and culture which emerged from his work and that of his followers. Recent scholarship, however, has begun to question the main paradigm of this school, i.e. the "failure of liberalism."

This volume reflects not only a whole range of the critiques but also offers alternative ways of understanding the subject, most notably though the concept of "critical modernism" and the integration of previously neglected aspects such as the role of marginality, of the market and the larger Central and European context. As a result this volume offers novel ideas on a subject that is of unending fascination and never fails to captivate the Western imagination.

Austria is a glorious country--much like Switzerland, yet less touristy and less expensive. This book gives the traveler a wealth of information with destinations that range from the popular Tyrol and the Danube to the lesser known castles of Burgenland and the glorious lakes of Carinthia. To supplement the itineraries, there are delightful places to stay along the routes, including former castles, ancient monasteries, alpine chalets and cozy farmhouses.

Michelin slipped up with this one 2 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

We have been fans of Michelin's Green Guide series for thirty years, but have become increasingly disappointed with the sloppy proof reading in the last four revised guides we have purchased. I had high hopes for this 2007 revision of the Austria guide, because our 2001 edition still had prices listed in schillings. Austria adopted the Euro in 1999, and so I assumed that this version would be fully updated. But NO! The lodging and eating out sections for Vienna still list all the prices in shillings! Who even knows what "Single room from 1 300S.", means!?! And note the lack of a comma in "1 300S", so you're not entirely sure whether the 1 is their shorthand for "single", or whether it is 1,300 shillings -- whatever THAT equals.

Then there are the places that appear to have been cut and pasted from another source. For example, there is an almost full-page text box of the Hapsburg family tree. The editors have forgotten that people buy this edition for its text in English, because the box is entitled, "Stammbaum des Herrscherhauses Hapsburg". Maybe a family tree is self explanatory, and maybe readers can figure out that the "Ludwig XVI" who is married to Marie Antoinette is known to English speakers as Louis XVI. But it is just sloppy editing.

I won't dwell on the many sentences that have missing words because I want to get to one of the most vexing features, and that is the insufficient indexing. Many readers are familiar with Michelin's 3-, 2- and 1-star system of rating principal sights. Three star sites are highly recommended, two star are recommended and one star sites are interesting. But many of the two-star sites -- and even a three-star site (Wilhering) -- do not even appear in the index or in the alphabetically-arranged main text!! How is one to decide whether to visit sites that this guide ostensibly recommends by awarding them two stars if neither the index nor the alphabetically-arranged main text can get you to a description of these places!?! Examples are Staatz, Stams, Hohe Mut, Jochdohle, Hafelekar, and Grosser Ahornboden. When the answer is to look in another guide it is time to toss this one.

As Americans living in Vienna we use a lot of travel guides. Of the nine we have for Vienna and Austria, I like "Best Drives Austria - ISBN 0749539240" for its clearly-depicted circuit drives; a book published here in Vienna and not available on Amazon - "Only in Vienna - by Duncan J.D. Smith" for its descriptions of unique sights in Vienna -- like the Turkish cannonballs embedded in Stephansdom; and the Eyewitness Travel Guides for Vienna and for Austria, for their maps, indexing (15-18 pages, 3-columns across and small font, as opposed to this Michelin guide's 7 pages, 2 columns, regular font) and recommended places to stay and eat.

Editorial Review:

The long-standing Michelin Travel Guides are an ideal travel companion for travelers who really want to connect with the world. Get to know the local way of life through detailed background information on the country, people, and culture. Quickly identify the best places to visit using Michelin's star rating system. The best sites are highlighted on the sites map or you can follow a pre-planned driving tour. With the Michelin Travel Guide to Austria, discover Vienna's famed Opera, choirs, coffeehouses, pastries, elegant architecture, Museum of Fine Arts, and Danube River. Salzburg's festivals, historic Old Town, Mozart's birthplace, shops and markets are yours to enjoy. Spas and winter sports resorts abound throughout the countryside.
