Editorial Review:

A high-speed hop from London, Paris, Amsterdam, and Cologne, the city at Europe's crossroads is as distinguished, diverse, and distinctive as any continental capital. Home to the Surrealists and the Breughels, Brussels is a living monument to art nouveau, and it enjoys a gastronomic reputation second to none — complemented by boundless bar crawls and style-conscious shopping sprees. Written by local journalists, writers, and experts, Time Out Brussels offers an informed and detailed excursion around the city and its attractions, from the Gothic and Guildhouse past of the Grand Place to Brussels' present-day role as Europe's capital, taking in its beers and boutiques, its markets and mussels, and its comics and chocolates along the way. Beyond Brussels, the guide also delves into the three main cities of Flanders: fashion-conscious Antwerp, medieval Ghent, and Bruges, Belgium's biggest tourist draw. Day trips dip each side of the French-Flemish divide, from the coast around Ostend to Liege, nestling on the Dutch and German borders. Color photos and maps throughout enhance this new edition.

Plan your trip NOW! 5 out of 5 stars.
32 of 34 people found this review helpful.

What is wonderful about this book is that not only do you get detailed maps with good directions, but there are also overview maps so that you have a sense of where you are in the countries. Everything that you need for a great cycling trip is included, transportation to and within the countries, a few accomodations (and especially where there are no accomodations), noteworthy sites, restaurants and prices. The routes are generally circle routes with side trips and also connect with each other with both total mileage for the whole circle and sectional mileages. Because this book is well organized with excellent maps - I will definately go to Benelux for a leisurely cycle tour - and probably more than once.

Editorial Review:

Cycling the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg leads cyclists through these extremely bicycle friendly countries on two wheels. The routes meander along canals, past windmills, through rolling hills and quaint villages. Included is information on weather, terrain, sightseeing, rentals plus practical information on places to stay and eat.

For the person planning to cycle for two days or two months, this book, the only English language cycling guide to these three countries, is the ideal companion.

Slim Pickin'... 3 out of 5 stars.
36 of 38 people found this review helpful.

Although Rick Steves' France, Belgium & the Netherlands 2000 was our primary guide during our 2 week vacation in France, we felt that he did not do justice to such a beautiful country like France. This book dedicates over 60 pages (out of 330) talking about Paris and leaves out beautiful places in the Alps and the Atlantic Coast. Also, this book has not lived up to the standards expected in the new millennium such as providing complimentary information regarding websites related to travel in France. I recommend using the Michelin Green Guide as a supplement, especially if you plan to drive around France. As always his recommended eateries, hotels and places to visit are always on the mark. The hand-drawn maps and helpful hints always came in handy. For example, following his advise about using alternative entry into the Louvre saved us over an hour of waiting in line. Otherwise, despite its shortcomings, this book still is my top choice, especially if you intend visiting the touristy-most-visited places in France.

Editorial Review:

In Rick Steves' France, Belgium & the Netherlands 2001, Rick weeds through the endless possibilities each country offers and gives you his personal recommendations in an honest and entertaining style. He highlights the best local sights and activities, friendly places to eat and sleep, suggested day plans and itineraries that mix the famous and not-so-famous, and clear transportation instructions that make it easy to get anywhere by car, train, or foot. Chapters include Paris, the Loire, Normandy, Dordogne, Languedoc, Provence, the French Riviera, the French Alps, Burgundy, Alsace, Brussels, Amsterdam, and Haarlem. "Rick Steve's France Belgium & the Netherlands is an excellent source for lower-priced accommodations, even in pricey Brussels."-New Orleans Times-Picayune

Sell the house and buy a barge 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Hart Massey's engaging tale of purchasing and travelling in an old barge is sure to make to yearn for the freedom of barge life. With his wife and the dog Joss he sets out to travel the canals of Holland, Belgium and France meeting adventure and misadventure along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who loves armchair travels or has thought of buying a barge.

A whale of a tale 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The leaky boat in question is a 60-year-old barge, LIONEL owned by a 60-year-old Canadian couple. The book recounts Massey's trip from Holland, Belgium and France. Told with humor and candor, it is a delightful voyage despite a less-than-perfect beginning: Lionel had sunk over the winter, and Massy retuned to leaking water pumps, pips and a hole in the hull. After eight years of cruising, the 68-year-old Masseys decide to sell LIONEL This reader shed a tear at the end of the book when their leaky iron boat chugged down the river with new owners.

The perfect way to travel 5 out of 5 stars.

Massey is an excellent and witty author and a great observer of the passing towns and countryside. The book is full of interesting historical insights, empathetic sketches of canal life, fascinating facts about food and wine and he shares lessons learned the hard way navigating an old vessel through the often shallow and sometimes confusing waterways of France, Belgium and Holland. We would love to have been his guest on some of these votages. Bravo!
