Excellent resource 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm fond of the Eyewitness Travel Guide series in general (great photos/graphics & accurate info). The Brussels guide is very compact (slim - fits in purse) and it helped me make all my decisions about on what to see on my trip. You will need a separate, more detailed map than the book provides, though it does give a good overview of the transport system.

Anything and everything you need to know about Belgium! 5 out of 5 stars.

Having spent an academic year studying and travelling in Belgium, I went through a great many different guidebooks to enhance my Belgian experience. The guidebook experience was a mixed one - some multi-area guidebooks devoted but a few pages to Belgium (Rick Steves' France, Belgium, and Luxembourg - very spotty on the Belgian information), others were more focused on the culture and history of Belgium than the intricacies of getting to a specific place (the Insight Guide to Belgium).

So, having gone through the gamut of books on Belgium, I can wholeheartedly say that this is the best one out on the market at the current time. The coverage given to tourist sites and getting around this small-but-wonderful country is outstanding...it helped me find some great, off-the-beaten-track destinations that other guidebooks might pass over. The coverage given to Luxembourg within these pages is also very well-done (not to mention helpful) -- something sorely lacking in other guidebooks.

The Insight Guide to Belgium is also recommended, but more as a cultural and historical primer. For the practicalities of everyday Belgian life, this is the only book you'll need (and its physical size is great - the least cumbersome and yet most informative guide I've ever carried around on my travels). So...what are you waiting for? Go to Belgium and take this book with you!

Editorial Review:

This guide to Belgium and Luxembourg features attractions from the art galleries of Bruges to the forests of Ardennes and the low-down on Belgian beers, including a top twenty list of brews, plus art and history essays, complete tours of World War I battlefields, and alternative perspectives on major cities and delightful small towns. For outdoors enthusiasts, the book contains plenty of advice on activities including hiking, cycling and canoeing. The authors also provide revealing background on art, history and politics.

Editorial Review:

This witty, informed guide covers both established attractions and fascinating byways of two major Belgian destinations. Ghent’s atmospheric canals, cobbled back streets, and outstanding SMAK Museum are here, along with Antwerp’s glittering, edgy nightlife and haute restaurants. Lively, candid reviews cover places to stay and play for all budgets, while the book’s pocket size and color maps make it both portable and practical.

A Useful Map Without Inforrmation Clutter 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The color scheme and typeface provide a readability level that's unusual. The bottom line is most maps are read/used in low light while most maps are apparently designed by people who have only excellent light and a complete absence of wind and rain. Today, far too many maps require a magnifying glass to read street names, particularly in the index. In addition, their focus is on the quantity of information provided not quality. This map is a user friendly pleasant exception. It is the only one I used on my last trip despite having purchased five more expensive maps of the same area. It's not too big and does not possess a mystifying fold structure requiring origami like intuition for closure. The map's colors promote readability. Why can't this be done more often?

Editorial Review:

Designed to be tough and immensely practical, as well as amazingly good value, the new Rough Guide Maps forge a new standard in city maps. Apart from travel information, and the city's sites, monuments and attractions, the Maps show every shop, restaurant, bar and hotel listed in the Rough Guide travel guide to the city in question, together with their opening times and, in many cases, phone numbers. Each map covers the main area of the city on one side and an enlarged downtown city centre map on the reverse.

Editorial Review:

Europe at the end of the century was a time of great upheaval and tension, not least in the field of culture and art, where a great many battles were being fought on the vanguard of modernity. Visionary artists and art movements were struggling to usher in the twentieth century. Art Nouveau, Symbolism, Neo-lmpressionism and Decadent Art were all an assault on traditional culture and conformity. Conventions were being exploded in all fields -- painting, architecture, sculpture and music, and the Belgium capital of Brussels rapidly emerged as the centre of these innovations. As the nineteenth century faded into darkness, Brussels became the nexus of intellectual debate and artistic practice. Among the luminaries gathering there were the "Painters of the Imagination" Fernand Khnopff, James Ensor, Henry de Groux and Felicien Rops, writer such as Maurice Maeterlinck, Emile Verhaeren and Georges Rodenbach who fuelled the creative and intellectual spirit of the city. The important fin-de-siecle art group "Les Vingt" was founded in 1884 by Thio van Rysellberghe. They organised concerts and debated the burning aesthetic issues of the day. This volume provides a detailed and fully illustrated history of this cultural milieu, the art, and the magnificent city that inspired it.

All You need to know about Belgian beers 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is The Book to buy if You ever plan on going to Belgium/have been to Belgium/like belgian beers/like beer at all etc...

The book has a section on how to get there, how to act when You are there, how to get around etc. as well as some funny remarks about the differencies between Dutch and Belgians, and Belgians and Belgians(!).

It also covers most pubs worth seeking out, although I'm eagerly awaiting the next edition with the latest additions.

The most valuable part though, is the section with the beers. Tim Webb seem to have exactly the same preferences as I do, since the beers I had tried before and liked, received high ratings, and the beers I subsequently tried after reading this book has turned out to be absolutely wonderful. That is, the beers which received high ratings. ;-)

All breweries and pubs covered in the book has full contact information enclosed. Something I have found very useful when trying to arrange visits/guided tours to different breweries.

All in all, a damn good book!

Editorial Review:

The ultimate travel guide for enthusiasts and those interested in learning more about these unique brewing cultures -- whether or not they make the trip!
